Arkane Studios: The Successful Titles Are Usually Sequels
A new IP is always risky in the video game industry.
Although it's one of the most anticipated titles of the year, and it sports a look that Elder Scrolls fans might really love, Dishonored is one of those risky projects. Why? It isn't part of an established franchise.
And developer Arkane Studios knows this all too well. In speaking at the Develop Conference 2012, visual design director Viktor Antonov accepts the challenge: "Rarely in life in as a developer do you get to start a brand new IP," he said. "Mostly everything successful is a sequel nowadays."
As for the visuals, Arkane created the city of Dunwall with the Great Plague of 1665 in mind, essentially basing the environment on the city of London in that time period. If you're a little behind and you want to see more of Dishonored, there's plenty of gameplay available, including this stealth footage that left us drooling. But there's no doubt that in a land where recognizable names rule, the new IP is a tough sell.

It's the only thing that can keep the industry healthy and move it foward.
btw - off topic - but are you in an odd mood today Ben?(or last night when you updated the site) Cause I'm trying to draw the lines between 5 games we don't want our significant others seeing, the all girl gamer group (and what the comment section became - particularly in light of the above article), and a kama sutra videogame.

There are of course a few new IPs this gen that are great to be there for on day 1 of a new entry like Bioshock: I.
I'm betting on Dishonored day 1, just looks too unique to miss.

its a real shame really that most new IPs dont sell very well.
certainly are exceptions LA Noire for instance but thats a rare exception of the rule.
hopefully this will fall in the same boat as LA Noire though.
there actually very similar!
both are unique titles set in the past, both are from unheard of developers, and both are from well known famous publishers.
thats exactly why LA Noire sold so well, if it was released by THQ or $ony like originally planned it would not of sold 1/4 as well!
hopefully the same will happen with this, bugthesda games always sell quite well so i really hope this follows suit!
it looks so unique and different, i really hope it sells really well so we can set up a new franchise!

while this is still "kill-or-be-killed" it offers some sort of innovation. and that should be encouraged.
i will probably buy this one!
