Visceral: Screw AAA, We Want "Quad-A" For Dead Space 3

We've all heard of the "AAA" label before.

But that's not good enough for developer Visceral Games, as the team seeks to bring their critically acclaimed Dead Space franchise into another stratosphere of quality. In fact, they want it to be so good, they want it to be called "quad-A." ...oh, but that sounds a little silly.

In speaking to CVG, Dead Space 3 executive producer Steve Papoutsis says they want to excel and go "above and beyond" what they considered to be a "AAA sequel" (we'll agree with that, for the most part). Said Papoutsis:

"A lot of people say ‘triple-A’ and that’s kind of become the norm, with all the ‘big triple-A games’ yadda yadda. No. We want to go beyond triple-A. We want to push to the next level. We’ve taken up just saying ‘quad-A’ all day."

Well, you gotta love the ambition, right? Obviously, "AAA" can be subjective just like anything else but for me, I consider a game to qualify as AAA when it breaks the 9 plateau in scoring. Now, as Dead Space 2 netted exactly the requisite score, I'd say fine, call it AAA. But "quad-A?" Come on. Maybe only Grand Theft Auto V or The Last Of Us has a shot at that.

But hey, Dead Space 3 should totally rock. It's scheduled to arrive on store shelves in February.

I'm pretty sure AAA just means the level of development. In the industry I think AAA just means a big budget game. Like, Enslaved and Uncharted 3 are both AAA games, even though Uncharted is way more polished. I don't think it has anything to do with quality of the game. That being said, saying you're going to make a AAAA game is almost like saying that you are on a whole new level of being a developer, and is imo an insult to other game makers. And now that they've said Quad-A, they really better deliver or they're really gonna get it from the critics.

Every gen they will add an "A" to the quality of games. In 20 years devs will be saying "This game is AAAAAAAA to the power of 2 divided by how many people think these letters are stupid! Wait everyone thinks these letters are stupid, so it makes our game only AAA ;("

I love the energy at Visceral, there are some great behind the scenes videos on the Dante's Inferno disc, but the direction of Dead Space isn't for me. If it got lonelier, darker, scarier, and more horrifying then we could talk quad-A.

That's the thing. You can have all the ambition you want but if the direction of the series veers off path into something unrecognizable (and not wanted), then the ambition doesn't amount to much.

Speaking of, I still do hope for a Dante's Inferno 2 one day as well! I really enjoyed the first one. Well, the first half of it anyways (and bits of the second half).

Dead Space 2 was brillant! I was worried that it would sacrifice scares for more action, but it didn't! It was still just as scary, if not scarier, than the first one.

I trust Visceral will make an incredible game. I just hope the new co-op design won't affect the scare factor.

And I also hope EA don't nickel and dime gamers with DLC, codes, Facebook integration and forced online multiplayer to progress in the single player campaign. KEEP THEM SEPARATE!! It's not hard to keep Single player stories separate from multiplayer modes. That way both types of gamer will be happy!!

Can't wait for DS3. I've become a huge fan of the franchise since before the first game came out thanks to the comics. I've been trying to absorb as much as I can from the books all-the-way to the movies. The only thing I haven't had the opportunity to play is the iOS/Android game which I hope gets a port to the PS Vita or makes it to PS Mobile so I can still play it on the Vita.

... Quad-A?

So now they want to add more letters when they aren't necessary, only made all the more bonkers by the fact that a 'standard' game scores a 7. I don't know.
