Grand Theft Auto III Might Become A PS2 Classic Next Week

It was one of the many "holy sh** this is amazing!" games of 2001 and soon, it might return to the PlayStation universe in digital form.

More and more great PS2 classics are making their way to the Network, and one of the most anticipated is Grand Theft Auto III, the game that pissed off parents and wowed critics and gamers.

The only problem is that a series of complications caused GTAIII to miss its debut as a PS2 classic, so we're all waiting to see when it will finally arrive. Thankfully, if the information found at Sony's Asia.PlayStation site (as noted by Joystiq) is accurate, we don't have long to wait: GTAIII might hit on September 25, which is a week from today. And that's when the PSN is usually updated, so...

The first delay was due to a licensing problem with the soundtrack (no big shock there) but it seems they've gotten past that. I just wonder if, due to the game's admittedly old-fashioned nature, it will appeal to younger gamers, or just those who loved the game when it came out nearly 11 years ago. ...yes, it was that long ago.

I bought this game for my Xperia Play. Runs surprisingly well considering it's on a phone. I also own it on my PC (one of the few games it can actually run.) If it wasn't for that, I would totally be buying it on the network. I spent so much time with this game in high school.

I spent so much time with this game in elementary school. Yeah my parents knew what this game was about, but they still bought it for me. Needless to say all my friends loved hanging out at my house just to play this game. Good times......

It's definitely a classic, though I wouldn't say it holds up well.

Blegh. I still don't know why Rockstar went the PS2 Classics route. Give us an HD Collection, guys!

Considering how popular this series is, you could've easily sold 2 million copies. I would've dropped $40 day 1 for it.

Would've been better than hooking up my PS2 to play these games again.

Speaking of PS2 classics....

I'm wondering if Xenosaga might be due for some love. The Volks company in Japan makes 60 cm character dolls from all sorts of sources. They also make resin figures - such as the hideously expensive 1/4 scale KOS-MOS. The reason I mention them is that Volks has announced a Xenosaga III dollfie (60cm) project that will likely include more than one character. The conjecture is either KOS-MOS and Shion or KOS-MOS and T-Elos. Either way, when Volks does these limited themes it's normally because the rights holder has some other project coming up. For example, when Fate Extra was being released as a game, plus anime, they announced a new Saber to coincide. So, one wonders whether there might be a re-release to PSN for Xenosaga, or perhaps even an HD reworking - though I think the PSN release is more likely...

Here's a link to the catalog from Volks that someone posted at the Namco forum;

Still have this gem for my PS2, but yah it would be better if it had HD makeover especially for the newcomers who started out with GTA4.

They should have GTA 1 and 2 for ps1 classics to play on vita I know you can play them for free on PC but still would love to play them both on a handheld platform

I would have really considered it if they released an HD collection of GTAIII and Vice City, maybe Vice City and Liberty City Stories as an even better package, but I'm going to pass since it's just the same game I've got sitting in the other room.
