Is Sony Planning Any Shocking Announcements For TGS 2012?

The Tokyo Game Show is this month and everyone is wondering if we'll see any super huge surprises.

Perhaps the most common question is whether or not Sony will show off the PlayStation 4. That seems exceedingly unlikely simply based on various company statements throughout 2012 but you never know, maybe they've just been playing possum this whole time. But beyond a PS4 unveiling, what else might Sony do to shock the crowd?

It's obvious that Gamescom was all about the Vita, as the portable enjoyed quite the monster showing. New software, PS3/Vita cross-platform compatibility, the firmware update that would deliver PS1 classics, etc. However, there was no mention of a price drop, which is the one thing consumers really seem to want. Although Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida has been quoted as saying it's still too early for a price cut, Vita sales have been lagging, so... But beyond that, it seems like Sony tackled the majority of new Vita news at Gamescom.

That mostly leaves the PS3, so perhaps we should look out for the following: A finalized release date for The Last Of Us, a PS3 price drop for the holidays (or a few bundle packages), and perhaps the unveiling of a next-gen project of some kind, without specifically mentioning any PS4 details. With so many developers apparently working on next-gen projects, it's going to be harder and harder to keep those games under wraps, especially when huge shows like TGS come around. So what do you think we'll see in a few weeks time?

I'd like to see games that appeal to me for vita because the focus seems to be fps. Maybe a glimpse at GTA V since R said more to come in a few weeks. Id love to see more on Beyond Two Souls because I was blown away by the gamescom gameplay footage. I dont see them announcing the PS4 yet maybe E3. I would love high quality jrpg!

I think devs were so stoked to have two thumbsticks on a portable they just went nuts with FPS.

... Or it could simply be because that's what they thought most gamers would want. There are quite a few who claim we only want to play shooters these days... However wrong that might be.

Beamboom, the evidence of game sales would seem to strongly suggest that anyone suggesting that the majority of gamers (in the West) want to play shooters - is correct.

On our consoles/PCs, yes, shooters are big. But not on portable platforms.

It is a major mistake - one that goes against *everything* we today know about mobile gaming.

I'm confused, haven't you promoted the use of tablets and smartphones as gaming devices specifically mentioning shooters? I'm not sure, it might have been another poster but my memory is telling me you've pushed tables/smartphones as viable for shooters.

Do they make major announcement about Western games like The Last of Us at TGS?

Also, I never used to follow console launches, don't they normally get announced at E3?

I was looking forward to TGS when I thought Versus and Last Guardian might show but that doesn't seem likely. I bet we get some lame footage of Lightning Returns though.

Im still hoping Versus and Last Guardian show because it wouldn't be a surprise if they tell us before hand! Im not upset about Lightning Returns like everyone else here so Im really interested in seeing a trailer I hate when a developer annouces a game and shows very little. Im still miffed at Rockstar about only giving us logo with Agent.

I think Rockstar won't attend game conventions just to avoid questions about Agent. They will never live down letting Sony announce a game they aren't making.

I'm thinking Sony will show the Vita some love. Much more than it received at E3 this year. Maybe some new games, apps, or price drops/bundles.

I won't rule out a PS4 unveil. But I'd imagine Sony would choose an event that housed a lot more journalists from across the globe to really send the message out that, YES, THIS IS PS4. But I dunno. I also think they'll want another strong focus with Vita. I wouldn't be surprised if all things PS4 are kept under wraps until E3. Idunno.

I love my PS3 and I think it has plenty of life left but I would love to see Sony's next console (PS4). I don't think anyone can complain about more powerful hardware coming, especially if it has backwards compatibility. I'm really hoping that PS4 will allow for all games to be able to run at at least 30FPS at 1080p. Since the PS3 was unveiled at E3 in 2005, I can only assume that E3 will also be the unveiling of PS4. I think E3 probably has the most media coverage out of all the events that it may be unveiled at but who knows. Either way, I think TGS will be another great event for Sony. They seem to be on a roll lately :)

Hopefully the latest showing of The Last Guardian and perhaps a couple of games from their Japanese studio (a new Siren?), but if there's anything it'll almost certainly be for Vita or third party. Their first party studios, at this point, are gearing up for the next generation, so unless they show up with the PS4, which I highly doubt, though wouldn't put outside the realms of possibility, it'll be a pretty dull showing methinks.

