Wait...There Are People Who Ignore The Multiplayer In CoD?

This is a new one.

As everyone knows - or rather, as everyone should know - Call of Duty has always been all about the multiplayer. Some of the campaigns are well worth playing but really, we never thought anybody dropped the $60 only to play the single-player aspect.

And yet, Treyarch design director David Vonderhaar just told One of Swords that it drives him nuts when people don't play multiplayer in CoD. In fact, they put a new Combat Training mode in the upcoming Black Ops II to encourage more people to go online. Said Vonderhaar:

As popular as [Call of Duty] is, there are a lot of people who don’t play [multiplayer]. And quite frankly, this bugs the sh** out of us. They should all play [multiplayer]. And Combat Training helps us get there."

I am so lost right now. I understand that not everyone has their game systems hooked up to the Internet but when it came to CoD, I really thought every last human alive who bought the game fully intended to go online. Hell, it's their top priority, yes? Do you know anyone who bought a CoD game in the past five years who only played the campaign?

'Cuz I don't.

Treyarch is often regarded as having some of the best Call of Duty campaigns, so I can see why.

I actually enjoyed the Story Mode of Black Ops and found BF3's campaign to be a big snoozer.

I don't play shooters online anymore. Actually, it has been a while since I played anything online. I got into Skyrim recently.

Actually I'm one of the few... After call of duty modern warfare 2 I stopped playing multiplayer all together. I didnt want to get sucked into multiplayer and be addicted to it so I will borrow the new releases of COD from my friend and finish the campaign. COD is probably the most addicted thing ever came along that is not a substance. You know you are addicted when
1. you shout at the TV because you died
2. you break something.
3. you insult people online
4. you ignore your love ones.
5. you have COD marathon
6. You rage power off to save your kill/death ratio.
I had to leave the country for a month to kick the habit.

I'm not big into online multiplayer so that's why I don't get these games to begin with. So I guess in a sense I ignore the multiplayer by ignoring the game.

Actually yes I know someone who doesn't play CoD online. Also I started CoD offline, then I discovered PSN and it blew me away. CoD4 was the first game I ever played online. It was also the CoD I used to play offline, because I had no connection online.

Not everybody likes playing multiplayer. Period. It might be very good but there's no reason why anybody should force themselves to do something they really do not like. They bought the game, they played the campaign, now all these devs need to do is to thank them for the support.

Sorry if my response seemed like I was contradicting you, Ben. I was not. I was only reacting to what the devs are saying about getting annoyed by gamers who do not play COD online.

To begin with, there's no way for me to tell if there's a lot of COD players that do not play online just because I don't have a lot of friends that play COD. :--)

It's just a bad sentiment to have when creating a game "Confound those people who only want to play my campaign! I will find a way to force them into multiplayer."

That's right, World. It's the guy's attitude towards non-MP players that annoys me.

I do not play a lot of FPS games. Sure, they're a lot of fun, particularly with friends. I get that. But I really get very nauseous after playing FPS games for even less than an hour! You have no idea how much I want to continue playing Borderlands, but I just cannot do that without me puking all over the place (sorry about the nasty image).

Reason #2 is that I'm just nowhere near the skill level of those playing online competitively. It's not for the lack of effort, mind you, but me playing an FPS is just like a fish out of water experience. So while I can still play an online game every now and then, I don't think I'll be enjoying the experience when I am merely being everybody's punching bag. LOL

That's why I tend to play more co-op games when I'm online. If I am playing COD and I hear something like that from the devs, I don't think I'd bother getting their next game.

I only read it that they want people to play CoD online, not necessarily every game made. And honestly, I'd say the same thing. We designed the game around mutliplayer (let's face it) and we want people to take advantage of that.

Ben, I have posted on many occasions that I love playing the COD campaigns but I never play the online portions of those games. I buy the games, play the campaign and then give the game to my son. He plays the he** out of the MP, but it is not for me. So now you know one person that buys the COD games but doesn't play the MP.

See I don't like it when game makers try to force you into the multiplayer. This guy is nuts and out of touch for thinking that is needed.

I know someone who doesn't play cod online because there's no point when everyone is too good at it, he also pays little attention to the campaign, he just likes the local multiplayer and zombies.

HA! I'm one of those people. I have 7 Call of duty games and the only one I've played online was COD Black ops because all my friends had the game. It's the only one I bought on console, the rest are on pc.

I like the campaign mode, Modern Warfare is by far my favorite. I don't by the games on release day, I wait till they drop to 20$.

I'll play a few matches online, and perhaps continue if I really do like the game or my friends are playing them, but I definitely spend more time with the single player stuff. Well actually Spec Ops are my favourite, and I do play that with a friend online, but that's not the online the developer is referring to.

ME, ME, ME, Ben!

I guess Treyarch's super double-qaudruple-ly pissed at me then, cause I have every single COD ever made for both the PS3 & 360 & I've played them all on "Single Player" mode only.

