PSXE Poll Update: Wii U Just Isn't Doing It For Gamers

Yes, I'm aware that we are a PlayStation-oriented website.

But gamers are gamers and if you're like me, you'll play anything you like, regardless of the platform or hardware. However, the Wii U just hasn't done it for me, and it seems most of you agree.

The results of the latest poll aren't ambiguous in the slightest: The vast majority say Nintendo's new machine doesn't interest them in the slightest and only a very small percentage are sold on it. We're willing to bet it's not going over as well as the Wii, although the launch lineup doesn't look too bad. Besides, just to be optimistic about the whole thing, we finally get the timeless mascots of this industry in high definition. That's great. So even though I see it as just another gimmick, at the very least, Mario will shine.

This week, we're talking about another piece of hardware. It's Sony's new trilogy of PS3 consoles, which are a little lighter and smaller, and boast a new disc drive. Two of them also feature much larger hard drives; 500GB and 250GB will replace the 320GB and 160GB models. So what do you think of 'em? Gonna get one?

Im not surprised. A friend of mine is a huge Nintendo guy, is not happy about the new controller. Now this is coming from someone who loved the stupid wiimote and the wii.

I'm really not interested in the Wii U. I was expecting Nintendo's new console to be a little better than what they've shown.

My slim PS3 is still doing what it's supposed to, so I won't be picking up the new slimmer version. It does look better in my opinion, but it would be an unnecessary purchase for me.

It's an interesting launch date they set for the Wii U, right in the middle of all these other great titles that majority probably already preordered on their respective consoles.

While Nintendo seems happy to have Bayonetta 2 as an exclusive, I wouldn't be surprised to see it go the same way as Resident Evil 4 did in being ported later on. Maybe onto the PS4? :)

As for the new slims, I'm still with the first slim model, so no problems and unless they somehow implement PS2 compatibility in the new ones, I'll just continue saving up for my next interest.

The new ones are the same as the old ones internally, the major differences being the BD player, casing and possibly the HSF. But the chipset appears to be the same as what's in the original slims - based on the power numbers at least. No one has done a tear down yet.

If I had any money, I wouldn't mind getting a Wii-U. Hell, anything's better than that damned Wimote than I couldn't get dialed in so I wasn't spinning around in in-game circles.

But I have to say that if I did have any money to spend, I'd first have to go re-buy another Vita to replace the one I had sent back to GameStop.

As far as the new Super Slim PS3's go, I like the new look & I'd like to have one if I had the extra money, but I'm not too keen on it's new cheese grater effect, just cause I think that's going to become a dust magnet no matter how clean you keep house, & a biatch to clean all those extra little un-needed ridges & valleys.

Anyways, I still have my now 1T Slim & my now 750 phat 60, so I'm still good to go.

"Wii U just isn't doing it for gamers"

I'd say this is too broad. It's doing it for enough gamers that every store I've tried has run out of preorders. From what I have read most retailers across the nation are out.

I wonder what the total preorders thus far are? I understand controlling the demand. No one wants to flood the market. Underselling also drives up cost of manufacturing. Again, preorder numbers, quantities, not percentages, will give us a better idea of what is going on. Myself, I'd wait for the feedback of people who have already started playing released games, seeing how my work laptop offers greater gaming performance, graphics, tech, etc, so I can wait.

Oh they ALL constrain orders to measure demand! If they didn't, I would never have made 3 grand on the PS3 preorder I sold! People did the same with 360 preorders. We all know neither were ACTUALLY constrained. Heck, the EB I preordered my PS3 from had 5 pre-orders, and that was IT. The line up over night had 14. I was number 1. YUS!

I remember national news saying the demand at Christmas for the new system would not be met. But as it turned out... there were plenty. 360 was the same. And so was the Wii. It's the easiest way to measure demand without paying a lot for market research.

I -guarantee- when 720, wiiU, and PS4 are set to hit, we're all gonna read headlines about how there won't be enough. Then there will be enough afterall the weekend before release. Guarantee it.

TBH by fact it is hard not to agree with Jawknee on this one. The correct way to say it, "Wii U just isn't doing it for PSX members." PSX members =/= entire game community nor even half of the core audience.

I don't think Nintendo has much to worry about. Isn't there market capital worth more than all of Sony? I know this doesn't reflect necessarily the number of "gamers," but it would seem Sony would sooner collapse and die before Nintendo would. I would also imagine that any Wii U pre-order taking place right now is from the more hardcore "gamer" segment.

