Sony Talks Nintendo And Says "We're In Separate Camps"

It will come as no surprise to learn that Sony and Nintendo are - and have been - catering to different demographics.

So when Sony UK boss Fergal Gara was asked by Eurogamer about Nintendo's Wii U, and what threat that could pose to the PS3 (and maybe PS4 down the road), Gara said the two companies are "sitting in separate camps at this stage."

However, he did say they certainly watch Nintendo "with interest" and he also admitted that the upcoming Wii U is a promising product. Said Gara:

"We respect Nintendo as a highly successful competitor. Of course we will watch what they're doing with interest. It's a very interesting product they're bringing to market. I don't have a clear view on how successful it will be. And to a large extent it doesn't matter what I think. It matters what the great British public think. So we will see.

They certainly laid a broad church in terms of the list of features hopefully trying to have a broad appeal in the device. I don't think there will be huge volumes in the market this side of Christmas. I think they will pull in early adopters. It's probably one to be concerned about far more and watch more carefully into next year. But we feel very confident that in the PlayStation and we won't be going after the same niche early adopter market they'll be going after this Christmas. I think we're sitting in separate camps at this stage, so it won't be head to head."

Gara added that if the Wii U gains "real traction" in 2013 and beyond, it becomes a "more important factor." Right now, it's interesting to see how long-time fans of Nintendo respond to the Wii U; some are less than lukewarm and suspect another gimmick while others believe it will offer something fresh...and you can't go wrong with Mario in HD. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I started late when it comes to the video games, so I don't have the Nintendo nostalgia that a lot of you have. Sure, I played a few NES games with the other kids from our neighbourhood when I was a child, but it never made me ask my parents to buy me one.

I do not hate Nintendo, but I just couldn't care about their games. I will not take away anything from their iconic characters and popular franchises, but they're just not for me. If Nintendo invests into anything new that are more up my alley, then I might buy myself my first-ever Nintendo console. Right now, there's just none.

I've been playing Nintendo products from the beginning of time (or so it feels). As fun as some of their games can be (Zelda especially), I think their collection of "iconic characters" really kinda sucks TBH. I never liked any of the Mario characters, they're uncreative and stupid IMO (and the games are really tired now). Link and Zelda are whatever, both Samus and Donkey Kong are pretty cool, and both Kirby and anything Pokemon can stick it.

Sony's iconic characters blow Ninty's out of the water IMO.

I think Ninty and MS are more in competition now, what with the power grab over casuals. This might be difficult to defend though as soon as Sony premiere's some PS3/PS4 titles that use the Vita in a similar way as the Weeooo tablet.

C'mon Sega, make a console to compete with Nintendo again, I miss that old fight.

Can't wait to try this out. Sucks, at first I thought the WiiU was going to be portable, oh well.

wow, nice to see a $ony employee who does not have his head up his a$$!
congrats sir!
i hope they really are watching them closely, because im worried their underestimating them.
yea ninty were catering to a different crowd with the wii, but that has changed with the wiiu.
there still catering to their demographic with their first party titles, but then there also going after $ony and M$s customers with third party titles like black ops 2, and all the other third party titles releasing soon.
i really hope $ony does not think there not going to loose customers to ninty, because if they seriously think no playstation customer would move ship to the wiiu im sorry but you are in for a rude shock indeed!

The WiiU will have to be offering something rather spectacular for me to look twice. Putting out a console and saying "hey we've got CoD too!" is not enough for me to jump ship.
