What Are This Generation's Truly Memorable Video Games?
Memory is a funny thing. We remember the pointless and the mundane, and we wonder...what the hell do I remember that for?
But for the most part, we tend to remember the amazing moments in video games. Many older gamers say their best memories are all in the past; the first time they saw Super Mario Bros., the dogs jumping through the window in Resident Evil, those crazy Atari Jaguar commercials on TV, etc. But this generation, what would you say are the truly memorable games? The ones you know have had a lasting impact and you will always remember, if only for one or two heart-stopping moments?
For me, I think the list would have to include Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, Heavy Rain, Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots, Portal 2, all the Assassin's Creed titles (with the possible exception of Revelations), Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire, Grand Theft Auto IV, Journey, Joe Danger, Echochrome, and to some extent, both Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2. But there's no guarantee that all of them will remain and endure...I wonder which ones will stick as the years go by?
Which games do you think you'll always remember from this generation?

half life 2 (if that is considered this gen), oblivion, gears 1 & 3, halo 3, Modern Warfare, ninja gaiden 2 and sigma 2, motorstorm, mgs4, uncharted 2, infamous series, kz games, gow3, gt5, mass effect series, bayonetta, assassin's creed, far cry 2, crysis 2, Ratchet CiT, resistance 3, ffVII remake, batman arkham city, skyrim ... ...
hmmm. there's probably more but that's all that comes to mind right off.
some of these could've been just for graphics or tech or whatever, not necessarily favorite games. just anything that was like WHOA that is really REALLY cool type moments happened in them. but many are favorite games, too ;)

Catherine for it's uniqueness and ultimately an ending designed to (and succeeding in) teaching me something about myself.
I'll remember a lot about Heavy Rain, especially the scene with Madison and the Doctor. I think I felt real terror there.
Dante's Inferno for a fantastically imaginative interpretation of the poem.
Two Worlds II for the fantastic looking foliage (lol don't ask).
FFXIII and XIII-2 for signalling the end of a franchise that previously could do no wrong.
So so many for so many reasons.

When I got to the finale, I felt the tension - the feeling of the end, and I knew what was coming. The story line spans across generations from 1964 all the way to present day 2012. I loved every bit of it. I felt triumphant, and I also longed for Snake. It was more saddening than satisfying. It was just so utterly amazing.

Also I don't really understand the dislike for Revelations. I think it's a better overall game than Brotherhood, the only problem it suffered was that it was in fact more of the same (albeit the missions were in fact more fun in Revelations). I liked Constantinople more than Rome too. To each his own I suppose!

Infamous (loved being a super hero or super villain, your choice!)
Red Dead Redemption (never thought I would love a western video game)
Bioshock (loved the underwater themed world)
God of War III (silky smooth gameplay)
Heavy Rain, and Skyrim enter into the conversation as well.

And then I'm only left with a few:
Bioshock: Amazing atmosphere, I felt like a kid again, entering a fantastic, yet scary fantasy.
Saints Row 2: Not many will list this one, but this is the game that cemented the friendship between me and my favourite coop buddy. I'll never forget the hours we spent in this game. Probably the happiest time I've had with my PS3, and he has become one of my best friends. We think *so* alike, something we discovered during this game. :D
Mass Effect 2: The only time I really, truly have felt that I were participating in a magnificent space opera.
Fallout 3: For the exact same reason as WorldEndsWithMe above, so I'll just quote him: "for the best atmosphere to ever virtually exist in"
Crysis 2: I feel like I am the only one in the entire world who clicked with the game so insanely as I did. I dig every single chapter of that campaign, loved every single map. Plus the multiplayer were right up there with the best MP I've ever played. It's a FPS masterpiece, damnit! ;)

