Sony: We Don't Make Decisions Based On Our Competitors
We told you yesterday that Sony appears to be leading with their hardware foot forward going into this holiday season. Not a bad idea.
But with a cheaper Xbox 360 unit and the new Wii U looming on the horizon for the fourth quarter of 2012, is Sony at all worried about their position? GameSpot asked PlayStation VP of hardware marketing John Koller about the PS3's position:
"We are increasingly bullish on the PS3's prospects not only this year but over the next few years. I think when you look at the types of content coming to the PS3, the consumer coming in… through the 250GB Uncharted 3 bundle or…through the Assassins' Creed III 500GB model, they're getting unique content. That consumer that comes in through those avenues is going to be opened up to probably the most rich and deep gaming opportunities in the sector. When you look at what's coming to the PS3, not only this holiday, but what's coming next year…[there are] games like [Beyond: Two Souls], games like The Last of Us…a lot of third-party content coming, and a lot of first-party content that hasn't come out publicly.
A lot of great content is coming. And over the next 2-3 years, the PS3 has got an incredible lineup. That consumer coming in this fall is going to really have an opportunity to have great content and what we believe to be the best content in the industry. Yeah, we watch what the competitors do, but we don't make decisions based on what they do. We like our position."
Koller added that Sony will continue to support the PS3 for the 2-3 years; essentially, "as long as there is a development spigot that's running hot." As for right now, he says that spigot is "very hot" and they expect the PS3 to do what the PS2 did: Stick around for a while like an "old warrior." You can also bet that Sony fans are happy to hear that part about not always bowing to competitor pressure..."we don't make decisions based on what they do."
Gotta love that.

The one thing I'd like to see Sony do to get a ton more of revenue, is to give us colors, & to skin their PS3 & Vita bundles.
I think the AC3 bundle would look great with a "outfitted Conner", or at least the AC's "A" symbol skinned across the PS3.
Or at least make it all white to separate it from a regular stand-alone console.

I do like that they will support the system for another 3 years though. There is no doubt the PS4 is 1-2 years away so that is something I truly believe Sony does a great job with as compared to Microsoft.