It is probably why the black wii u sold out quicker than the white ones. I doubt a casual gamer could tell the difference besides the price tag, it comes with a game, and it is a different color. The core gamers were going for a higher internal memory.

I'm very curious to find out if Nintendo has really cut out its own market or if the Wii was a best-selling fluke. I mean the family friendly market is there but are they going to keep it up? You really can't tell just because of early shortages and pre-release hype.

I personally can't wait until the Nintendo Wii U releases. As a fan of the 'original' video game industry, Nintendo is among the only developers / companies that still sticks with the original tradition of creating fun and new gameplay experiences. Although Sony tends to do stuff slightly different as well, they aren't even on the same creative level as Nintendo. (Microsoft isn't even in the same league, although I did enjoy their attempt at creating mo-cap gaming with Kinect)

I must admit, though, I'm not entirely certain about the Wii U. Sure, it looks interesting, and I can't wait to see just how many new ways the console lets me interact with my games. It does seem like a rather 'risky' move for Nintendo to make, even more so than the original Wii. Back when the Wii came out, no one expected motion gaming to take off. Nintendo literally changed the gaming industry as a whole. However, both Sony and Microsoft have the capabilities to introduce their own new gaming technologies, such as a form of augmented reality, and thanks to the Wii, they also share the same vision, which is to create fun new experiences.

Quite simply, the Wii caught the industry by surprise. However, that surprise is now an expectation. The question is, will Nintendo truly reinvent the gaming industry again, or will the next Sony and Microsoft machines simply outmatch the Wii at its' own game?

Now, regarding this article.
The Nintendo Wii U is in direct competition with the PlayStation franchise, and being as how this is a PlayStation fan-website, obviously most users visiting a PlayStation website will be loyal to the PlayStation brand. This poll doesn't prove anything.

It's like, if you go to a cat convention and ask every cat owner if they have any kind of interest in having a dog, a very high percentage of them would say no.

Or, for the nerds out there, if you go to a Star Trek convention and ask every attendee if they like Star Wars, a very high percentage of them would say no, followed by some inhuman high pitched laugh.

The point? Quite simply, this poll doesn't indicate much of anything.

(had to post a new reply, as it wouldn't let me edit my old one. Sorry for two posts)

As for the whole "this is a gimmick" statement? Quite honestly, it truly isn't.
The Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo Wii U are all capable of creating entirely new gaming genres. However, the developers of this industry, and I speak from experience (being a dev myself), do not seem to be capable of thinking outside of the box.
When I look at the Nintendo 3DS, I instantly think of puzzle games. Using the 3D, it is possible to completely 'hide' certain objects from view, and Super Mario 3D Land is a fine example of what developers are capable of creating. (to see for yourself, keep the game at the title screen, and Mario will enter into a mini 'level', clearly showing how 3D could be used to alter our way of playing games)

Now, will we ever see games on the 3DS that actually take advantage of the 3D capabilities? Probably not, as quite simply, developers don't care enough to create these kinds of new experiences. However, the simple fact that the 3D can create entirely new gameplay genres, or further expand and improve upon already established genres, is the reason that the 3D is not a 'gimmick'.

As for the Wii? Well, being this late in the game, I doubt the Wii could be used to create any kind of additional genres. However, I'd still love to see a well-designed racing simulator that takes full advantage of the Wii Remote.

Now, what about the Wii U?
Although I doubt any new genres will be created on the Wii U for quite some time, it would be possible to further extend current genres, such as racing, by using the second screen as, for example, the rear-view mirror.

However, some new genres for the Wii U could use environmental objects, such as, for example, a form of augmented reality gameplay where the player would be able to take the real world around him, and transform it into a virtual gaming environment. Imagine, for a moment, having to 'scan' real world objects using the camera in a detective-style video game. Or, having the in-game character appear somewhere in your house, such as having him sit on the couch beside you. This character could then interact with real-world objects using AR technology.

That would, technically, be possible, and having the ability to use augmented reality, two screens, multiple controller options, voice control, video interaction, motion control, and the various accessories and control schemes released for the Nintendo Wii and Wii U could not only create entirely new gameplay genres, it could completely change the way we interact with our video games forever.

Gimmicks only occur if developers are idiots.

Dude, give me a freakin' break. This whole, "oh, Nintendo just makes fun games!" crap is a lame cop-out. It just gives Nintendo license to do NOTHING new.

