Dragon Age III Rumored Info: Lots Of "Drama And Suspense"

BioWare is currently working on the third Dragon Age, and it seems clear that they're listening to the fans.

Thanks to various surveys and leaked information that has popped up in the NeoGAF forum, it appears we have some possible baseline info on DAIII. All rumor for the time being, though, so keep that in mind.

Here's a portion of the plot we may experience:

"A portal between the worlds unleashes hords of demons in the land, civil wars rip apart nations and the corruption is limitless. Someone is behind the shadows, drawing the threads which destroy the world. Time has come for the Inquisition.

Take the Inquisitor's cloak and lead the only force able of bringing light into the darkness. Choose the direct method and gather your armies, send spies into the shadows or engage in a political war, make friends and use your connections indirectly: it is up to you how you lead the inquisition. But you'll have to take lead of it from the beginning. Make your player a rogue, warrior or mage and set up your crew from up to ten (!) complex companions to lead them against those who attack you by systematically spying on, revealing and destroying them."

As for features that might make the final cut, we see things like "special finishing moves," online and co-op modes, a whole lot of "drama and suspense" and "crucial decisions," and overall better party management. Me, I'd love to be able to fully equip all my party members, thank you very much, and a world closer to the original Dragon Age would be appreciated, rather than just a bunch of maps connected via boring central hub.

I maintain that DAII was a fine game and a decent RPG. But more could've been done and it fell shy of BioWare's potential. Any fellow RPGers agree?

I really hope DAIII gameplay is more like origins then II hacknslash and didnt like being stuck in Kirkwall the rest of the game was ok.

There wasn't more classes in the earlier Dragon Ages, were there? Not that I can recall...

You'll probably get plenty choices within the skill trees of those three main classes, in regards to abilities and specialties.

Oh, one point I wanted to make in the discussion about japanese games and story telling and the 'gibberish' comment by Ubisoft's man.

As anyone that watches a decent about of anime, especially the non-action anime, will know, there are plenty of really 'out there' settings and scenarios in anime (and Manga). However the way it almost always seems to work is that the setting, characters and subplots can be as whacky and weird as possible, but the central story, or the underlying story that knits the episodes together is typically a much more meaningful and subtle affair.

Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere is a reasonable example. If you watch just one or two episodes of that, you will be thoroughly confused and probably walk away thinking that the makers of it were working on a fairly heavy hallucinogen intake. However, if you watch several episodes you start to see the underlying story which features love, honor, duty, self sacrifice and even a little exploration of what it means to be human. But you actually have to watch m ore or less the entire show to get all the nuances. The superficial story and sub-plots, the setting and odd characters are all there almost to distract you. I've seen this in a lot of anime, it's almost like the superficial and whacky is there to distract you from the underlying story so that it creeps up on you.

Another thing that they will often do is something that Tarantino did in Pulp Fiction. Story points will be exposed to the viewer out of sequence or tangentially, so that at the time they are revealed to the viewer they don't make much sense, or appear to be unrelated or insignificant. Yet later they are woven into the underlying story in a way that pays off for the viewer that has seen all the episodes.

That's not to say that all anime, Manga or games from Japan do this, they clearly do not. But it is something I have observed on a number of occasions both in Anime and games.

One other aspect of this is character motivation. the culture in Japan places a different emphasis on certain aspects of humanity. Duty, honor, loyalty, self sacrifice, etc... The idealized view of the honorable warrior or samurai does have a resonance in their story telling. Characters will sometimes do things for reasons that do not appear to a western sensibility to make as much sense as they do for someone in Japan. Even the use of honorifics and social niceties is so different that character behavior and motivation can be sufficiently different from a western character that it can cause confusion.

It's not so much about defending Japanese story telling or trying to convince anyone that it;s somehow better. It's more a case of pointing out that it's no better or worse than story telling in Western media, but there are many differences that separate the two and being different does not equate to being gibberish. The Ubisoft dude really came across as expecting that story telling from a completely different culture should be the same as it is in the West, otherwise it would be inherently inferior. I'm sure you know how I feel about that kind of mindset. I don't consider any culture inherently superior to another, and really have a problem when others do.

