Ubisoft Explains Why Assassin's Creed III Won't Get A Beta

These days, it's common for most any big title to provide gamers with a beta test. That multiplayer needs to be tested, ya know!

But don't expect a beta for the upcoming Assassin's Creed III. Although Ubisoft had betas for the last two AC entries (Brotherhood and Revelations), the developer won't be creating a test for the new one. During a recent XboxGameZone interview with multiplayer game director Damien Kieken, we learn the reasons behind that decision:

"To be honest, its something we want to do every year because we get community feedback that helps us tune the game. It is also a good reward for the community that has followed us from the beginning. But doing a beta takes a lot of time. Wed need to polish a version, submit it to the platform holders and support it when its out. And all the time put into the beta doesnt go into the final game. Because we wanted to push so many things into the game, we took the hard decision to favor the final game content instead of doing a beta and we believe it will be favorable in the end."

We're okay with that. While the multiplayer should be plenty entertaining, many will agree that this franchise has always been more about the epic single-player experience. And we have to remember that with time and resources dedicated to a beta, Kieken is right about having that much less to throw at the final product. ...yet another example of how multiplayer may potentially have impeded the progress of campaign quality this generation.

Good for them. Feedback is good but I'm almost certain the majority of beta "testers" are not supplying feedback. I also can onlyImagine in house QA testing is much more efficient.

Usually the feedback from beta testers of an online game is in the form of playing it in itself. They need to test connectivity between the clients and stability of the servers with a lot of connections, and that's next to impossible to do inhouse.

When they feel they can skip the beta period this time around, one reason could be that they basically use the same network code and servers as they did in earlier games, so it's already tried and tested.

That was kind of my point. That it really isn't needed, as 2 other AC games had mp. I'm not sure why AC even has mp. I was actually pretty upset that you had to play the mp in AC brotherhood to get all the trophies. So I didn't even bother.

I don't see why they put MP into that game at all. Assassins Creed is just so *obviously* a single player experience.

Did anyone try MP in AC? Is it anything out of the ordinary? I never tested it.

(In fact Ben, this is a franchise where I never missed coop! lol)

im not big on mp but ac mp is a lot different than most. i didnt get sucked in and play for a long time but i did have a good time. trying to figure out who is your target can be a lot of fun. honestly i am glad they made the mp even if i dont play it much. it shows thinking outside the box can be much better.

I've played the MP quite a few times and yeah, it's really good and it just a really good take on multiplayer. Definitely recommend you give it a go. It's quite fun.

Wait, wait, wait, wait. I can't wrap my head around this. So, a developer and publisher agreed to set aside devoted time from working on multiplayer... to work on single-player?

I think I just cried a little with joy.

That's great I'd rather have a polished game than a buggy one because of MP

they made the right decision!
especially with a game so focused on SP, the MP really is not that popular and it does not really need the stress testing say BF would!
i just wish they would spend some time in showing us something different!
every god dam gameplay trailer has been you climbing trees and taking down large groups of enemies!
so when are we going to see the building climbing, rooftop chases, and stealth single assassination kills the series is famous for!?