What new experiences? Where? How have they pushed this industry in terms of gameplay? What, because of the way we move the character on the screen? With the Wii U, on a little screen hooked up to a bigger screen? How exactly does this change the fact that Mario is still Mario, Zelda is still Zelda, and the the shovelware is basically guaranteed? Do you know that the average review score for a Wii game is like a 6? If you look at the shelf of Wii games in any store, it's just layer after layer of mediocrity masquerading as "new" for the sake of the gimmick that absolutely was motion control.

The fate of the Wii has proven it's a gimmick. All successful pieces of game hardware last. They continue to sell at a steady clip throughout an era or generation. The Wii, like any FAD, shot out of the gate and then, as I predicted more than once, died a quick death. You can't give one of those things away now. The Wii U is basically taking the same approach, from what anyone can tell.

And you're insulting this site by thinking nobody will say they want the Wii U just because they like PlayStation. I hate to tell you this, but the vast majority of these readers play on multiple platforms. I know they do. They've spoken about it frequently...you might have known that if you spent more time on the actual site than just in the forums. I don't like that people who sequester themselves in the forum and who extremely infrequently visit PSXE think they can lecture this site and its users, as if they're somehow familiar.

And as for me, I'm the biggest supporter of the good ol' days. Everyone knows that, too. There is no company in the industry that has a bigger place in my heart than Nintendo. If they ever had anything even REMOTELY intriguing, I'd absolutely buy it. But it should say something that since the N64, that has never happened. They don't push the boundaries or try new things; they just alter their approach and try to stay relevant in different ways.

And that's fine. But to claim that what the Wii U does is "new?" Um...no. Just no.

I think one of the 2 only reasons it becomes a gimmick is if the developers don't utilize it. The dualshock 3 controller motion sensing is a gimmick because a vast majority of video games don't use it effectively if not at all. TBQH, it is not even sonys fault and it was such a progressive idea. While nintendos was a little more out there because we didn't have a traditional controller to go with it. Once they did added one, not that many games supported it.

Last reason, is a weird mentality in which if the team doesn't have it. Then it is just a gimmick. When NDS came out with a bottom touch screen. Sony fans felt it was just a gimmick, but now when vita adds touch screen. It is awesome? We can go on about this. I think this in itself is a trend and it goes both ways. Another thing to add. I found it weird as time went on as DS was pouring in all the awesome games and selling like crazy (hardware and software wise). When sony was announcing a new psp module which would become known as psp go. People wanted it to have a touch screen and was disappointed when it didn't. The developers on DS was able to utilize the touch screen and sometimes the built in mic to make gaming more fun.

When it was announced NG3 was going to be on the wii u. I had to change my underwear because I knew how much potential it could have. NG Dragon Sword was absolutely fun! Not only could they bring that gameplay into NG3, but also capitalize on the mistakes on the PS3/360 versions. People are now calling NG3 Razor edge basically the good version of NG3. With no doubt in my mind it will have a higher score. I mean, do you understand what type of flawless control scheme we are dealing with son? No better time to be a mutil plat gamer that's for sure =)

Whoa, Ben, I wasn't insulting the site in the slightest. A PlayStation-focused website will obviously cater to PlayStation gamers, just like an Xbox-focused website will focus towards the Xbox side.
If you did a similar poll asking gamers if the 'Xbox 360' was a good gaming platform, chances are, most people on this site will say it isn't.

Also, I actually don't participate on the forums. I'd love to, but just wouldn't be able to remain active enough to make any kind of difference.
I've been visiting PSXE since 2007, possibly earlier. (Blue PS3 giveaway days).

Anyways, I'd rather not get into any kind of flame war, especially not with an administrator. :p

I'm certainly interested in what Nintendo is going to have on offer but $350 for the only package worth getting isn't chump change. Not really. This unit is physically designed to be much cheaper than the regular slim, when they can shrink the CPU/GPU enough to get a worthwhile manufacturing and power saving, you'll see a new variant of the super slim with that new chipset, less powerful PSU, smaller cooling system and a lower price, but until that happens, it is what it is. From what I have been reading, there are two die shrinks possible from the current 40nm Cell and 45nm RSX. Nvidia is not apparently interested in working on shrinking RSX again, and the power gains from the initial die shrink of the Cell were not sufficient to merit the costs of re-tooling the Cell manufacturing line. So we'll have to wait and see if the second shrink brings a better return for Cell, and if Sony/IBM can shrink RSX (Or nVidia can be convinced to do it). They're still two separate chips as well, so there is the possibility that Sony is working with their partners to put both on the same chip, however that would mean that RSX would have to move to a new manufacturing process and it might not be worth the potential gains.
