Devil May Cry Fans On DMC Reboot: More Hyped Than Pissed
When the revamped Dante for Ninja Theory's DMC - a Devil May Cry reboot - was unveiled, the fans sorta lost it.
They just didn't like the younger, heroine-addict-looking hero, who seemed more like a bratty, cocky punk than a cool, confident bad-ass. This resulted in quite the backlash, perhaps culminating in Ninja Theory developers receiving death threats...which is way beyond the limits of a rational protest.
But the studio first reminded everyone that it had been Capcom's idea to remake the popular hero for a Western audience, and the publisher approved the developer's new design. Ninja Theory also kept telling fans to "wait until they play it," or at least see some gameplay. And now that we've seen lots of footage, the bitterness seems to have abated and the majority are more excited than annoyed.
In speaking to VG24/7, Capcom US producer Alex Jones talked about the fans calming down:
Yeah, now it’s fine, but I could have done without having to fear for my life [laughs]. There was always going to be people who saw new Dante and who didn’t want it, and that’s fine. We understand – I understand – that people are passionate about it, so this isn’t a bad thing.
Being angry about it – yeah I get that – but we always said, ‘when you see the game and you play it, trust me, you’re going to understand that we were doing the right thing’. Now that’s happening, so yeah it’s vindication, but it’s not like smugly sitting back and going ‘ha ha’.
It’s more like, ‘We understand why you guys had doubts, and we knew that we had to prove this to you, and we were happy to do it.’ That was our responsibility."
Yeah, I didn't like Dante's new look, either, but the gameplay does appear to be downright awesome. And in the end, isn't that what our gaming entertainment is all about?

I think this one looks pretty decent. I just hope they have a good variety of weapons...and amongst those, fist weapons. I loved the gauntlets in DMC3

Also it was a good idea for them to reveal the new Dante long before the release of the game. It gives the horde plenty of time to calm down. If they showed the new guy and then released the game a few months later it wouldn't sell too well.

I'd argue God of War and Metal Gear are on the same path.

As far as I can tell this just looks better than anything I've seen DMC do in the past. Also, the art direction is extremely strong, may even get "best artistic design" for next year.
I'm thinking it'll be ninja Theory's best game yet.

but all of this is ultimately to be more deadly. more capable of killing your opponent who may be just as deadly.
but the purpose of juggles in DMC and Bayonetta are less focused on this.
DMC and Bayonetta are alike in that tons of moves are dropped in a melting pot of abilities. They're dropped in there not necessarily to tactically be more effective, but to vary your onslaught to multiply out a Style meter that nets you more points, or orbs, or rings, or whatever. It's a different focus.
I suppose this just concerns those who really "get into" the game play. If you're just mashing buttons to see the show and have fun with easy stimuli, it can be great. That's probably how I'll approach DmC =)

I know it's tough to change the appearance of a major character and it's been done to literal death in movies. For instance a black Kingpin in Daredevil, black Nick Fury and a white Terry Fitzgerald in Spawn. But if you can look past it I think NT is going to nail this one. Both HS and EOTTW were very, very good games. Their stories were very cool and enthralling.

Yeah, the art direction is awesome and I know that Ninja Theory are excellent story-tellers, but...
What I've heard of the soundtrack, I don't really like and while the gameplay looks pretty cool, until I know for myself how it plays, I'll still hold on to my skepticism.
I appreciate what Ninja Theory is doing, but their games aren't exactly known for their awesome, in-depth gameplay...which I believe was always the heart and soul of DMC.
Probably won't be a day-1 purchase, as I haven't been fully convinced, but I'll get it eventually.

I'm getting it, but I wouldn't call myself a DMC die-hard. More an NT die-hard :)

ok you knew the sh*t would hit the fan, so why did you do it?
i REALLY cant understand these guys!
i mean $E i can put up with because they refuse to understand what their doing to their franchises!
but crapcom comes out and in plain daylight admits to it, yet they keep doing it!
i dont get it, they want to go bankrupt do they?
or are they really that naive and stupid that they believe these actions will bring in more newer fans that will outweigh the old pissed off ones?

Doesn't look bad though. Just not as good as Devil May Cry 3, 4, or Bayonetta. 30fps on the Unreal Engine really ruined it for me.
Still, could be fun. I'll rent it someday.
