Sony May Announce A PS3 Price Cut Along With The New Model
The rumors concerning a new PlayStation 3 model have been rampant lately, the most recent set arriving with supposedly leaked pics that show a ridged machine. Kinda weird.
This is hot on the heels of various trademark and patent evidence that supports the idea of a new PS3 model, which may be revealed at GDC next month. They may also unveil three separate consoles with different hard drive sizes (16GB, 250GB, and 500GB respectively). But wouldn't it also make sense to announce a price drop for the current PS3 model at the same time? It may actually be inevitable at this point; either that, or the new 250GB PS3 will retail for $249, the same cost as the standard 160GB model now. That may not be a "price cut," per se, but it still means we're getting more for our buck.
Plus, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go into the holidays with some slightly cheaper hardware. Right now, it seems unlikely that they'll drop the price of the PlayStation Vita (unless sales really tank between now and the fourth quarter). And with more high-profile PS3 exclusives on the horizon (PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, God of War: Ascension, Beyond: Two Souls, The Last Of Us) and Sony's claims that the system has a long way to go, a price cut wouldn't be too shocking.
Oh, and one of these days, Sony is going to toss in a HDMI cable because not including one remains totally absurd.

Plus, you can even get them in 7 to 8 different colors, & in lengths from 1.5 feet, all the way in-between up to 50 feet.
(I've used their cables up to 35 & 50 feet myself just so I could string my consoles around the living room & I will certainly swear by them).

Also, I think you have to be careful if you have a 3D TV you need cables with a much higher bandwidth than those 2$ cables you are talking about.

Anyhow, wish I knew about this hair dryer trick. I'd love to have had my NGS2 save back.

That worked for me, but the unit still got really hot and I figured there was no sense waiting for it to die again, bought a Slim, backed up my saves and transferred the hard drive.

not to mention DLC, patches and PSN games or demos.
they would be better off offering one with no bluray drive and force those customers to DL the games.
theres nothing $ony can take out of the ps3 that it does not need.

i wish they would start releasing it in new colours.
and even better bring a new redesign same shape as the slim except have more curves especially on the face where the $ony logo is, and this time bring back the shiny piano black finish and the touch sensitive buttons.
but at least colours, we NEED more colours!
and id be nice to see some specially designed consoles like what M$ and ninty do.
god that halo 4 custom console is SEXY!!!!!!!

But hey a price cut never hurts sales wise I suppose as long as Sony is in the position to financially sustain it. This gen is coming to an end. I'm not sure price cut is going to change much about how this gen will end up but it's great for people who want another system. Even first time adopters. hehe. To them I would say what in the world took you so long.

Anyone know of any good tips on how to fix it, besides paying almost new PS3 retail price to Sony to repair it or using a hairdryer? I'm fairly good at building computers and taking components apart so anything you can do yourself to test the system would be appreciated!
Otherwise I guess it's about time to think about buying a replacement "new slim" when the new model comes out, hopefully it will look more like the original "fat ps3" 'cause I really don't like the look of the slim very much.
I got a "slim" from Target a while back (which I had to return because the blu-ray drive was noisy as hell on it so there must be something wrong that particular machine) but there were several things I really miss from my good 'ol fat PS3:
* Biggest one of all obviously - The PS2 compatibility. Not that I used it all that often, but at least then I COULD play FF X, FF X-2, FFXII if I wanted to, or one of our old DDR discs, Singstar discs etc, among our other old discs that still aren't available as HD remakes...
* only 2 USB ports - what the heck do you do if you want to play 4 instruments on Guitar Hero/Rock Band, or for that matter have two instruments connected to the usb ports, and charge a controller or two at the same time?? I mean WTH?!
* I REALLY miss the black glossy finish, the slim just looks grey & dull
* Also REALLY miss the touch sensitive power button/eject button, on the slim it feels like you're pushing buttons on a $5 90's radio, UGH... just feels really cheap...
* Why remove the power on/off switch in the back?? Is that seriously a cost-cutting measure needed?
It just really pains me to have to give up my old FAT PS3, and it's really amazing to me that 7 years after launch, you have to downgrade by buying a brand new PS3 model... how backward is that?!

Check GameStop, they sell phat PS3 certified refurbs, in 20, 40, 60, or 80 gigs.
BTW, if you do buy a Slim, & want an off/on switch, then check eBay cause there's sellers that have a off/on adapter(a couple of bucks)that sits right at the power cord's end where it plugs into the console.
I have it on my Slim & I love not having to see that red light on 24/7, or glowing in the dark.

I'd have to agree about the HDMI cable, why hasnt this been included since day 1? to cut costs? sure maybe when HD TVs were new the cables were expensive, but now they are pretty cheap.
