Let's Just Say It: GTAV Screens Could Very Well Be Next-Gen
I think we're all sort of dancing around the obvious, here.
I've been looking at video game screenshots and media for many years. Over the course of the industry's history, this has proven to be an interesting - and ever-changing - process.
Back when magazines were pretty much all we had, how new games photographed was a constant issue of debate among us hardcore fans. Then when CGI started to gain a foothold during the original PlayStation days, we started to ask inevitable questions about still-frame shots we saw before a game released (especially an RPG with lots of cut-scenes). Perhaps most recently, we get powerful hardware with tons of media often available online, and that media could be touched up in some way, running on a system most don't have, or even, at the end of a generation, screenshots from a game that could be on both current- and next-gen consoles.
The new GTAV screenshots have arrived, only a day or two after the Transport images surfaced. These new pics show off some leisure activities, such as parachuting, tennis, and dirt biking. But there is an extreme amount of detail involved, even up close, to the point where we have to start questioning the origin of the screenshots. After which, we have to consider the project's position and the distinct possibility that in fact, GTAV might launch for at least one next-generation platform. The Xbox 720 seems to be the prime candidate right now.
GTA has never set the graphical bar in any generation as its vast open-world approach requires a ton of processing power and with every extra mile, less detail can be included if the game is to run correctly (without the frames per second slowing to a crawl). Right now, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim might feature the most stunning visual presentation in the open-world genre, but that isn't close to what we're seeing in these GTAV screens. There is a flat crispness, a minimal amount of pixelation/jaggies even on a close-up inspection; the vehicles (look at the bike closest to you in the top photo) and the people seem a touch too perfect.
...for this generation, anyway.
Last generation, there were quite a few games that launched on the PS3 and PS2, for instance, and some multiplatform titles that released for just about everything; PS3, 360, PS2, Xbox, etc. That only lasted for a year or so but it proves that "generation-straddling" has been done before. Plus, GTAV appears to be taking quite a long time, longer than even analysts predicted when it was first officially revealed in December of last year. It's feasible that this delay (GTAIV launched in April 2008, remember) is due to the simple fact that Rockstar is churning out one of the first games to launch for next-generation and current-generation hardware. Just a theory.

Personally all I wonder is could it be that they this time around will release a version for *both* generations? ... Or will history repeat itself and I will be buying a new console bundled with GTA - just like how I got my PS3?
I would not mind that at all.
Oh man, look at the backgrounds in all those screenshots and think about how all those locations you see there, the houses on the hill, the bridge, the woods behind the mointaintop... All that can be reached and explored too. It's not just backdrop.

And frankly, when you look at these screenshots, along with footage of games like Star Wars 1313 and Watchdogs, it's crystal clear that these games are being optimized for the next gen. If games next-gen look like this, I am PUMPED. UP.

Incidentally, Skyrim actually reminds me of GTA: San Andreas in a way. That game, one of the most fun and celebrated of the PS2 era, was a blast and looked awesome for the time, but it was at that point in the console's life cycle when you couldn't help but notice the system had reached its limits. Same thing with Skyrim -- looks gorgeous, but you can imagine without much effort how much better the world COULD look with next-gen hardware. I just think we're at that point in the PS3s/360s life cycle now, and I think that's also why people may get more excited about the next gen than they anticipate.

Edit/ Although, upon looking at the other released screenshots I wonder if more than just Los Santos will be included in this game? I remember hearing "the surrounding countryside" is included, but those rivers and the inclusion of planes makes me wonder if maybe it IS the San Andreas trio of cities (or maybe two of the cities and the terrain between)?

I'm not 100% convinced yet though because the Red Dead Redemption shots look twice as good as the game is.

Well, it's a little curious. The pictures here doesn't look NEXT Generation for Me BUT, the first Trailer, it has some segments where I just Amazed while seeing them. So, maybe is not only the detail but also the effects put in them. I hope a Next Generation game looks better and "FEELS" better (even a Open World Game like this one).