I really hope the third game takes equally from 'Origins' and 'II.' Because, while there were certainly things from 'Origins' that I missed in 'II', the second game did some things that I thought were definite improvements over the first.

That rumor has me worried, a portal between which worlds exactly? Magic portals tend to lead to sloppy stories. I don't really want to command any large forces or send nations to war. This isn't Fable 3. Just give me my crew, a terrible enemy, a good story, and insurmountable odds.

It doesn't have to be all bad. Remember that Mass Effect 2 also had that final portal to enter once you were ready. It doesn't have to be more than just a point of no return in the story, the grand finale.

I sense classic Bioware story qualities here, I can almost guarantee you it will contain what you ask for: Your focus will be on your crew with all their personal little worries and problems, a terrible enemy that will puzzle and amaze you and make the odds look insurmountable, a really good story with surprising twists and turns.

Yup, I'm pumped. Another Bioware adventure awaits!

It's never stupid to wait for a price drop. I'm a diehard Bioware fan so I'll get it full price, but 9/10 games I buy are from the bargain bin, and I always suggest others to do the same.

It's a better deal, no question about it.

They seem to stick to their classic storyline formula of gathering your party before the final confrontation, with all those personal stories tied to each individual character. It's a formula I don't think they've ever strayed off from but I'm fine with that. It's something they have become incredibly good at and probably is the main reason I love Bioware.

Oh, and I'll be a rogue I think. Or mage. But probably rogue. Can't wait for another Bioware adventure!!

Well, there is a new set of characters and story each time, just set in the same universe. But yup, it is formulaic. Very much so. Very, very Bioware. I mean it, I think every RPG I've played from them essentially are built on that basic framework.

... But I've not gotten tired of it yet. :)

(God I love those games... If you lived close by I'd force feed them into your PS3 ;) )

Yeah I also love that formula. Meeting people on a journey and finding mutual goals or using people to get to the end game :D

That is just how it goes in life you know lol Go down on the street to conquer the world and I bet you'll start alone. After a few kilometers you might get a few followers lol.

Dragon Age 3, featuring a more streamlined approach, we've gutted leveling, and gotten rid of the inventory for a more quick and easy game experience. According to polls, dialogue trees were getting in the way of the action so we got rid of them. We scrapped the combat engine and made it more inline with recent God of War games, to keep the action fast paced and in your face. We've gotten rid of the map and replaced it with one dungeon for you to explore, to ensure no one gets lost or overwhelmed with side quest. Speaking of side quests those are out too, replaced with micro-transaction shop in which you can buy rare items not found anywhere in the game.

All the choices you don't make will lead to the climactic ending of choosing one of three brand new colours. This time we're featuring yellow, aqua, and purple. Which ending will your non choices get you?

Sorry I had too :P, but in all seriousness I really hope they actually make it more like DA:O. For me they are competing against The Witcher 2, so they have big BIG shoes to fill. I hope they do as I loved DA:O and a game more in line with it would be excellent.

Yeah, sadly all my friends joke when an RPG is released. Bioware in particular though has just been on a streamlining frenzy with their last couple of games. Square enix followed with FF13, and it seems like everything is turning into a shooter or an action game.

Possibly why I think Darksiders 2 is such a breath of fresh air. It just offers so much content and different types of gameplay in one delicious package.

I wouldn't be surprised if DS2 was more of an RPG than DA3, but I do hope I am wrong.

If they do this right. I can see myself playing this as much has I played origins lol

Origin playtime:

PC: 350hrs - ish

360: 215hrs - ish

PS3: 175hrs - ish

Played less on PS3 although I prefered the PS3 version than that of the 360 (360 version had crpa textures). My GF was all over my PS3 at that time so I had to play on the 360 lol.

Still after all those hours I could still start a new game and I bet I would enjoy it just as much. That is not something I can say from DA II that I only played on PS3 for around 40hrs XD

Relating to another article that said we don't have time to be hardcore anymore... If this game is worth it, I will make time to be hardcore :D

LOL well to be fair I am just a Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age Origins fan haha I did not play all of their games :P (did play some NeverWinter Nights but only the first one and no more than 40-50hrs)

I really thought DA:O was a good return to the roots that was Baldur's gate and I couldn't get enough of it lol. So y'know you might still be their biggest fan haha.
