Final Fantasy XIII-2: Previously Unknown Tidbits Revealed
It's always interesting to see what developers initially had planned for a certain game, especially one as big as Final Fantasy XIII-2.
Some fans have been reading up on the stuff that didn't make it into Square Enix's latest RPG production, thanks to the Ultimania Omega book that has offered plenty in the way of behind-the-scenes details.
Firstly, the game was supposed to be a direct sequel to FFXIII, taking place 900 years after the events in Lightning's first adventure. It was during the creation of the back story for this plot that the developers decided to implement time travel. There's also some information on the complex relationships between Caius and Yeul, and why nothing romantic happened between Serah and Noel. The latter should be obvious, though; they both had other love interests (Snow and Yeul respectively).
Then there's the canceled DLC: Originally, Snow was going to have a motorcycle mini-game, where he'd ride through the Archylte Steppe bashing monsters; he'd be able to spin, drift, and jump, and he'd even have a "water spell." Another piece of extra content that didn't make the cut was one for Hope. It would've been "an adventure type game using the Live Trigger system in Augusta Tower." The goal there would've been to keep Alyssa from killing Hope.
It seems there was a lot of content and ideas that didn't make it into FFXIII-2...maybe that's why they'll eventually give us FFXIII-3...?

I don't know how many times when on the topic of FF XIII, people would mention how "awesome" Lightning is, or how much better the story is in comparison to XIII-2.
I don't get it. Lightning's an arrogant asshole throughout most of it, and while XIII-2's story was quite convoluted (which is to be expected when you include time-travel), at least it didn't bore me to tears like XIII's story did.
Of course, all this is just my opinion, and one which not a lot of people seem to agree with.....but I just couldn't hold it in any longer >.<"

I actually tend to have this problem with a lot with anime eastern story design. There's just these collectivist tendencies and social norms, attitudes and behavior that just don't translate for me. It's one big reason I like stories written or carefully edited by westerners, I usually can identify a lot more with the characters that way. Mass Effect, for one, feels much more seamless to me because of that.

Me and my friend when we were done watching the cutscenes were both greatly we didn't actually have to play the game.
Temjin, yeah I agree 100% I have a hard time getting into anime because most of the stuff coming out now is just super impossible for me to relate to. The japanese handle love tension really terribly in most cases. In fact I haven't been impressed with a japanese story for a long time, except for Binary Domain, and even that had hints of things I couldn't relate too.
I just hope versus comes out soon and proves that Square still has a slight clue how to make games.

Yeah underdog, the plot and ideas were cool although a little convoluted in FF13. I did dig the world they created. However dialogue was like watching the worst japanese anime soap opera. I couldn't for the life of me understand why Hope was so pissed at Snow for like a third of the game. I'm glad he got over that relatively quick because he actually became somewhat likable. Also anyone else think that vanilles voice actor just had orgasms half of the time? Seriously there were scenes where if you closed your eyes well......nevermind I'll just leave it at that.

Lightning just changed her name, same clothes no super hero hidden identity. In fact people still called her by her old name if in those flash backs if I'm not mistaken? True sarah was turned to crystal but even in the flashbacks lightning is a moody B!%@$
Nothing they did in FF13 was better than what they did on the past. It felt like they went backwards. Most old time FF fans felt this and even people who just started playing during the PSX or PS2 era.
Yes square has done world maps but why would they get rid of something they do so well? FF13 was a corridor up until the end when it opened up. How is that evolving the series in any way?
Not to mention the dialogue between characters was painful.
I'm glad each final fantasy is different than the last one in combat etc. In fact I loved ff12 and most ff fans hated it. But I felt ff13 had nothing going for it. Combat that could play itself and a story that was pretty dull up until the last quarter.
Obviously these are my opinions, I don't think people aren't allowed to like FF13 I just don't have a clue what the appeal to it is.

Some of the DLC sounds interesting, The Snow mini-game reminds me of the Shinra highway sequence from FFVIII. the content screams mini-games and when I thinking of that term I think of content that should be included in the initial release... Nope DLC won't be winning me over any time soon.
Also, I cannot express how much I want these Ultimania books to be released internationally & translated! They're so insightful and a book for each numeral, I know I would adore it if I could read it.

You can tell they sliced the game up, when I walked into the casino and found out that I couldn't even play cards until they made the DLC for it I was not pleased.
Alyssa was the most interesting character in the game, which as an NPC just shouldn't happen.

Technically the events in XIII-2 DO take place right after the events of XIII and it has some old faces but the story has nothing to do with XIII. It comes way out of left field and doesn't continue any plot points laid out in XIII so I don't consider it an actual sequel.

But seriously, the thought process revealed in this particular leak is even more telling than their actions. It's so schizophrenic even they have no clue what they are trying to get across in the warped world of Fabula Nova Crystalis. I don't mean the fact that ideas get cut, I mean the weirdness behind the plot directions they thought of.
Goes to show how the basics are so important: saving a planet, falling in love, fighting bad guys... towns and dungeons...

I was really excited to see how they linked the universe together between the different games. Maybe 13-2s crazy acid was the only method they could think of to do so? That or they are just bat sh!@ crazy and are at war with themselves.
Seriously I imagine SE headquarters to be nice looking from the outside. But inside there are two rival factions donning samurai armour, warring with each other. Arrows flying, limbs being severed, horses galloping it honestly must be something like that over there.
I agree I don't know how they can't just "get" that people want 1 world maps, 2, interesting story even if its just saving the world, 3 good turn based combat like ff10 or dq8, and 4 things to do outside of combat like mini games, monster collecting, casinos etc.
DQ8 had all of those things :( what a gem that was.

That isn't to say that people who did are wrong, it was just to much like a soap opera for me. However I did start liking it towards the end, but for 3/4ths of the game I wanted to punch lightning through a lions digestive tract. I thought the world was cool and definitely liked some of the reveals at the end.
I was wondering Ben if you want to see a FF13-3? Do you think its warranted. Do you hope its more like FF13 or 13-2, combat wise. I think its inevitable judging from what I have heard 13-2s ending was but still. They left us hanging without a proper KH2 sequel so maybe they will do that here.