But if this is representative of what the AAA games for the PS4 will deliver from more or less day one, I am one happy puppy.
Next gen can not come fast enough.

I would suspect Rockstar outright hired that person to work on this, or at the very least realized they could make GTA5 look super ridiculous.
The shading looks like Direct X11, so this is probably just a really souped up PC version. If you look closely youll notice that the Models still look sort of low poly in some of the screens. However the dirbike image shows some tessalation going on which leads me to believe its on a high end PC, or I suppose a next gen console.
My theory is Rockstar knows how popular this game will be, so they are making it for the current gen, and high end PCs, as well as next gen consoles. If next gen consoles are powerful enough the port from PC will be easy. This way they cover all the markets they can. I think they would be foolish to make it next gen exclusive as they would lose millions of potential sales.

Temjin, hmmm you do know more about graphics than I do, however is the treading on the dirt bike not tessellation? Which I thought was only a DX11 feature right?
All in all I still think its a PC version, mostly due to the fact that I'm in denial about next gen console coming this soon >.<

There's just zero reason to produce screenshots like this that are, essentially, lying to the consumer. DICE and EA did a high-end PC thing with BF3 but they confirmed almost immediately that it was just that and furthermore, I am NOT one of those people who thought that presentation looked THAT much better than the eventual console versions.
From a marketing standpoint, I just see making such screenshots with a platform nobody will have access to as being highly counterproductive. You'll just piss people off.

I guess we will have to wait and see what rockstar says. I'm sure people will bug them as to what platform they were taken from, next gen or otherwise.
As for BF3, yeah screenshots they don't look much different to be honest. But when your playing the two you can see the difference. The soldiers have like triple the animations, everything looks smoother, and the water reflections stand out. Again in screen shots you wont notice this stuff really. I played the beta for the PC and PS3 so I'm going off what I remember from almost a year go, might not be 100% accurate:P

And Xenris those tires don't appear tessellated and I don't think it would make sense to in that instance. All I see are some extruded polygonal faces matching a tire pattern. Tesselation is cool. I get to play with it and other like sub-division tools in 3ds Max.
Oh, and tesselating isnt exclusive to a Direct X API, or nothing. Anything fully programmable and fast enough could be coded to run a sub division calculation. I know PS3 exclusives use custom coded effects handled by the Cell's PSUs, even PS3 BF3 does, surprisingly enough.

Do check out my Deviant gallery guys. I placed this up temporarily. Just look at my 2 newest deviations (Crysis 2). Both are taken directly from their respective frame buffers. The PC shot comes straight from my PC ;)
Ben, you really don't see much of a difference there? I know these shots look quite a bit different in motion and on a bright, higher contrast HDTV, but the number of differences here are remarkable, considering their both on level ground being stills grabbed straight from the output feed (granted theyre slightly compressed due to jpeg). And Crysis 2 runs on my setup runs at a relatively solid 45-60fps. Basically, if someone told me this PC Crysis 2 shot was near next-gen, I'd believe it.
And defintaly "click into" these shots to view them at their native res.

These are people like Temjin who work with graphics on a day to day basis.
I still stand by it being the PC version. Heck it might even be the PS3 version, but honestly the screens aren't impressive enough for me to think its next gen. If those are in fact Nextbox screens, then I'm sure the PC version will look similar anyway.
I also don't get Ben why you think only two people on the planet would be able to play something that looked like this. Not only can you change graphics settings on the PC, but they can make a really high quality looking version for the PC and then downscale it for the consoles. They did similar things with games that were on the PS3 and PS2, which is an even bigger leap than a Top end gaming rig and the PS3.
Also more than two people have high end gaming rigs, NO one has a next gen console so why show screenshots on a console that hasn't been announced yet?
As for why they would make the first screenshots look that good? Same reason DICE showed high end PC footage first for BF3, to build hype its simple as that.
I'm not disagreeing that there is a possibility that it might launch on a next gen console. I'm more disagreeing with your opinion on how limited PC gaming rigs are these days.

