Final Fantasy XIII-2: Previously Unknown Tidbits Revealed

It's always interesting to see what developers initially had planned for a certain game, especially one as big as Final Fantasy XIII-2.

Some fans have been reading up on the stuff that didn't make it into Square Enix's latest RPG production, thanks to the Ultimania Omega book that has offered plenty in the way of behind-the-scenes details.

Firstly, the game was supposed to be a direct sequel to FFXIII, taking place 900 years after the events in Lightning's first adventure. It was during the creation of the back story for this plot that the developers decided to implement time travel. There's also some information on the complex relationships between Caius and Yeul, and why nothing romantic happened between Serah and Noel. The latter should be obvious, though; they both had other love interests (Snow and Yeul respectively).

Then there's the canceled DLC: Originally, Snow was going to have a motorcycle mini-game, where he'd ride through the Archylte Steppe bashing monsters; he'd be able to spin, drift, and jump, and he'd even have a "water spell." Another piece of extra content that didn't make the cut was one for Hope. It would've been "an adventure type game using the Live Trigger system in Augusta Tower." The goal there would've been to keep Alyssa from killing Hope.

It seems there was a lot of content and ideas that didn't make it into FFXIII-2...maybe that's why they'll eventually give us FFXIII-3...?

After watching the cutscenes for FF13 on youtube I really don't get why so many people said FF13 had such a great story. I thought it was good, but compared to other FF titles it felt a couple pegs below.

That isn't to say that people who did are wrong, it was just to much like a soap opera for me. However I did start liking it towards the end, but for 3/4ths of the game I wanted to punch lightning through a lions digestive tract. I thought the world was cool and definitely liked some of the reveals at the end.

I was wondering Ben if you want to see a FF13-3? Do you think its warranted. Do you hope its more like FF13 or 13-2, combat wise. I think its inevitable judging from what I have heard 13-2s ending was but still. They left us hanging without a proper KH2 sequel so maybe they will do that here.

I completely agree with your comment 100%

I don't know how many times when on the topic of FF XIII, people would mention how "awesome" Lightning is, or how much better the story is in comparison to XIII-2.

I don't get it. Lightning's an arrogant asshole throughout most of it, and while XIII-2's story was quite convoluted (which is to be expected when you include time-travel), at least it didn't bore me to tears like XIII's story did.

Of course, all this is just my opinion, and one which not a lot of people seem to agree with.....but I just couldn't hold it in any longer >.<"

I rolled my eyes while Lightning explained why she changed her name. Half the time I asked myself "who thinks and acts like that?"
I actually tend to have this problem with a lot with anime eastern story design. There's just these collectivist tendencies and social norms, attitudes and behavior that just don't translate for me. It's one big reason I like stories written or carefully edited by westerners, I usually can identify a lot more with the characters that way. Mass Effect, for one, feels much more seamless to me because of that.

I think one Jrpg that could really nail the culture gap was during Lost Odyssey's visions from the past stories. Many of them were culturally very Japanese, like the story with the people left to die in the sealed cave, but the delivery of the message was impeccably translated and definitely made the culture jump for me. The emotions were identified.

Man when lightning said why she changed her name I literally groaned so loud. Lightning is my least favourite FF character ever and while I don't think it is wrong that people really like her, I haven't the foggiest idea what is appealing about her.

Me and my friend when we were done watching the cutscenes were both greatly we didn't actually have to play the game.

Temjin, yeah I agree 100% I have a hard time getting into anime because most of the stuff coming out now is just super impossible for me to relate to. The japanese handle love tension really terribly in most cases. In fact I haven't been impressed with a japanese story for a long time, except for Binary Domain, and even that had hints of things I couldn't relate too.

I just hope versus comes out soon and proves that Square still has a slight clue how to make games.

Sometimes games can surprise me. I thought Shione was one of the rare exceptions in Jrpg stories. Initially I was way turned off by the typical overly flamboyant take charge stereotypical personality she portrayed. But the story line did well to show a lot of quiet moments with her, flashbacks and standing and thinking etc., it made her less asymmetric because of it I thought. Xenosaga was pretty cool like that.

No, you're 100% correct. FFXIII's story was not up to FF par. I also don't get why some people liked it... I think it might be because people don't fully know what they're comparing it to and just comment on the moment.

It wasn't bad at it's core, I guess, but the dialogue was pitiful.

I actually really enjoyed Xenosaga. However Shion in episode one I wanted to punch through a wall dialogue wise. Dialogue wise for 2 and 3 I didn't mind but something about her voice or voice actor always irked me a bit. I loved Yeshua and Jin though. I still don't know what actually happened at the ending of 3. It felt kind of like a Star Ocean 3 ending only more vague? It was a long time ago maybe I was just younger and had ADHD and missed something >.<

Yeah underdog, the plot and ideas were cool although a little convoluted in FF13. I did dig the world they created. However dialogue was like watching the worst japanese anime soap opera. I couldn't for the life of me understand why Hope was so pissed at Snow for like a third of the game. I'm glad he got over that relatively quick because he actually became somewhat likable. Also anyone else think that vanilles voice actor just had orgasms half of the time? Seriously there were scenes where if you closed your eyes well......nevermind I'll just leave it at that.

it's just a nickname she made for herself, here's a link (http://dilly-shilly.blogspot.com/2009/10/episode-zero-chapter-three.html). Thier father died early and when she was fifteen their mother got sick and died it's her responsabilities to protect Serah so she vow to grow up quickly so she can do it for Serah's future and so when Serah has turned to crystal, the only family she had left, maybe that's why she was angry and mad at the beginning of XIII, Bruce Wayne created his alter ego Batman because of the death of his parents. It's western. Every Final Fantasy is different to each other and I respect Square for doing that. XIII f*ck the norm about doing a rpg and I appreciate that. It does'nt have to be always about a world map, turn based battle system or mini games. Square already done that in previous titles. By the way i am also dissapointed at XIII-2, and i don't want a FFXIII-3 game, just conclude the story in a DVD like Advent Children. Just make FFXV.

