Sony May Announce A PS3 Price Cut Along With The New Model

The rumors concerning a new PlayStation 3 model have been rampant lately, the most recent set arriving with supposedly leaked pics that show a ridged machine. Kinda weird.

This is hot on the heels of various trademark and patent evidence that supports the idea of a new PS3 model, which may be revealed at GDC next month. They may also unveil three separate consoles with different hard drive sizes (16GB, 250GB, and 500GB respectively). But wouldn't it also make sense to announce a price drop for the current PS3 model at the same time? It may actually be inevitable at this point; either that, or the new 250GB PS3 will retail for $249, the same cost as the standard 160GB model now. That may not be a "price cut," per se, but it still means we're getting more for our buck.

Plus, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go into the holidays with some slightly cheaper hardware. Right now, it seems unlikely that they'll drop the price of the PlayStation Vita (unless sales really tank between now and the fourth quarter). And with more high-profile PS3 exclusives on the horizon (PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, God of War: Ascension, Beyond: Two Souls, The Last Of Us) and Sony's claims that the system has a long way to go, a price cut wouldn't be too shocking.

Oh, and one of these days, Sony is going to toss in a HDMI cable because not including one remains totally absurd.

I think a price cut would do sony well, it's pretty late in the console's life span, and for those that are still on the fence about it, this might just be that push needed to pick up a ps3 for the holidays.

I'd have to agree about the HDMI cable, why hasnt this been included since day 1? to cut costs? sure maybe when HD TVs were new the cables were expensive, but now they are pretty cheap.

Hell, Sony should include one of Monoprice's HDMIcables, which use the most modern HDMI cable standards, and also has Ethernet included inside it for around $4 at Monoprice dot com.

Plus, you can even get them in 7 to 8 different colors, & in lengths from 1.5 feet, all the way in-between up to 50 feet.
(I've used their cables up to 35 & 50 feet myself just so I could string my consoles around the living room & I will certainly swear by them).

Guys, have you seen how much sony charges for an HDMI cable? You really think they can "afford" to throw one in without upping the price. Or at least without bringing it down?

Well yeah, stay far away from the "named" stuff, for some reason they still think a cable costs $100, silly rabbits didnt get the memo.

yeah but when you buy your 2500$ TV+SoundSystem... You don't want to hook it up with a cheap wire. You want Monster Cable!!! lol 80-150$ a piece hahaha

Also, I think you have to be careful if you have a 3D TV you need cables with a much higher bandwidth than those 2$ cables you are talking about.

I agree Neo, but that doesn't mean they can't box-in a cheapy and let nitpickers spend more if they want.

I wonder how much they want for that 16 gigger. If mine ever goes kaput I'd get that and swap in a big drive.

I hope that ribbed one wasn't real, that was a pile.

Cut the Vita! Sure the price is reasonable but I'm cheap.

I'm also interested in that 16gig model. I have a decent 320gb ready from my YLOD'd phat PS3. With the new 16gig, I'll have all three PS3 versions lol... granted the original phat model doesn't work. :(

My fatty YLODed after 5 years, I used the hairdryer trick to resurrect it and save my saves. Technically it still works but I don't use it because it gets HOT so it's just for emergencies now.

sucky about the ylod. Though, it seems many have suffered ylod on any of the phats. My Slim seems to be doing fine. It doesn't get nearly as loud. I also try to preserve the function of my PS3 use to strictly games. I think one of the reasons my phat died so soon is because my family would watch netflix on it quite a bit. Add to that the occasional blu-ray movie with also game time. Meltdown, I reckon.

Anyhow, wish I knew about this hair dryer trick. I'd love to have had my NGS2 save back.

It's on the youtube, you run a very hot hairdryer against the vents for about 15-20 minutes and then let it cool off. (Best done with system in a box to keep the heat up) then the solder that has cracked over time cooks and reestablishes the proper connections.

That worked for me, but the unit still got really hot and I figured there was no sense waiting for it to die again, bought a Slim, backed up my saves and transferred the hard drive.

I think the PS3 is due for a $199 price tag. It's been $250 for a long time now. GDC would be a great time to announce it. If the new slimmer PS3 model turns out to be for real, then it should most definitely be cheaper: $199 for the 250gb and $250 for the 500gb. I'm not even entertaining the idea of a 16Gb PS3, only reason I'd buy is if it was super cheap so I could put my own drive in.

If the 3 different types are true, we'll have a $199 or lower PS3 for sure, meaning we should be getting a price cut. It wouldn't make sense to have three different PS3 priced $250 or higher, especially with the 16gb!

