Hey, Since When Is Final Fantasy Versus XIII "Nostalgic?"

Now I'm all confused.

The game is taking eons to complete and at this point, nobody would be surprised to hear that it's coming to next-generation platforms. For a while there, we thought it was flat-out canceled.

But Square Enix still swears Final Fantasy Versus XIII is coming, and they keep giving us these little complimentary updates that don't really mean anything. But the latest might give you pause: Speaking at the ongoing FF 25th anniversary event in Tokyo, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada had an interesting comment:

"When it reaches the level where it gives you that nostalgic, 'this is Final Fantasy!' feeling, I want to show it to everyone."

We all saw a quick snippet of gameplay some time ago, which featured a real-time swords-flashing encounter and a large, apparently open-ended world map. Now, either the game has changed drastically since then, or there's a missed translation here. Or, and I suppose this is just as possible, Square Enix has just completely lost sight of what FF used to be and have actually forgotten how these games used to play. Because that statement really doesn't make any sense to long-time series fans who saw that footage. We didn't go, "Yep, that's Final Fantasy!"

I wonder if all the head honchos at FF have just totally cracked up.

Maybe it's not the battle system that they're talking about, but all of the other things. Y'know, characters, environment, story details. Maybe it's the soul to which he refers. I mean... games have souls. That's how we know that Resistance: Burning Skies isn't Resistance and why many think that FFXIII isn't FF. There's intangibles in play.

P.S. Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII was just announced. Seems like an even further deviation from what you guys regard as traditional FF, I think.

Lol! To me this is an admission that under his leadership, Square has destroyed Final Fantasy. I really hope this game is worth the wait.

Wada is to Final Fantasy as Hitler was to the Sudetenland.

And basically, this game is no where finish? If the game doesn't have that "feeling" yet. then when will it ever?

I think either they have cracked up or Lawless is correct. I'm hoping for the latter.

Even in FFXIII after all the destruction they wrought there were still a handful of scenes that showed there was still a Final Fantasy soul flickering behind that hot mess that brought on a twinge of nostalgia. XIII-2 didn't even manage a flicker. Maybe they know that.

If they are aiming at re-establishing that familiar deep feeling, even if not due to classic gameplay, then I think there's hope this game is headed in the right direction philosophically.

Yeah FFvs13 will be nostalgic in that "Oh man remember that one game that was being made? Man..that would have changed gaming forever" type of nostalgia then yes, it will be.

Ugh, I said this in the other article but seriously. FF13 didn't give anyone that nostalgia, yet 2 sequels get made.

This game nostalgia or not made me incredibly interested in the world and characters and most importantly the awesome looking battle system. I loved Kingdom Hearts and this sparked nostalgia for that if anything.

So again remind me why they want this to remind us of Final fantasy games of old, when the next FF13 game is going to be an action RPG?

Square is hands down the most retarded company I have ever witnessed.

Nostalgia? I remember the last generation FFX, FFXII yes I feel nostalgia for those titles. When the new generation kicks in, FFXIII and it's ugly brood will not even be an afterthought.

So they're not giving a release date at the 25th Anniversary... Well that's even drawn my straw short. Any new of Type-0, The PSP we never got!

I`d say, "THIS IS WHAT FF13 SUPPOSED TO BE!" They should just rename it to 15...

They're probably talking about how the airships, chocobos, and world map is set up; the game itself.

Well perhaps you just misinterpreted. Or not. Look, I get exactly what he meant.

The sense that it's FF not that it's actually going to remind you of any other FF.

The element of FF recognition is going to be there, man.
