id Software Used RAGE Tech To Bring DOOM Classics To PS3
What does RAGE have to do with the original DOOM classics?
Well, at first glance, absolutely nothing. id Software produced all of them but that's about the only similarity. Still, it's interesting how the team used a "stripped down" version of the RAGE technology to bring DOOM and DOOM 2 to the PlayStation 3. They'll be arriving with the anticipated DOOM 3 BFG Edition, which hits this fall.
As id Software Creative Director Tim Willits told Joystiq, they actually used id Tech 5 for those DOOM installments. id Tech 5 debuted with last year's RAGE. Said Willits:
"We never released Doom 1 and Doom 2 on the PlayStation Network. So we're like, 'OK, what's the easiest way to do this?' And what the guys did instead of rewriting all the network support, [support for] friends, and all that kind of stuff, is they took Rage, took out all the 'Rage' bits and put Doom 1 and 2 on top of it."
Willits also said that when PS3 players start those DOOM classics in October, they'll be "launching most of id Tech 5," with a "game loop that runs Doom 1 and Doom 2." And just to be clear, we still say RAGE is possibly the most impressive graphical title of the generation next to Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. You've got to see it to believe it.

So many console owners have a hard time believing this when I tell them, but the amount of texture issues is directly related to how full and/or fragmented the hard disc is.
I first played Rage on my Slim with a large drive, and experienced very few texture issues at all, and I found the graphics to be insane. I just could not believe my eyes.
Then at a later time I installed Rage on my fatty who barely had enough free space left for the game to install - the drive got entirely full after it was done installing. And Oh My God what a difference. I thought there was something wrong with the game at first.
But it's not really such a mystery. Rage is using the HD *constantly* during play.
So if you experience problems, try deleting as much as possible from your drive, including the Rage install, and install the game again. Chances are good that you will experience improvements.
You are right about the gameplay though. It takes more than pretty graphics for sure.

Right now Steam won't boot because it fails everytime it tries to do it's automatic update. LAAaaame. but not as lame as the FFVII PC launch ;) ... and secuROM? okay, so it's a rental anyway.
Anyhow, this Doom collection looks appealing. It doesn't look like the overhaul I was hoping Doom 3 to be, but oh well. Still good. And Resurrection of Evil is where it's at!
