Sony: We Don't Make Decisions Based On Our Competitors

We told you yesterday that Sony appears to be leading with their hardware foot forward going into this holiday season. Not a bad idea.

But with a cheaper Xbox 360 unit and the new Wii U looming on the horizon for the fourth quarter of 2012, is Sony at all worried about their position? GameSpot asked PlayStation VP of hardware marketing John Koller about the PS3's position:

"We are increasingly bullish on the PS3's prospects not only this year but over the next few years. I think when you look at the types of content coming to the PS3, the consumer coming in… through the 250GB Uncharted 3 bundle or…through the Assassins' Creed III 500GB model, they're getting unique content. That consumer that comes in through those avenues is going to be opened up to probably the most rich and deep gaming opportunities in the sector. When you look at what's coming to the PS3, not only this holiday, but what's coming next year…[there are] games like [Beyond: Two Souls], games like The Last of Us…a lot of third-party content coming, and a lot of first-party content that hasn't come out publicly.

A lot of great content is coming. And over the next 2-3 years, the PS3 has got an incredible lineup. That consumer coming in this fall is going to really have an opportunity to have great content and what we believe to be the best content in the industry. Yeah, we watch what the competitors do, but we don't make decisions based on what they do. We like our position."

Koller added that Sony will continue to support the PS3 for the 2-3 years; essentially, "as long as there is a development spigot that's running hot." As for right now, he says that spigot is "very hot" and they expect the PS3 to do what the PS2 did: Stick around for a while like an "old warrior." You can also bet that Sony fans are happy to hear that part about not always bowing to competitor pressure..."we don't make decisions based on what they do."

Gotta love that.

Love it. Sony's about fair competition and not about bribing and cheating to win. Same with nintendo. I really respect that.

Sony's got style!

The one thing I'd like to see Sony do to get a ton more of revenue, is to give us colors, & to skin their PS3 & Vita bundles.

I think the AC3 bundle would look great with a "outfitted Conner", or at least the AC's "A" symbol skinned across the PS3.

Or at least make it all white to separate it from a regular stand-alone console.

awesome. yah, I think SOny's identity and quality of content just doesn't need to concern itself all that much with the MS and Nintendo crowd. While Nintendo is pushing tablet controllers and MS is hiring CBS executives, Sony is keeping AAA produced content at the fore. They don't need to be cheaper. They don't need to be more mainstream. They need to be who they are and have been. I like that consistency about them. Coming from a fan of the original Xbox and the first 2-3 years of 360, I can flat out attest to MS changing up their values on a dime and cold dropping them to chase more mainstream pastures.

Something tells me we won't see a PS4 until 4K resolution Ultra HDTVs become more widely available.

There are still many people who haven't even adopted 1080p HD!!

So long as the PS4 has games I wanna play (and, if I'm lucky, can play all my PS3 disc and digital games) I will get one.

Sony is a bad ass. Haha, "and a lot of first-party content that hasn't come out publicly". Very Very Nice! By the way the president of Sony's Worldwide Studios for SCE, Shuhei Yoshida,
thinks Wii U as a gigantic DS. Gotta love that. Haha.

Huh... maybe they're going to wait longer than we expect to announce/launch a new PS. I've said in the past that it'll be cool to wait until 2015, but it'd also be a VERY ballsy proposition, especially considering it seems as though many of their first party studios are in the process of creating new IPs for the next gen already (seems, not confirmed).

Lawless, if (stress *if*) Sony waited to 2015, I think they'd need to have a mainstrean PS3 priced at $199 or less to do it. Let's face it, the WiiU isn't really a step forward past PS3 or 360, and whatever the 'next' box will be, it won't push graphics past current HD standards which is right where the PS3 and WiiU will be. So you have a $199 PS3 with HD graphics, 3D BluRay and a great game library competing against an unknown $400-$500 console with HD graphics, 3D, BluRay maybe, and a small library of games. With no significant advantage over PS3, NextBox will initially only sell well to Xhobx360 exclusive fans. Sony could wait, but as you say, it's a risk.

By your logic Sony should've made PSABR years ago.

I fully respect Sony's stance on the competition, but don't necessarily agree with it. Your competition SHOULD affect how you run your business. The bundles that Sony are offering provide an awesome value, no doubt. However, if you're looking to increase sales of the casual gamer, price points are incredibly important. There is still a $70 difference between the cheapest Xbox 360 and PS3. That is pretty significant.

I do like that they will support the system for another 3 years though. There is no doubt the PS4 is 1-2 years away so that is something I truly believe Sony does a great job with as compared to Microsoft.

The cheapest 360 has no HDD, even casual gamers know the difference. Compare like with like.

I think you're giving the casual gamer way too much credit. Even if they do know the difference, having a harddrive may not even matter to them.

PS3 will ultimately outsell the Wii, it's already outsold the 360. Who won this generation again?

That honestly is the way to run a business right there.

Sure you'll have competitors - but you can't have fun doing your business if you trying and play someone else's game and just follow along.
