PS3 Firmware Update 4.20: Multiple Save File Copying FTW

Time to update your PlayStation 3 again.

Details of the firmware update 4.20 have popped up online, and they include a series of fixes and new features.

This includes wireless stereo headset sidetone functionality, the ability to copy and delete multiple save files, and the chance to alter the amount of time before the system automatically shuts down. Being able to copy a group of saves at once will be a lifesaver for those who want to back up those files, and if you're looking to clean up the hard drive, deleting a bunch of saves at once is helpful, too. Obviously, this is a very practical update; it isn't exactly flashy - some were hoping for a redesigned XMB, for instance - but it's functional.

Personally, I'm good with saving any flash for the PS4. I'm not the biggest fan of a ton of updates when it comes to electronics, just because I keep thinking those in charge are often only trying to find new things to do...not 'cuz we need it, but 'cuz they don't have anything else to do. Yeah, you know, work in the corporate world. ;)

Firmware 4.20 should be available today (Tuesday).

Practical is right. That game save/game delete feature will come in handy.

Huh, never even thought of that. Seems a bit flimsy but okay. Wonder if there's anything cool happening with the PSN this week.

i dont have a problem of manually copying each file. my problem is that i only a few MB left from meeting the cloud save limit

i have that same problem. 150 mb is just not enough. i think im gonna go through and take some of them off my cloud.

I have nearly 500MB of game saves (my backup USB drive is nearly full), so I only push the locked saves to the cloud. A GB would be a more reasonable limit.

p.s. I'll still copy my saves one at a time because I manually adjust the date and time so that I can tell which save is which.

About a year ago, I bought a new harddrive for my old PS3, and to keep all the saves, I had to put them in the online storage of PS+. ONE BY ONE. Damn did I miss that feature then.

I'd happily copy saves one at a time, if they actually let me copy ANY save.
Certain games won't let you copy at all, so when the ps3 eventually kicks the bucket like mine, you'll have no way of backing them up, besides that option to back up the entire hard drive if it's still there.

another day, another useless FW update!
sigh, when will $ony actually bring a FW update that brings much needed improvements?
like the cross compatibility play with the vita.
some games work so badly, makes me wonder how they were playing KZ3 at E3 that day whenever ive tried it it lags like im playing crysis on a P3!
or the useless media functions, or the useless web browser, ect, ect.

sigh.
as the saying goes never ask a hardware company to do software!
otherwise you end up with this useless ugly muddled up mess!

Sony are one of the best when it comes to software.

Plus, I use my PS3 to browse PSXE and it works just fine, so it's not entirely useless (just...don't go on gametrailers.com. Ever) :P

Ironically, XMB has won design awards, the core OS of the PS3 is very stable, and the browser which is provided by a third party that specializes in software is the weak link. So, what's that about Sony being crap with software, and producing this "useless ugly muddled up mess"?

No need to back your saves with PS+! My son accidentally started LEGO Indiana Jones 2 again while I was out of the room and didn't choose Load. He started a new game and we lost everything. He came to me crying and told me what happened. I told him it was ok, don't worry. Downloaded last night's save and all was good. What a great service!

Of course it is until I run out of space and then this multiple save copy feature is very welcomed!

Well, now I can make a backup of my older saves, and clear down the cloud to one save per game. This multi-copy feature has been a long time coming, thank goodness it's finally here.

I love the multi-copy feature now they just need to triple the size of the cloud service. 150mb is not nearly enough, sure if you don't play that many games it is fine but I play a ton of them and I require a lot more space.

Well, thanks to the new multi-copy feature it's easier than ever to move the older files off onto a USB device and/or burn them to an optical disc for safe keeping.

I don't really store my files anywhere but the PS3 and the cloud though.


The best feature that I have found with the update is that your XMB messages scroll now. That is awesome as it saves a lot of time and hassles while trying to communicate while in a game.
