Square Enix Tech Director On FFVII: "I'd Like A Remake"

See, Square Enix? Even your own bosses want a remake.

The PC version of Final Fantasy VII will soon be re-released with some visual retouching, achievements, cloud saves, and a little cheating mechanic that lets the player artificially boost the stats of the characters.

So many have wondered if this might hint at a long-awaited remake. Square Enix is usually vague on the issue, but when FFDream interviewed Julien Merceron, S-E's Worldwide Technology Director, he basically said he'd like to do one. He first admitted to not being one of the decision-makers that would get such a project going, but he added that as "a player and a fan," there's no doubt he'd enjoy seeing a FFVII remake. Here's his response; it's in French but a member of the site was nice enough to translate for us:

"It’s a game that is very precious (important in my heart) to me also, surely you will find on the internet some interviews that I have made in the past that confirmed that. For me, Final Fantasy VII, it was one of the most beautiful experiences. But there are other Final Fantasy [titles] released before that were also superb and then still others after.

Of course, for me, as a player I would. There are people in the company who decide what they do with the brands and what they do and choose with the Final Fantasy franchise, what is right and what isn’t good. I just try to decide on the level of technology and I [leave them to their decisions] but as a player as a fan, yes of course, I'd like a remake."

If you're wondering, Merceron is the guy who went on the record last year, talking about what we can expect in the next generation. He was most recently in the news for saying this generation of hardware has lasted way too long. You may notice he didn't say anything about the technical limitations and difficulties of doing a FFVII remake, and he's a a tech director, so...maybe that's encouraging?

Would someone just make this game happen. S-E needs to realize this stuff will NEVER end unless they just make the remake. It's their fault to begin with. Showing off that FFVII tech demo and all during PS3's unveil was just too much for fans to handle. It's like Tekken and DOA with bikinis, but worse. Much worse =p

The thing is they have done Tech demos before, everyone seems to forget that they rendered the ballroom dance sequence from Final Fantasy VIII in PS2 hardware back in the day and before the PS1 they made a tech demo of FFVI characters in 3D graphics.

FFVII has had a prequel, Sequel, a movie and people still want more. I personal want one more games as DoC left the ending open. Heck they're now even re-releasing it on PC to be compatible with HD monitors - Hasn't VII had enough already?

The second that Tech release came out, you knew it would never die.

Why are you surprised?

As for me, just for releasing that tech demo, I sure as heck hope it never dies.

More... we need more FFVII. God of War knows we've had shite for FF this past half decade.

FFVII won't have had enough until it's remade on current hardware.

Sure, they've had tech demos before. But they were all done relatively recently from their original releases!

FFVII's tech demo came nearly a full decade later. Plus, they continue to tease with stuff on their twitter page, asking fans if they'd really like a remake. Staff like this guy make comments. And while some people say it'll never happen, others say they aren't opposed to the idea, but they have other priorities. Lately, there has been less absolutely no answers, and more, just not right now sort of answers.

It's not the same at all.

"I personal want one more games as DoC left the ending open."

"Hasn't VII had enough already?"

That's a little ironic, isn't it? You say you Final Fantasy VII had enough yet hope Square produces another sequel in that universe?

DrRockso87 I want another game out of principle, personally I wish DoC never happened - I even like the gameplay, but the story is just diabolical. I'd be happy with Crisis Core, FFVII & Advent Children alone.

yep, check this vid out. This one is longer than the one I remember. But back then my friends loved Nintendo and hated the thought of Sony getting an FF game. THey held this tech demo close to their heart, feeling safe that it would eventually happen for N64.

haha, wow Temjin I've never seen that. Looks like a messed up mix of FF and Castlevania 64. They should have just made it a spinoff FF.

Yup that's the one, as I said there is also an FFVIII one too, so it's nothing new, fans can't demand a remake over a 'technical demonstration'.

Again, and aside from the other tech demos not really making anyone feel like a remake would be a good idea, I don't recall anything from SE along the same lines as a twitter explosion or countless comments from SE staff....

But eh.... these sort of facts, along with others, have no place on the internet, I suppose. Not when subjective -preferences- rule the day...

They should not have let him say this gen has lasted too long, and I'm sure SE will be pissed that he said this. It just highlights how bad things have gotten for the company since the departure from sense and reason for the FF franchise and others.

What I can't understand is why they choose the Final Fantasy franchise to commit such a departure from the original working formula.