Maybes because of the 999,999 reasons TO include a harddrive? Such as practically every game released nowadays requires you to install some of the game onto your harddrive (because bluray is somewhat slow at reading data).

firstly because BC hardware is still really expensive, and secondly because allot of ps3 games have HDD installs so you need a HDD.
not to mention DLC, patches and PSN games or demos.
they would be better off offering one with no bluray drive and force those customers to DL the games.
theres nothing $ony can take out of the ps3 that it does not need.

i hope so!
i wish they would start releasing it in new colours.
and even better bring a new redesign same shape as the slim except have more curves especially on the face where the $ony logo is, and this time bring back the shiny piano black finish and the touch sensitive buttons.
but at least colours, we NEED more colours!
and id be nice to see some specially designed consoles like what M$ and ninty do.
god that halo 4 custom console is SEXY!!!!!!!

Well I like the idea. I've always kind of looked at price in terms of the console war. what can be done to close gap is what i ask myself. now a price cut helps boost sales for a little bit but it seems to fade and the old pattern sets in. i distinctly remember when the PS3 went down to $299. Sony beat MS in NA but it lasted for a grand total of 1 month. Yeah I know it's a global market but I've never been comfortable with how 360 centric NA feels. It litterally disgusts me actually. I don't like MS as a company. I don't think they earned their position in the console market. They just got very, very lucky.

But hey a price cut never hurts sales wise I suppose as long as Sony is in the position to financially sustain it. This gen is coming to an end. I'm not sure price cut is going to change much about how this gen will end up but it's great for people who want another system. Even first time adopters. hehe. To them I would say what in the world took you so long.

If so, grab the 16GB, then install a good brand 1T HD(Seagate, WD, Samsung, ETC) into it.

If you look around, you can find then for around $89, & sometimes they'll will be a special on then for $79, and refurbed HD's are even cheaper still)

Unfortunately my original fat 20gb PS3 seems to have given up with RLOD, i'm not sure why people call it YLOD or if there are two different errors, but there's no yellow light when my PS3 shuts off, just 3 blinking red lights before shutting off. It's happened several times now and last time only a couple of minutes after turning the machine on, just being in the XMB :-(

Anyone know of any good tips on how to fix it, besides paying almost new PS3 retail price to Sony to repair it or using a hairdryer? I'm fairly good at building computers and taking components apart so anything you can do yourself to test the system would be appreciated!

Otherwise I guess it's about time to think about buying a replacement "new slim" when the new model comes out, hopefully it will look more like the original "fat ps3" 'cause I really don't like the look of the slim very much.

I got a "slim" from Target a while back (which I had to return because the blu-ray drive was noisy as hell on it so there must be something wrong that particular machine) but there were several things I really miss from my good 'ol fat PS3:
* Biggest one of all obviously - The PS2 compatibility. Not that I used it all that often, but at least then I COULD play FF X, FF X-2, FFXII if I wanted to, or one of our old DDR discs, Singstar discs etc, among our other old discs that still aren't available as HD remakes...
* only 2 USB ports - what the heck do you do if you want to play 4 instruments on Guitar Hero/Rock Band, or for that matter have two instruments connected to the usb ports, and charge a controller or two at the same time?? I mean WTH?!
* I REALLY miss the black glossy finish, the slim just looks grey & dull
* Also REALLY miss the touch sensitive power button/eject button, on the slim it feels like you're pushing buttons on a $5 90's radio, UGH... just feels really cheap...
* Why remove the power on/off switch in the back?? Is that seriously a cost-cutting measure needed?

It just really pains me to have to give up my old FAT PS3, and it's really amazing to me that 7 years after launch, you have to downgrade by buying a brand new PS3 model... how backward is that?!

Crabba,
Check GameStop, they sell phat PS3 certified refurbs, in 20, 40, 60, or 80 gigs.

BTW, if you do buy a Slim, & want an off/on switch, then check eBay cause there's sellers that have a off/on adapter(a couple of bucks)that sits right at the power cord's end where it plugs into the console.
I have it on my Slim & I love not having to see that red light on 24/7, or glowing in the dark.

Id sure love to see a price cut in any system, my fatty from 2007 just died back in april and i miss being able to play my games, and Sony wants 130 bucks to repair it, although i want it repaired, id love to have another system at a decent price. My fatty has lasted awhile before YLOD though. A price cut might make me get a new one until i can get the fatty fixed.
