Who Wants To See NetherRealm Tackle A Different Genre?
Well, it probably gets boring working within the same genre, right? And if you're successful, doesn't that earn you the right to branch out?
It appears that the fighting veterans at NetherRealm Studios might want to do just that. In a recent Q&A at the PlayStation Blog, NetherRealm boss and co-creator of Mortal Kombat Ed Boon says the team's next game could be something very different. However, their current project - Injustice: Gods Among Us - needs to do well so they can get that opportunity. Said Boon:
"We feel like [Injustice: Gods Among Us] is kind of our first step towards that. If it does well, we would like to see our next step be a non-fighting game, maybe something unique in its own right. This is our first step in that direction."
He added that he also wants to work on other new IPs in various genres, and even for different formats as well. As of right now, they're beefing up the staff so they'll be ready for the next generation of hardware. Once again, though, we're faced with a common question: Should a developer who has proven itself so capable in one genre just stick to that genre? Is it simply too risky to try something different? Or should they try to expand creatively? Safety versus risk...

I think they could do well doing an action adventure, like God of War or something. I think they should branch out slowly. They shouldn't for example try making an RTS or something as there first attempt at another genre.
And no shooters, we already have more than enough of those. Unless they could really do something fancy and creative which I don't want to say is impossible, but is incredibly unlikely.

they would be the perfect match for a game like batman.
a open ish world 3D fighting game!
exactly why i wish they would go back to that fire and ice game, i mean shaolin monks was such a awesome game!
and that was the same style but with sub zero and scorpion, 2 of the franchises best characters!
i wish they would expand their studio.
we need more MK games, but id love to see them create a new style of game too so a larger split studio would be perfect!
one team work on a new MK game, preferably fire and ice, and the other team create a open world fighting game similar to batman arkham city!
or even splatterhouse!
they would be the perfect team to do a new splatterhouse!!!!!

As much as I love the MK universe, includng Shaolin Monks, it must be driving the dev team a wee bit insane by now after a dozen games.
Creative souls need to switch gears every once in a while to refresh.
That being said it's a pity a new IP is such a gamble these days.
