Aliens Writer: The Heart Of The Story Is A Female Character

When gamers learned there wouldn't be a playable female character in Aliens: Colonial Marines, the backlash was...well, quite significant to say the least.

But Gearbox writer Mikey Neumann has tried to clarify things for those who remain miffed. In a series of Tweets conversing with "HeatherAnneCampbell," Neumann was somewhat vague but did say that producer Brian Burleson may have "misspoken" and that the team hasn't announced everything they're doing just yet. Furthermore, don't think there are no women in the game; that was a common - and obviously erroneous - assumption after the news broke. Wrote Neumann:

"Speaking from a story perspective, the heart of the story in the game is a character named Bella. A female, and the best I've ever written."

There's no doubt that the "Alien" franchise has always featured strong female roles and it appears the developers aren't ignoring that. Isn't it crazy how things can kinda get blown out of proportion every now and then? Or rather...really often?

This game is going to rain 7.5s. Can we please stop making so many FPS and actually make compelling games with a compelling format!?

I really hope not, I have been waiting for this game for years, Aliens featured one of the most fun & interesting military groups I have ever seen in a film. I am hoping this game will keep that spirit in the new set of characters.

But I really want this to be a good game, Alien VS Predator had so much potential, but the controls and sluggish animation let it down - Controlling the Xenomorph & having to press a button to go on each new corner of a wall became so tedious and ruined that gameplay section.

"Aliens featured one of the most fun & interesting military groups I have ever seen in a film"

...and one of the most unrealistic. Starship Troopers' military forces are more believable and it's a satire!

Aliens is 80s shlop and I have little doubt this latest game based on the movie will be the typical 90% action/set pieces.

Maybe so, but they we're still one of the most interesting, if you ask me they caught the solders attitude spot on.

It's one of the only films I can think of where I do actually care for the whole cast of soldiers. Usually they're very bland and all the same but each character had a great sense of personality - one example, Drake and Vasquez's friendship, they'd play rough, but it was so strong. I really like the cast and thought they all did a terrific job in making what could just be a bog standard unit, memorable.

Sounds like they wanted to save face and instead of agreeing that the petition changed their minds they pretended their last statement wasn't accurate.

No way there is a marine named Bella. It's going to be some damsel in distress. Aliens the movie was loaded with tough, awesome female characters (including two marines.) I'm totally interested in this game, but there's really no excuse if there isn't a single playable female marine in it.

Almost like how every time you post you blow everything out of proportion...

But in any case, This will not be a survival horror game. It will hopefully have tense & suspenseful moments but I imagine it will be more focused on delivering the action expectations a shooter must rise to.

Well it doesn't have to *rise to* any action level to be a shooter. In Alien, Marines are weak compared to the Aliens. They are the *Hunted* ones. If the roles were to be reversed it would not be an Alien game anymore. So I bet and I hope they will aim at that intense (thriller/horror/survival/with some action of course) perspective. It has to make me feel like those vulnerable little humans in the movies lol. I want to try to outsmart the hunter and survive.