If they do announce the PS4, it will be overkill for MS. MS has almost zero chance of showing up at TGS, especially after they were MIA at Gamescom. TGS is Sony's homecourt, so any big surprises or unveiling from them should take place at the event.

i doubt will see any big announcements for TGS, maybe a new game or 2, for ps3 hopefully, but nothing too big or surprising.
i hope $ony FINALLY announces a new ape escape game, well not announces but actually talks about the god dam one they have had announced for 2 years god dam years!
they announced it when they announced the crappy mini game move spin off at E3, but they have not said boo about the game, a proper new ape escape game since!
hope that does not mean its canned, come on its ape escape, one of playstations most beloved franchises, and one of the VERY few franchises that is STILL exclusive to playstation!
if theres ONE game out there that deserves a revival its APE ESCAPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

in all seriousness though dont expect anything too big to be shown at TGS.
im hoping will see some news for the last guardian, FFVXIII, and a release date for the last of us would be nice but besides that im not expecting too much.

Ape Escape would translate perfectly to the Vita (dual sticks!). Plus, they could implement some new mechanics using the Vita that would fit the franchise well.

Will keep a close eye on the announcements. Will be very interesting indeed. I think a PS4 announcement specifically though, is premature at this point. If they do announce it though, I would be very surprised indeed...

I'm hoping for the new slim PS3 announcement, and corresponding price drop. My laser is shot and I need a new PS3, but I've been putting it off for months anticipating a price drop/new model.

Some new Vita game announcements would be great too. And in the realm of wishful thinking: Vita-PS3 remote play upgrade!!!

How about Superslim PS3, two tier, one with HDD, and one with 16GB of flash/SDD. $199 for the HDD model and $149 for the flash based model. Both with the same standard SATA upgradeable drive bay.

Vita price drop pre-announced with a SuperSlim PS3 + Vita bundle costing $399, for the flash based Superslim PS3 plus a Vita with a 16GB flash card. Tell me that would not be an attractive bundle this holiday season....

Throw in complete PS1 classic support instead of this ludicrous drip feed approach, working remote play and applets like an alarm clock for my Vita.

Sprinkle in some game releases and I'm happy.

I can see new bundles being announced not a new system at this time, price drop for christmas possibly,hoping they announce cool stuff for the Vita really want one but nothing except for uncharted shouts out to me. whatever Sony has planning it'll be good they always announce more here than E3

MHF on the Vita and PS3 with cross-play to PC players would be sweeeeet. Hell I'd take just a regular MH for the PS3 and Vita. Either way I have a feeling that when a Vita MH is announced so to will a PS3 MH be finally announced as well.

A decent PS3 price drop (like the one Highlander highlighted) would do wonders for Sony this holiday season. A PS3/Vita bundle $400 or less would be a great way for Sony to get both their systems in one household. I would be shocked if they did that though. A regular PS3 price drop seems more likely.

I'm not holding my breath for The Last Guardian. If that somehow is shown off I'll be estatic but it seems highly unlikely.

Other than that I'd love to see 1 or 2 PS3/Vita reveals, and a concrete launch date for The Last of Us. If it some how gets released before Fall 2013 I'll pee/poop myself!

Here's a bit of news that may or may not cheer your heart. Patrick Seybold of SCEA has departed for a somewhat more limited role with a company called Tapjoy. If Seybold is the man behind SCEA's recently spineless performance with regard to PS3 marketing and simple things like selling PS3s in colored casings, or not even publishing games owned and co-developed by Sony, then his departure can't be anything but good news.

Saw that. No way I would buy a new Xbox anywhere within it's "launch period" (if at all) after the 360.

That rumor also would line up nicely with what Ben posted the other day about how 1 system will release in 2013, and the other delayed until 2014. Could the PS4 come first?

Add that to the new focus of Xbox being to grab all entertainment and not deal much with gaming and I could see MS getting killed next generation.

Think about it, they are focusing on owning the living room, ignoring 1st party game advancement, and their hardware is liable to be shoddy again. I don't just base this on the new processor issues but the fact that this thing looks to have a handful of different processors in it and as we learned many times before the more processors you have the more there is to go wrong as they communicate.

But I really hope they show off some cool new Vita stuff this year. A price drop is my biggest item on my wish list.

Have you not seen Assassin's Creed III: Liberation yet? It looks amazing for a portable game.

I want to see a couple more surprise heavy-hitter AAA titles announced at TGS for Sony. Other than that anything short of an inFamous 3 announcement, more GTA V info, or the announcement of the PS4 will be disappointing for me. And while it would be nice if it doesn't affect the price, the PS4 being backwards compatible isn't necessary, that's what I have 2 PS3's and 2 PS2's for.