Batman created an entity to protect his identity and to create fear in his enemies based on the fears of his own. If you recall in batman begins "its time my enemies shared my dread" In response to Alfreds "why bats master wayne?"

Lightning just changed her name, same clothes no super hero hidden identity. In fact people still called her by her old name if in those flash backs if I'm not mistaken? True sarah was turned to crystal but even in the flashbacks lightning is a moody B!%@$

Nothing they did in FF13 was better than what they did on the past. It felt like they went backwards. Most old time FF fans felt this and even people who just started playing during the PSX or PS2 era.

Yes square has done world maps but why would they get rid of something they do so well? FF13 was a corridor up until the end when it opened up. How is that evolving the series in any way?

Not to mention the dialogue between characters was painful.

I'm glad each final fantasy is different than the last one in combat etc. In fact I loved ff12 and most ff fans hated it. But I felt ff13 had nothing going for it. Combat that could play itself and a story that was pretty dull up until the last quarter.

Obviously these are my opinions, I don't think people aren't allowed to like FF13 I just don't have a clue what the appeal to it is.

Lightning already hated Snow in the beginning when they first met. Just read the prologue novel of XIII in the link of my previous comment. As for Batman, it's just my reply to Temjin's about anime eastern story design and who think's and act like that comment.

Yes, as I have said many times before I want Final Fantasy XIII to be concluded with XIII-3 - not DLC. Had they left it at XIII I would have been satisfied, but as XIII-2 had no conclusion I want more.

Some of the DLC sounds interesting, The Snow mini-game reminds me of the Shinra highway sequence from FFVIII. the content screams mini-games and when I thinking of that term I think of content that should be included in the initial release... Nope DLC won't be winning me over any time soon.

Also, I cannot express how much I want these Ultimania books to be released internationally & translated! They're so insightful and a book for each numeral, I know I would adore it if I could read it.

An actual sequel would have been appreciated instead of the acid trip they wound up with.

You can tell they sliced the game up, when I walked into the casino and found out that I couldn't even play cards until they made the DLC for it I was not pleased.

Alyssa was the most interesting character in the game, which as an NPC just shouldn't happen.

K, which is it? The article from the link said it wasn't suppose to be a direct a sequel, but this one is saying it WAS suppose to be?

"Wasn't" supposed to be a direct sequel is the correct wording. Ben must have mistyped.

Technically the events in XIII-2 DO take place right after the events of XIII and it has some old faces but the story has nothing to do with XIII. It comes way out of left field and doesn't continue any plot points laid out in XIII so I don't consider it an actual sequel.

When you read the source article you can just tell that SE has completely lost their minds where Final Fantasy is concerned.

I've known that since they apparently refuse to release versus. Seriously the game looks impressive and they are scared to release it? Either Nomura is a perfectionist or they have kept him locked in squares basement and he has been done for years but they just kind of forgot about him.

They chain him to the desk working on other products and say "Hey dummy, we will release your game after you make another one of ours!"

But seriously, the thought process revealed in this particular leak is even more telling than their actions. It's so schizophrenic even they have no clue what they are trying to get across in the warped world of Fabula Nova Crystalis. I don't mean the fact that ideas get cut, I mean the weirdness behind the plot directions they thought of.

Goes to show how the basics are so important: saving a planet, falling in love, fighting bad guys... towns and dungeons...

Indeed. I thought with the change from agito to zero they dumped the whole fabula nova crystalis thing. Maybe they just want to link versus 13 with 13?

I was really excited to see how they linked the universe together between the different games. Maybe 13-2s crazy acid was the only method they could think of to do so? That or they are just bat sh!@ crazy and are at war with themselves.

Seriously I imagine SE headquarters to be nice looking from the outside. But inside there are two rival factions donning samurai armour, warring with each other. Arrows flying, limbs being severed, horses galloping it honestly must be something like that over there.

I agree I don't know how they can't just "get" that people want 1 world maps, 2, interesting story even if its just saving the world, 3 good turn based combat like ff10 or dq8, and 4 things to do outside of combat like mini games, monster collecting, casinos etc.

DQ8 had all of those things :( what a gem that was.

I tried to play both ff13 and 13-2 and i had intestinal pain after both. The stories made me reflect on how grateful i am that every FF beneath 12 had such riveting stories. I don't think i can honestly take a FF game serious ever again. I mean versus is probably my last FF game, ever. As much love as i have for the FF's 13 just took my trust and crapped on it. They ruined the game i went to for story and awesome characters. Anyway thats my opinion. Anymore 13's will make me shake my head in shame.