Isn't that a contradiction?
(NB: Not that I disagree with you here - I too think these screens represent the level of what to expect from the PS4 if GTA5 is released for that platform)

Beamboom: It's not contradictory at all. These pictures aren't THAT much superior to what we have. They're just one step above, in my opinion, which points towards next-generation hardware that isn't necessarily full of massive power.

I said it wasn't out of the ordinary for rockstar to touch up screen shots. If its a PC version maybe its not touched up, maybe it is. The fact of the matter is screens often get touched up regardless of platform.
Do you know how many PS3 games have touched up screens? Killzone 2 devs admitted to doing it, infamous 2 had touched up screens, even uncharted 2s screens had some smoothing going on. More recently Batman Arkym City for the PS3 had screen shots touched up as well. So it does happen. I have a good tv and up until starhawk, most of my PS3 games had jaggies when the screenshots for them showed none. I also see them on my friends TVs.
Sorry but if your going to have a condescending tone then I'm going to have one right back at you.
PCs built for gaming are way more powerful than the PS3 its a fact. Just because YOU don't want to believe it doesn't mean its not true. I love my PS3 but I also know its not gods gaming gift to man.
Your point about this screen potentially being from a next gen console is still silly. It makes way more sense that it would be from a current gen console or a PC then a console that for all we know doesn't exist. I just don't see why they would show screen shots running it on a platform no one owns.
As for why your never impressed by games running on a monster PC I can't help you there. You seem to have shutters on or something because there are obvious differences. If a game is built ground up for the PC and only the PC that is when you notice the differences the most. With consoles being the focal platforms right now, it somewhat limits the PC ports of those games, BF3 being the exception.
Witcher 2, Metro 2033, BF3, and Crysis (especially Crysis1) are good examples of games when cranked on a monster machine look insane. If you can't see that then its on your end. Your telling me that video of how amazing GTA4 can look modded didn't impress you at all? It looks borderline real life. And many people can run that mod its not just two people.

Graphic whores bother me. That's why PC elitists bother me. I know what a PC specifically built for gaming can do, and I also know that dollar-for-dollar, a $250 console is basically always on par with a $1000 PC, unless a person in the know added special parts or built it from the ground up. Only once you start hitting big dollars do all these mammoth specs show up. Big damn deal. Why should I be impressed with that? I'm relatively certain Sony or Microsoft could produce a BEAST of a console for $1000.
All this is saying is that a ton of money makes something look better. Yay. That's not what gaming is to me, and I'm sick of PC elitists making it sound like the be-all, end-all of the hobby. Furthermore, GTA has NEVER been a PC-oriented franchise. Battlefield? Yeah, of course. Makes sense to show it running on a high-end PC. But GTA? Give me a break. GTAIV PC didn't even come out until almost 8 months after the PS3 and 360 versions. Rockstar isn't Bethesda and they're not Valve. Their primary market is consoles. That's obvious.
All things considered, and based on everything I've seen in the generation, it's FAR from "silly" to think these shots are taken from a next-gen platform. We have evidence from everywhere stating that devs have been working on next-gen projects for a LONG time (just look at yesterday's news concerning Sony's Liverpool studio). There's no reason to believe GTAV couldn't launch on the Xbox 720 and the current-gen consoles. It happened plenty during the last generational crossover.
I'm pretty much done with this. Anybody thinking logically and not blinded with PC bias would see this as common sense.

