Who's Up For More Disc-Based Downloadable Collections?

So they're releasing the Journey Collector's Edition on Blu-Ray, and it will feature Thatgamecompany's incredible trio of digital titles, along with a other goodies.

Those goodies, according to recent info courtesy of OPM UK, include the original soundtracks for each game in question, exclusive mini games, documentaries, a PlayStation Plus membership, and "much more." To me, someone who believes a physical library is far more satisfying and fulfilling than a bunch of digital files on a screen, this is fantastic. I have all three games on my PS3 but I'm still getting this collection.

And I've been thinking- Wouldn't this be a great idea for other games? How's about gathering up some of the better downloadable titles available, including some extra stuff, and putting it all on a disc? Not everyone on the planet surveys the PSN or XBLA for great games (which is kind of a shame, because there are innovative, top-quality experiences available). Why not issue collections of some of the best - or most popular - downloadable titles? It might prove difficult if they're all from different designers but it can't be that hard, can it? Besides, you're essentially giving these games two launches. In addition, more of the spotlight falls on the PSN/XBLA.

Something like this simply turns our attention to the downloadable world. Even if someone doesn't spring for this Journey disc-based collection, they might remember that they missed out on one of the year's best and go download it. It can't be all that expensive to do, the consumer will probably get a good deal, and some really cool games get extra exposure and circulation. I say win-freakin'-win, baby.

Its great for those who haven't played any of the games due to whatever reason. I personally wouldn't buy the disk if I already own it unless extras are added to make it worth buying.

I'm a collector. So yes. It would be great to see them sell more on physical releases than digital. Might send a message about just how non-obsolete disks are.

As a collector, as well as a gamer, yes, yes, yes!

I'd love to delete a lot of my DL games & then be able to put them on the shelf with the rest of my disc collections, where they truly belong.

Me too! I'll be buying this since I haven't bought Journey yet. I'd like to see Limbo and others made into a collection as well.

Yeah, that sounds like a great idea. I've long complained about top titles not having digital releases and if a downloadable game can handle the extra expense of a physical release then I can readily understand people wanting those available in their preferred format. More options are rarely a bad thing.

The collection idea is great, but I'm kind of annoyed since I wouldn't have bought the downloadable copy if the game would eventually make its way to a physical medium.

That said, I can't really fault them (TGC and Sony) for the said move because the games were really meant to be downloadable titles from the beginning. I just hate buying again what I already bought, especially if they're still meant for the same console.

I think it's a good idea to bring more of these over for a few reasons. Some people just don't have fast internet to begin with (sucks to be you). Or, like BikerSaint has said, it'd be nice to clear off some less active games from the HDD and "shelve them" so to speak. I haven't purchased any of these ThatGameCompany games so maybe I'll consider this bundle disc if the price is right and my gaming time budget is open enough as well.
Anyway, I'm pretty curious about the added bonuses they'll include on the disc.
Outside of that, I sort of wonder just what other collections COULD be formed into a stand alone disc. Isn't ThatGameCompany one of the few who has actually produced 3 PS3 exclusives? I suppose Sony could do a "greatest hits" thing. I think that sort of hurts the novelty and individualized identity of each title, giving it that bargain bin sort of "value pack" feel. But anyway, cool stuff!

I'm all for it. But I wonder if these devs that have only sold digital games might be scared off by the used game market cutting into their profit. Until now, they have been payed for every single game they have sold. While releasing their games on disc will certainly introduce them to more consumers, it also opens the door to rentals and used sales that won't make them a dime. I guess its a roll of the dice.

I'm sure they lost some sales through gamesharing already. I split the cost of Journey with a friend.

If they destroy used games then disc based games should come with a digital copy.

I think it would becool to have Final Fantasy X, X-2, and XII in an HD collection.

Yes, as long as the price is right. The XBOX had a boxset of 3 games 1 being Limbo. In the UK they released Siren: Blood Curse on disc and if felt like a proper game. That's my problem with a lot of Downloadable games they just don't feel like a full game. Take Sonic 4 and it's episodes. I'll never buy that until it is complete. You never know if they'll suddenly cancel a series.

They should just release a collector's set with several games from the franchise to fill it up. I love the game. 4th Dan at the moment. A fighter that doesn't bother with a story, but gives you fun gameplay that is simple to pick up and hard to master. No kamehame haaa's or weapons, just straight up 3d fist fighting =D

Was my first time playing something from that franchise. If I only had enough money to day one buy virtua fighter 6 and soul calibur 6 (with a taki in it). Then I guess I have to get on that corner.

publishers use the excuse that its too expensive to do though.
simple solution jack the price up a little!
im sure people would not mind paying 5 bucks extra for a disk version over the DL version.
better off doing it a year or so after it releases that way it will draw much more attention to the game though.
id get a hell of allot more PSN games if they were available on disk!

I'm most definitely up for it cause that means the games gets out of the protected sphere that is PSN, and into the open market with online retailers.

And that, in turn, means good, juicy price drops for gamers like me who buy far too many games for my own good during a year.

Physical is always better in my opinion. I have Flow already and I hated it, however Journey and Flower seem interesting enough for me to buy this collection. I would love to see these kinds of collections happen far more often then they do now.
