Rumor: Final Fantasy Versus XIII Has Died A Quiet Death

We told you it was nothing more than vaporware.

It has been six years since we first caught sight of the impressive Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and all we've had since that time are constant promises that say we'll get more info "soon." Now, according to Kotaku, it seems the anticipated title is no more.

"Several sources" have apparently said the game was officially cancelled within the last few weeks. Sadly, it was a decision that has hit Square Enix staff pretty hard, as morale is now quite low. On top of which, we may never know the real truth of the matter, as it seems Square Enix doesn't want to make any sort of announcement. They'd rather just let it fade away over time, possibly because a confirmation could result in declining stock value.

Earlier this year, there were rumors that Versus XIII had actually become Final Fantasy XV, thanks to a leaked video. But that was confirmed as fake, right? Still, it seems more possible than ever that whatever was Versus XIII has been - or is currently being - incorporated into the next installment in the primary franchise. That might not be a bad thing.

Still, if true, this is just more disappointment to heap atop the already depressing pile of disappointments for Square Enix fans this generation. Well, at least as far as Final Fantasy is concerned...and I still say I had fun with both FFXIII and FFXIII-2.

This rumor better be just a rumor and not true. I've still been waiting for vsXIII and all it's awesomeness. If it's true, I'll never see Square the same.

If S-E fail to complete this game, I won't even defend them from the harshest criticism they've received this gen. That 7 minute trailer shown years ago showed so much potential, I have been willing to be patient but to have it cancelled is devastating!

I personally don't believe it yet, That 7 minute trailer showed the game was in heavy production stages. It's not normal for a game to be cancelled so far into production is it. Take The Getaway 3, we only saw a few screenshots before that was cancelled. I want to wait and hope that it is not true.

I know a lot of folks here are going to be disappointed by the news, but just imagine how it feels to work on a game for SIX YEARS and then have the plug pulled.

For me, I say good riddance. Clearly that game was going nowhere, I was sick of the whole FF XIII cycle about three hours into FF XIII, and I think SE's singular focus on this one FF universe this generation was a colossal mistake. Move on, SE, and redouble your efforts on FF XV. Find a way back to what made FF so special in the first place.

IMO, what has happened here is that SE put in some guy who is obviously obliviuos to how to make a great game. He only wants to sell lots of games and is pointing the finger and saying, "Make great games!" because that is all he can do. Im betting that the talent is leaving SE and he is having a hard time replacing them to make this game.

Square Enix. What has happened to one of the most loved franchises in gaming history?

I'd love to know how much of the game was done when they announced it and how much was left to do when the cancelled it.

I find it hard to believe that a game that has been in development for 6 years just gets cancelled.

They didn't even want to talk about it when it was supposedly in production. So it should come as no surprise they don't want to tell us it's been cancelled. They never should have announced it in the first place, this game has clearly never had any real direction.

Pretty shady though if this rumour is true. If you're brazen enough to announce a game way too soon, grow a pair and fess up when you bail on it.

Feel bad for the team members working on it, no kidding morale is low. Once again SE drops the ball.

I so agree with you! If your gonna announce a game several years before it is done then make sure that your willing to tell the fans it has been cancelled.

This, if true is exactly why I HATE when companies announce a game more then 2 years away from release.

Also if this is true then I am done with SE as far as paying attention and giving a crap about them.

Off the record sourcing, reported by professional journalists, is hardly unfounded rumor-mongering. It's a way to get the real, behind the scenes story sometimes, including stories that maybe a company/official doesn't want you to hear. Was great reporting, and Ben was absolutely right to post about it here.

Ben, rumor or no, thanks for keeping us in the loop. And an extra thank you for indicating quite clearly when something is only rumor and not official. Not sure how else one could keep us informed while staying honest.

Don't listen to bad feedback like this. The day you stop filling us in on the latest information, unconfirmed or not, is the day I stop coming here.

To all the nay-sayers... how often have you watched the news and see them cover a live story saying things like, "it is not confirmed, but we believe.... yada yada" only to later be told, "we have now received confirmation that it was not, in fact, yada yada, but a ... blah blah blah. We will keep you informed as the story unfolds"

THIS IS HOW NEWS WORKS! haha... seriously!

Damn. So the supposed PS3 exclusive dies a quiet death? Never really thought it would remain exclusive but I am surprised it's totally cancelled. Hmm. maybe they didn't think they could finish before this generation ends. What in the world took them so long in the first place?

I've always wondered about Square's commitment to this project. They announced but NOTHING more to push it. I heard it was shown behind closed doors at last year's E3. There was some footage on the web. Square sure didn't say a whole lot about it though. In hindsight that is very telling.

I kind of doubt the truth of this but it does have a ring to it a la Last Remnant for PS3. If it's dead then that's probably good, as much as I love the old FF maybe it will take a colossal blunder like this to teach SE that they are on the wrong track with FF and their entire approach to this generation. Sad for Nomura if it's so.

It does have a ring of that!! I agree with that. I thing this rumor has just the right ring to it to be true. Square's never really felt commited to Sony this generation. I have heard some say it's all because of MS sticking their nose into the JRPG genre earlier this generation. They did do it. The JRPG's didn't do as well as expected so Square thinks the genre is dead or something. Poof!! JRPGs gone.

I dont believe it either. But if it is true, I will absolutely never buy anything from square again. I will buy anything they release that is interesting used. They wont be getting any of my money, seriously what kind of morons work at Square anyway?

Unless what we saw of the game was all they had managed to get done in six years this can't be true. Why would they waste all those resources even if they were mixed into FF15 for the next gen.

All hopes are not dead. According to multiple rumors, it would seem that Final Fantasy XV will be directed by Hiroyuki Ito (FF VI, IX and XII).

This guy is responsible for my favourite games in the series, so I'm still hopeful.

Let us all just go to the nearest S-E building and rabble. Maybe that will produce some results. I'd wager doing that would be more productive than arguing over whether or not rumors are crap or justifiable. As far as I am concerned I'd rather have a rumor than nothing at all. IF this project were cancelled at least we'd have closure and could move on as opposed to waiting with breaths held. If otherwise, there will be something at some undisclosed time down the line. In the meantime I do believe I'll just keep tabs on tangible up-and-comers like The Last Of Us and Beyond: Two Souls.

Even if it is cancelled you know it will all get recycled into FFXV somehow despite official announcements to the contrary. I'm sure stuff from the cutting room floor got into XIII-2 as well.

i honestly think xiii-2 was all cutting room floor stuff. they said they had to cut a lot of stuff out of xiii just to get it out. i havent played it but it would explain the need to time travel. just take the random parts of xiii they didnt use and shove them together with time travel to link them.

They just want it to fade away huh? Have people forgotten about the Last Remnant? Final Fantasy franchise is known world friggin' wide.

After the disaster that has become Square - enix this gen, we could stop talking about them for 3 years and someone could bring them up again and all of these bad memories would resurface.

Sorry SE, Time to close up shop. I say this because redemption doesn't seem possible at this point. If you manage to do so, I may just have a heart attack and develop a brain tumor.

If there's any truth to this, that's going to be the final nail for S-E in my books. FF Versus XIII was the ONLY S-E game I've been waiting for, and it's so ironic that it just 'died' like that.

Hopefully this whole fiasco (again, if true) would convince Tetsuya Nomura to quit S-E and start his own studio with Sony. We could definitely use more JRPGs on the PS3 and the Vita!