I'm not a graphics whore, my favourite games of any generation were not because of the amount of polygons. But again this topic is about graphics, so I fail to see relevance to your point. It only looks on par because the PC gets held back, anyone who knows about graphics and programing knows this.
Have you seen the new Cryengine 3, Unreal Engine 4, and Squares new engine? Those would make a PS3 melt, guess what those engines are running on? PCs baby.
GTA started on PCs if I'm not mistaken however you are correct that their target market is now on the consoles.
I agreed with you, that it could launch on a next gen console with current gen consoles as well. I think I said that in my very first post. What I do think is silly is that you think these screens are more likely from an unannounced console instead of a PC version of the game or even a touched up Console version.
Remember how awesome GTA4 looked? They've had what 5 years to make a game look even better on current hardware, so why wouldn't I assume this is PC or current gen? Especially considering how talent the guys at rockstar are.

Personally, I think most everyone here who thinks these GTA5 shots are something special, like next-gen special, have all been deceived by camera angles and a Rockstar guy who understands tone values well enough for setting up a clean shot. I can spot a half dozen things in these pics that scream current gen.
It'll be hilarious reading all the crap flying around once these shots are confirmed as current console representations and how a multiplat (XBox 360 grade) has preceivably trumped PS3's exclusives, so much so people are thinking these Rockstar pics qualify for next gen (I totally won't agree). And to be perfectly honest, as all of Rockstar's past games have shown, they tend to run a little smoother and at a higher res on 360.
Not a single GTA5 shot there has anything over any of those exclusive PS3 pics I just referenced. This is just silly and eye roll worthy to the max.
For me it's a wait and see thing. When the time comes and the truth is made known, I'll just grimace and move on. No parading around telling everyone I told them so either.

Also you are aware that that 250$ console is nothing without HDMI cables and a Hi Def tv right? So does your 250$ console look super awesome without your 1000 dollar plasma tv? Lets look at when the PS3 launched, 600 or more dollars, and HDTVs were really expensive. So early buyers were spending upwards of 1000$ on a console including a TV. So you were not getting a deal, and a top of the line PC out performed it.
My PS3 was 450 bucks, then I bought HDMI cables, a HDTV (although much later) and an extra controller, and a game and it was over 1000$ bucks. I love when people forget to factor in the TV which without it the games look like trash. I played my PS3 on my SD tv and uncharted 1 looked pretty bad. The change was night and day.
Gaming started on PCs and it will die with prepackaged overpriced custom PCs called consoles, that are sold for twice the money that the hardware is worth.
Again I love my PS3 I love consoles for what they do, but it is not even comparable to high end PCs whether you like to game on PCs or not is irrelevant, factually and objectively PCs are better than the PS3 even when you take price into consideration.
And with that I am done with the conversation.

Bottom line is a 250$ console is an illusion, you need to spend at least 200 bucks on a good TV, money on HDMI cables and if your online you will want a mic. Your 250$ console ends up costing bare minimum if you want it to look good 400-500 bucks. Then you need to buy games for it which is another 10-60 bucks, this is excluding any extra controllers you might want.
For 500 or 600 bucks you can buy a PC that outperforms it if just barely. Not to mention all your games from your old PC will likely still work, plus the crazy amount of decent Free to play games on the market.
In fact I have done searches and people are building gaming towers, so this excludes the monitor keyboard and mouse, for 250-300 dollars and they can run Crysis and it looks better than on the PS3, so what can a 250$ PC do? Quite a bit actually.
But as you have clearly stated you don't care even though my points are as logical as they can be, and just have a burning hatred for PCs for a reason that I'm sure no one but you understands.

I'm not saying it is certainly from a PC, but it looks nothing special compared to a lot of games from it. Plus, a lot of PS3/360 games can be touched up to look as good as this.
Look at it this way:
Would Rockstar release images from a console that isn't coming out (let alone announced) in at least a whole year?
That doesn't sound as reasonable as these images coming from a PC or touched up console pics. Plus, nothing indicates that these are in-game footages either, nor that they're graphical representation of the game. Until we see things in motion, like the first GTAV trailer (which looked nothing like this btw), we can only assume it's touched up pics or PC if in-game.
