The Last Guardian Devs Were Forced To "Re-Do" Some Work

Earlier, it was rumored that The Last Guardian may have been tragically abandoned.

And oh how tragic that would've been. But as we found out from SCEA's Eric Levine - and posted up on Twitter immediately thereafter - the game is indeed still in development. But what's the current status of the title?

Eurogamer asked Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida that very thing at Gamescom, and his reply was...well, sort of encouraging, depending on your point of view.

"The team is still working on it very hard There are certain technical issues they've been working on. That's the period of time when the game, looking from the outside, doesn't seem to be making much progress. But internally there is a lot of work going into creating the title."

It seems the biggest problem is that the team had to go back and make significant changes. Unfortunately, Yoshida says the technical issues turned out to be very problematic, which has resulted in this lengthy development cycle. Basically, the team had to go back and fix stuff.

"We had the game playable. At one point we felt that it would be produced for a certain time period. That was the time we prematurely talked about the launch window. But it turned out the technical issues are much harder to solve. So the engineering team had to go back and re-do some of the work they had done."

It's never good to get deep into a project only to learn that the game simply doesn't work. Or at least, it doesn't work half as good as you had anticipated. And when it comes to The Last Guardian, expectations are through the roof, so... But anyway, yes, this is still a PS3 game. For now.

I don't have much faith in this game anymore, is Team ICO even involved now?

Well let just put it this way. Its good that SCEA and Team Ico found out this technical issue and try to fix it. I dont want buggy game like Skyrim, Call of duty on the ps3 and have to wait for countless of patches to fix the issue that was supposed to be fix before launch.

This really upsets me. The two games I've looked forward to the most before even getting a PS3 have so far let me down. First FFXIII and now this.

I'm very curious as to what the problems were. I guess we wont get any substantial information till after the game's release. ICO and SOTC are timeless perfection in my eyes...maybe I expected too much from this game as well as others.

Me too. Though not so much this game. For me, I'd have to say Final Fantasy XIII and Resident Evil 5. I was really looking forward to both. Both were major letdowns. Though not all was lost as the game I didn't care much for at first because I didn't like the 2nd one was Metal Gear Solid 4. That was a very pleasent surprise. I had not yet played Snake Eater until after I played 4.I loved the first game, but not the second one so I never cared to play 3. I took a chance on 4 (didn't follow it before it released) and it turned out to be my favorite game of this generation.

It will be interesting to see how much this game cost Sony to make once it's gone gold.

understandable, and to be honest i dont think anyone would care if $ony just showed a screenshot!
SOMETHING!
ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
people just want reassurance that it IS still in development, especially in this day and age where publishers and devs lie through their teeth!
this is one of those games people will wait as long as they need to wait for, there getting antsy because there worried its been canned!
and till $ony proves against that, IE release some screenshots or a gameplay trailer, that will continue!

Sony needs to stop pumping money into this very lazy studio, Team Ico should be really embarrassed with themselves. Naughty Dog has made 3 uncharted games and soon to be released the last of us before Team Ico does one game and there game will be lucky to sell nearly as well as any one of those games.