Catherine - There really has never been anything like it, I played it each night just as the nightmares happen in the game. Normally I don't even like puzzle games, but even all the level designs have metaphorical meanings. The story was also more mature than most and handled the explicit content in a classy way, can't recommend this game enough.
Most memorable moment - Every boss encounter!
Final Fantasy XIII - I know this is controversial, but I still love this game. I can expect the flaws because it brought back charismatic characters to the series which was long overdue after XII cardboard cutouts. I really enjoyed the battle system too, when you notice it's more focused on being set at the right paradigm at the right time instead of moaning about the 'auto-battle' (which is not advised later on anyway...) - I found every battle very intense which I cannot say for any other FF game...
Most memorable moment - Snow & Hopes conflict in Palumpolum.
Heavy Rain - I had already played Fahrenheit, so I had an idea what to expect, but the realism attained in this game is defiantly something note worth. Also, it is a game which doesn't require you to shoot everything in sight - Something that has risen this gen far too much. It is definitely a step in bring a cinematic experience to gaming.
Most memorable moment - Trial 3...
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Sure it had it's problems in the gameplay department, I think it is because it is split into acts/different area, in previous MG's you were in one environment for a long time and it really dawned on you, while the presence of the environments feels flat (Apart from act 4 of course...). I am currently replaying it and the story is a lot better than I remember, I still feel this is the conclusion to MG and there is nothing more that can be done PW proved that.
Most Memorable Moment - The ENDING, so, so well done.
Fallout 3 - It is the first and last game of this type I will play, it was the first type of open world experience like this I had play and it really was an experience. But now sadly the post apocalyptic setting is just over used in media, this title sets the mark for me.
Most Memorable Moment - Visiting the town of the cannibals, going from one house to the other in the night with a ripper in hand - I felt like leatherface o.0
Worthy mentions - Uncharted Trilogy, Dead Space, L.A Noire, Nier

MGS4/MGO, Sacred 2, Valkyria Chronicles, Dungeon Defenders, Mirror's Edge, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, RA3: Commanders Challenge, Heavy Rain, MAG, 3D Dot Game Heroes, Demon's Souls , Two Worlds II, and last is all 3 of the Yakuza titles.
Each had something that just truely blew me away or had me hooked to the point of there is no way I could ever forget the game.

definitely skyward sword, nothing this gen has had the same full package as it had!
games these days are always jack of many trades master of none.
skyward sword was different though it was jack of all trades master of all!
no other game out there has delivered such a full package as skyward sword did!
than mass effect 2, simply because its the only game ive ever played where you get so attached to the story and characters!
the side missions were freaking brilliant!
especially the loyalty missions!
it really did make you feel like if you jumped on a ship and flew around for decades you just might find sheppard and his shenanigans!
NO game has generated such a relation between the player and the characters!
than last but not least AC2.
simply because it had such a fun combat system, the missions were allot of fun, it had a amazing in depth storyline and developing characters.
not to mention the collectables which expanded the story like the feathers and glyphs.
not many really when you consider were 7 years into this gen!
and about a year before it finishes.
just goes to show how disappointing it has been!

FFXIII-2 for the dissapointments. I have realized that it's a downgrade compared to XIII (the size of the game is about 15gb) the DLC should have been in the disc, and specially for the ending.
MGS4 a masterpiece.
Heavy Rain for it's beautiful story,
Uncharted 2 so entertaining and so much fun.
Of course Call Of Duty franchise for their influence in other developers specially some of the japanese developers.

- Souls Series
- MGS4
- Folklore
- Dead Space
- Dragons Dogma
- Darksiders
- Uncharted 2
- Journey
- Borderlands
- Xenoblade.... yea yea its a wii game
- Valkyria Chronicles
These are the games I remember the most when I think of this generation. Most of these games I either platinumed or tried too because they were so awesome.
The games felt either innovative to me, or made me feel something that no other medium can do. I'm really sad there was no PS3 Valkyria sequel :( That game just oozed charm and was really fun to play. Even though I usually hate that style of game.

The worst mainstream system to ever have launched needs such a title ;)
Not being mean, but Mario Zelda and Metroid is the beginning and end of that platform except for a rare game like Xenoblade that happened 5 years after launch

The Mass Effect Trilogy
The Gears of War Trilogy (the first one especially)
God of War 3
Portal 1, and, especially, 2
Uncharted 2 and 3
Metal Gear Solid 4
Batman: Arkham City (felt like I was running around a Tim Burton Batman movie, unbelievable atmosphere and attention to detail)
MAYBE Bioshock (though it feels clumsy when I go back to it)
A few others, like Red Dead Redemption and Left 4 Dead, may make the cut, but frankly I doubt it. L4D's graphics looked dated the day it launched, RDR had so much stuff crammed in it that it strikes me as the kind of game that will look sloppy in retrospect.
Portables had some great ones too:
Both PSP GOW games were awesome
Super Mario 3D Land was a revelation
All the 2D Castlevania games for DS were just fantastic
I'm sure there are others but those come immediately to mind. Really have loved this generation, no question about it.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the likes of Uncharted, inFamous, Burnout Paradise, Heavy Rain, Catherine and tons of others, and I'll remember them, but none of them shared the same charm of those top four.
