Tomb Raider Devs Cite Batman, Bond As "Change" Inspirations

In order for a franchise to remain popular over a long period of time, it's imperative that some changes come around every once in a while.

And for the iconic Tomb Raider franchise, developer Crystal Dynamics knew they needed to implement some new ideas and freshness if they wanted Lara Croft to survive.

Studio boss Darrell Gallagher believed Tomb Raider "was facing a crisis" and was basically no longer interesting or relevant for a modern audience. So his team had to return to the beginning, and used Batman and James Bond as inspirations for telling the story of Lara's early days.

"We knew we were facing a problem with a franchise that, at the point of starting development, had been around for 13 years. We knew that to stay relevant we had to change. We wanted to strip it down, give Lara a personality and watch her grow as a character and make her feel more human and believable. Not many game franchises have run as long as Tomb Raider and we were faced with a challenge that many more titles will eventually have to face.

We looked at Batman Begins and Casino Royale and we looked at other franchises in other mediums and said, well how have they remained relevant over the years? We looked at Batman and Bond and said: ‘Wow, they’ve really done a great job,’ And as other franchises have yet to go through this change, we used them as inspiration."

When we first saw Tomb Raider, the differences were clear. Lara did appear to be more of a human than a cartoon, and the atmosphere was darker, more intense, more dramatic. This is exactly the type of game that would fly with modern audiences so on first glance, it appears Crystal Dynamics has done their job well. The Tomb Raider reboot debuts on March 5, 2013.

Yeah i've got to say after five Tomb Raider games on the PSone, one shite effort on PS2 & a handful of mostly disappointing offerings this gen i'm surprised this series is still staying afloat but to their credit this new Tomb Raider is looking really promising.

If this fails though, it really will be the end of the series but i hope that doesn't happen.

Looking forward to seeing what they can do with this title.

Really looking forward to this one. The whole rebooting the franchise is an excellent idea, it is going to give the character room to develop. Which should make for some great story telling in future titles.

Plus it looks like they are borrowing enough ideas from Uncharted to make an edge of your seat action packed game.

I definitely want this game. I just ordered Arkham City to finally join the batranks, I know they were referring to the films but I think that game rebooted Batman for gaming.

It's going to be interesting to hear what you think of that game. What's your relation with Batman and DC Comics?

Little, I don't read comics. I've seen every Batman movie and a handful of the animated series' from like 10 years ago. I used to watch the live action Wonder Woman as a kid because I wanted to bang her :)

Not only did the rebooters of Batman and James Bond not feel the need to change the basic character of their protagonists, but Crystal Dynamics are hardly Frank Miller, Christopher Nolan or Tim Burton. I fail to see why it was "necessary" to bowdlerise the Lara Croft so that she is no longer an aristocrat, an archaeologist or even 100% English any more. It has no relevance to the game play, and shows so little respect for an iconic character it borders on Anglophobia.

its the changes which have made this look so good!
its nice to see a adventure game but something that is not your typical rambo michael bay BS!
cough uncharted.........
i just hope they have allot of puzzles in the game, they have shown a few off which looked brilliant really well thought out!
but they need to show more, far too many games these days are taking a shy away from puzzles.
cough GOW3.
they were the best part about the first 2 games, 3 had allot less and they were allot smaller and simpler.

Yes, because Tomb Raider was extremely original & far from samey after three outings.

THink i'll pass on this. She got annoying real quick. too much screaming, one too many "get off of me". Samething happened to me in DMC3, awsome gameplay but Dante got really annoying. After the scene where he rode a missle, I was done. Oh well, Doom 3 BFG all the way baby!

Can't wait to get my hands on this. I beat Tomb Raider 1,Angel of Darkness (almost), Legend, and Underworld. (Maybe one day I'll beat 2, 3, and Last Revelation lol). But anyway I'm glad to see this franchise getting a fresh reboot :)
