Wonderbook Behind The Scenes: Using Advanced EyePet Tech

Sony's new Wonderbook is innovative and ambitious, and it seeks to bring tidings of cheer to many this holiday season.

In a new behind-the-scenes video, London Studio talks about how Wonderbook came about, starting with the fact that the original concept began early on this generation when Sony's augmented reality tech ad resulted in two ideas. One of those ideas was a virtual pet, the other was a virtual book.

Obviously, they first went with the pet idea; you all may remember the EyePet, which only required tracking one marker at a time. But EyePet did pretty well so the publishers opted to try the second idea, too, which is more complicated but also offers more in the way of options and choices. It should be no surprise to learn that Wonderbook uses advanced EyePet technology; the cool part is that even if markers are blocked from view, like when we turn a page, the tech should still work.

Plus, they wanted to implement PlayStation Move functionality for their Book of Spells idea, because the Move wand looks like...well, a wand. The result is something that imaginative and creative kids might really enjoy, and we're interested to give it a try as well.

I wonder if Sony is confident enough to market this as much as Microsoft does with their Kinect.

Lol, just kidding. There's no way on Earth anyone can match Microsoft's marketing for Kinect.

I'm surprised the PSeye is still relevant enough for this kind of stuff. Still, it needs a major update. It definitely needs to be hd for the PS4.

Woulda been cool when I was a youth. So, how long until the Japanese make games that show hot women riding you while you lay in front of your tv? lol.

There is just something that doesn't sit right with me about having to look through a TV monitor to enjoy a book that is in front of you. I just wouldn't be able to get over holding bland digital book in front of me... It's like how I do not enjoy touch screens in games as a finger in front of the screen breaks the immersion.

EyePet wasn't a real pet, but my nieces and nephews adored the heck out of it. I bet kids will really go for this in the same way.

Yep, this looks great for the kids! I will be buying this as one of my son's Christmas gifts. Also, The Walking With Dinosaurs will be amazing for my son. I may get into this with the Diggs Detective game, not sure but we'll see what type of game it is.

Yeah, that is a good deal for sure. Thankfully I bought move a while back. I am also looking forward to some Sports Champions 2! I hope they really nail the game play.