Why didn't they first test it on one of their other franchises and base future decision on fan reaction.

Guess arrogance just took over.

I praise him for showing interest in a Final Fantasy VII remake but criticize him for his words that this generation "lasted too long" while working for a company that can barely produce console RPGs anymore.

Still, I'm glad he's open to the idea.

Just no. Enough already Square. You guys are incapable of producing anything that resembles the Final Fantasy games of yesteryear. You'll just muck up any remake with your crap voice actors and your need for "accessibility" to please the twitch gamers. Best to just FFVII it alone.

There's so much disharmony coming from SE's direction... Imagine if they had the same vision they'd always had... bosses from different departments should all share the same vision in a healthy company.

Anyone read "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team"? Excellent read.

Why?

If Big bosses from within Square Enix keep talking about it, guess what? ... Gaming sites are going to cover it.

You think IGN -doesn't- post FFVII news items a few times a year? Think again.

If you don't like the topic of a certain article, don't flippin' read it. I don't read every single article. (I read most, just not all)

I mean... of course it's going to get attention... SE publicly asks if people want an FFVII remake on their twitter account... different execs and devs from within SE bring it up from time to time.... lately, they haven't said they won't ever do it, (although they said they have other priorities right now)... and when they made that tech demo, it came about a decade after the original release.

I'm not sure what you expected.......

EDIT: By the way, most gaming sites have been making articles about FFVII this year with more regularity... something to think about. (And not just this site either. IGN had 3-4 last month alone on FFVII material)

Yeah right. The idea of kickstarter as I understood it was, to show that fans are willing to chip in for the sake of a game that is interesting and intriguing to them.

Final Fantasy title? Might as well make a new game in a casino and call it FF. See how many people gather at the tables xDDD

Your making no sense... a FF7 remake is interesting and intriguing to a lot of people. SE feels like it is a waste of their time to do it, but instead they have to move forward. If a successful kickstarter gives them a bang for their buck then they will be more willing to do it.

The same thing could be said about people wanting a TLOD sequel, prequel, remake or w/e.

Ok, lets talk about square and sony making a game that was rumored to be "in the works" no released date mind you early in the spring 2007?

What? no talk about epic bringing gears to the ps3? Even in that article it said "it's never gonna happen". Why stop there? Hey I want blue dragon on the ps3. Let me guess, Ben doesn't like the game much so he doesn't bring it up.

By the way ff7 wasn't all that. Geez, the load times had more lag than Bath and Body Works has oils and lotions. Random battles going from point a to point b. Read the review of the former xplay on g4 host says about it.

Again, let's talk about a game that's in the "what if" phase that may take 4 to 5 years to make. How many "what if this game gets a sequel or remade" topics are you gonna make?

IGN? The company who dissed the ps vita on the cost of the handheld and their high cost of the gigabyte memory cards. And they had the nerve to compare the vita to the 360.

I sort of wish you were making a point within the context of the discussion. FFVII stands apart from all those other titles simply due to the fact that there are -real- news releases that constantly revive the hope for a remake.

But ah, alas and alack... you and ultimadream hates da factz.

No Ultimadream there isn't enought. We want a remake since 2001 ! Square Enix answer us in 2005 with the tech demo PS3, and reanswer us in 2007 with the FF VII Crisis Core ending.

No we all haven't wanted a remake since 2001. Some of us are quite happy with the original. There's no need for a remake. If the game was horrible then yeah THEN I could see a remake being done. But it was fine for it's time, so one isn't warranted.

Hey, here's a topic, I like mario, gears, and other exclusive games that aren't on the ps3, but are they coming?

ff7 was released in 2007, 2007. And you think it's gonna get released? My mistake, sony and square ARE making this game like grand turismo. There just keep pushing back the release date, am i right?

This topic isn't about a game that's not going to get released but pretending that it was? Cause that would be corny, lame, foolish. By the way, are you guys on team edward or team jacob?

Losers. To each there own I guess.

Anyways, I'm probably just gonna stop replying to you until you or ultimadream can legitimately counter the points I made.

Simply skipping them and clinging to your own POV is extremely escapist. And a bit depressing.

But at least I can, yet again, go with the knowledge that I am right....

Speaking of which... maybe I should start declaring truths without complete knowledge... mix things up... be wrong once in a while. Easy ownage is getting boring...
