Date A Gamer Begets Shag A Gamer...And We Cringe

Oh crap.

I'll go with how it started. The UK's Date A Gamer website didn't necessarily annoy me; in fact, it seemed like a good way to get like-minded people together. Really, how different is it when compared to Christian Mingle or something like that?

But now, as reported by Eurogamer, the original idea has transformed into something vastly more objectionable. Yep, it's a new off-shoot site called Shag A Gamer, which presents itself as the "UK's #1 Adult Site For Gamers And Geeks." It claims to "fill the gap left for horny geeks who aren't necessarily looking for dating or a long-term relationship, but who are interested in scouting for sex online and meeting up for no-strings nookie."

Date A Gamer boss Tom Thurlow said members of the Date A Gamer site really weren't using it for creating new relationships; they were basically just trolling for sex. So this got him thinking and bam, the new "evolved" site. Said Thurlow:

"...perhaps by providing a platform where geeks and gamers over the age of 18 could arrange to meet up and get it on, we could help people who may feel uneasy in social situations, find someone and get some action.

People were using the Date a Gamer site to meet up for sex anyway, but this way they have a space where they can do this more openly in an arena they are comfortable in, in other words, online."

He admitted that the idea "will raise more than a few eyebrows" but he's hoping adults will act like adults and the site will "even become self-regulating." Yeah, well, we're not big fans of this guy signing people up without them even knowing (he admitted to using a site called Global Personals), and one thing more-

Gamers have long since suffered from various stereotypes that essentially accuse those who play video games of being immature, of being incapable of sustaining normal, mature, adult relationships. Furthermore, we're accused of being affected by the violence and over-sexualized content we find in games. So now we're just giving in to that and giving the mainstreamers more ammunition? Yay.

Well, if you'd like to join, go right ahead. Membership has swelled to 260,000 members since Shag A Gamer opened for business. How grand.