I certainly don't need COD's MP mode just to listen to the BS spewed by foul-mouthed lil 8 to 12 year old racist rugrats, nor do I have to deal with their spawn campers, glitch masters, or a-hole game hackers either.

No thanks, I'll play KZ3's multiplayer over COD any day of the week...and nights too.

And I can make Treyarch even more pissed than that, just by telling them I've paid no more than $15 to $20 used for any COD, because I'm not paying $60 for only 1/2 the game-play.

Like the old saying goes....
"My mama didn't raise no fool".

The only thing original with COD is the campaign. I've played the online modes too many times before, so I'm one of those dreadful gamers who only buys COD for the story modes.

Now, that doesn't mean I don't give the online functionality a go every once in a while. It's just, I honestly don't find it 'fun'.
It's not like they give me new stuff in the online modes to make it all worth while.
If anything, they end up reusing past ideas and painting them with a new coat of paint, and sometimes, even a new 'premium' price in the form of downloadable content packs.

I don't play it because i enjoy other things that don't include shooting people to gain max level to then give up my max level to get a mark on my name to then kill people to get max level again to then get another mark on my name to then re-do the process. Yeah, call of duty in a nutshell.

You would be surprised if you hang around a best buy / Future Shop and ask all the adults who pick-up COD if they actually play online. There ain't a ton but I got quite a few adult buyers who only wanted a bit of action from the campaign and couldn't care less about online competition.

And that is only in 1 out of 150 Future Shop stores so I guess if you take all the retailers into account then you end up with quite a few people who just want to follow the *trend* buy COD and get some action on the short campaign and tell their buddies they bought the latest COD.

I'm one of 'em!

I like a lot of online gameplay, especially co-op campaigns, but competitive, FPS multiplayer rarely interests me. Not coincidentally, I never got the appeal of Call of Duty and largely ignored the games. Black Ops, though, really caught my attention. I loved the premise of cold war-era combat missions, the birth of modern black ops, etc. I had never really played Call of Duty much before, so I figured why not give this series that is, for better or worse, going to define this generation?

I liked the campaign! It wasn't the best thing I ever played by any means, but I found the "set piece"-style combat setups that jumped around to different points of history really cool and diverse (even if that memory-probing set-up was stupid and completely unnecessary.) Storming Castro's compound was a particular highlight.

And then i was done with the game. Really did not feel the need to go online and virtually kill and virtually be killed over and over and over and over again. I had other, better games to play. don't know if I'll ever buy a COD game again, but I enjoyed the one I did, and just for the single player.

I just wish you could play the campaign co-op. You almost ALWAYS have an NPC with you anyways... and look at a game like Halo... there is ONLY the masterchief for most of it, yet you can co-op... they just throw in more enemies.

I'm surprised you still can't do that...

This doesn't surprise me at all - the CoD campaigns are quality Hollywood action-adventure romps, and plenty accessible, and CoD's online, while solid, has always been a bit ADHD and far too laggy (until they get dedicated servers for CoD online, it'll never be a top-tier online game in my eyes - ignoring the impact of lag on online gaming is like ignoring the handling when judging the quality of a sports car) for my liking - so when I get my CoDs, it's usually primarily for the offline or coop components. I think MW2 is the only CoD released that I've spent more time online on than with the SP/Coop (had mates on at the time). BLOPS 2 sounds good, and I like a lot of the things Treyarch say they're doing with it, but for my personal tastes (as someone who plays a fair bit online) I suspect I'll be a bigger fan of the campaign and zombies modes.

I own all three Modern Warfare games and I only tried online a couple times with MW1. I play games for the storyline and I enjoy the "big, stupid action movie" feel of the MW games. So yeah -- sorry for bugging the sh*t out of you, Treyarch, because I played through your two games without trying multiplayer, too.

Sounds like there are plenty of other people out there like myself who only play the CoD single player campaign... I've played COD Modern warfare 1&2 and World at war single player campaigns, never even considered going online in any of them.

Actually, now I'm lying.. I really did enjoy playing the zombie mode on World at war in single player, so I thought I'd give the multiplayer a try on it, just to see how it was.. Ugh only played two mp games until I got bored.. I'll never know what people see as fun in multiplayer...

This might sound weird... but I have NEVER bought a COD game EVER.... Got MW as a gift and then MW2 traded it out with a mate for a couple of weeks.....

I just never saw the point in buying it as I don't play onlne and never have (yet). mainly cause I don't have internet at home and if I did it would be F**** expensive where I'm from. Secondly gaming for me was and always will be my time to kick back and enjoy, so somehow i don't have the need to go online.

If I wanna swear at people nad get all freaked out and wired up I just go drive in traffic same effect. But that also being said I stayed away online gaming as I know I will probably dig it WAY to much and f**** up my live even more and be like my brothers one really really sad mate that is so hooked on online gaming that he can't even get hard from looking at real boobs in real life.... they have to be pixalated.

(Okay the last fact was a bit OTT but I think you get my point)
