Sleeping Dogs Sequel Depends On Sales And Gamer Interest

Next week is pretty big, due partly to the fact that United Front Games and Square Enix will deliver the highly anticipated Sleeping Dogs.

As is typically the case, if a game does well, there's always the chance of a sequel. And that's exactly what could happen if Wei Shen's adventure earns high marks and more importantly, registers decent sales numbers. Gotta bring in the cash.

In speaking to Dealspwn, producer Dan Sochan said that from the start, Square Enix believed in the project. They are thinking about making it a franchise if things go as planned:

"I think that they've helped establish this game's identity, and helped to differentiate between the large number of other open-world games out there, so we're not just going to be buried by the large number of sequel titles coming out later this year. So there are elements they've brought in to try and ensure a long tail, that there are reasons to come back to the game even after you've finished the main story, and maybe put us in a position where we can make a sequel if the game does well."

As for the future direction of the new series, Sochan said "there are a lot of different ways" they could approach the next installment. Of course, you first have to establish a solid fan base that expresses their desire for another entry, and the producer adds that gamer feedback is crucial.

"We want to hear what gamers think, what aspects of the game they enjoyed the most, we want them to be able to go 'If you do a sequel, you should totally do this...' and so on. So of course we've considered it, and we'll have to see how Sleeping Dogs does, but this is new ground for us and so we really want to make sure that the fans are happy."

Sleeping Dogs, the game formerly called True Crime: Hong Kong, is slated to hit on Tuesday, August 14.

It's already a franchise, just renamed :) The game looks great and I'd love to buy it but with Dishonored and DOA5 coming up I just can't swing it. I read the early reviews are really high.

I have little interest in this game. It looks good, the gameplay and physics I saw in action looked pretty average though.

I think I'll wait for a review before I try out a demo or something.

I've got an off and on game of that going too, it's too bad Persona 4 isn't available cept on PS2. P4 is a big step forward for the series. I'm just dying waiting for Persona 5 and they go and release a P4 fighting game.

Cool, I can see why people are upset that the fighting game came out instead of P5. Even though the fighting game looks outstanding, this Persona series is well done and addicting. This is old school turn base. I am also highly anticipating P4G! I am sure P5 will be done some day.

I want it but sadly, my gaming funds have developed a nasty case of wallet moths.

I'm still not impressed enough with this game to buy it yet. So far the reviews I've seen have been two ok's and one great.

GI - 7.75
OXM US - 75
OXM UK - 90

Those aren't bad for the game and still warrant a play. I mean no matter what I'll play it someday.

The wife and I started a budget so the only game I'm able to fit in the budget is Darksiders II collector's edition.

Saw the Hard Boiled Gun Play trailer today it looks awesome!

I hear you DazeOfWar, I am on a budget too but just had a Bday and haven't bought my non-psn game yet. I am on the fence for Dragon's Dogma or now Sleeping Dogs. I don't need a new game right now with P3P but SD looks really fun! Might wait for a few more reviews to decide.

Ya I've been really trying to clean out some of my backlog to use those games toward future purchases. Like November when ACIII: Liberation for the Vita and maybe the COD for Vita. Plus I was going to pick up Blops II and ACIII so those will probably be my finals for the year cause I need to save a lot of money for next year.
