XCOM May Be Undergoing Some Pretty Significant Changes

Everyone has been waiting on the XCOM remake from Firaxis, but there's another XCOM game that has fallen out of the public eye this past year...

It's supposedly still in the works at 2K Marin, and now it seems the game may have undergone a serious alteration. According to Kotaku, a recent marketing survey has furnished the publish with new screenshots. The title in question was supposed to be a retro FPS of sorts, but that looks like a third-person shooter, doesn't it?

It seems they're now trying to make the game like SOCOM or Republic Commando, as the player will be in command of a squad and the view will not be in the first-person. Furthermore, it's possible the project could end up as a digital-only title, as the survey asked how gamers would feel if the title was available digitally for only $30. For now, 2K has nothing to say on the matter.

Whenever projects disappear for an extended amount of time, you can bet something unexpected has occurred in the development process.

Sorry to say this , but that game is bound to fail in my opinion .The moment i saw some kind of gameplay i had a feeling it would be bad .

Can t say the same about x-com enemy unknown since it look great fun and like the good old games .

A squad-based, 3rd person, cheap, downloadable title may actually be not that bad. Especially since we've already been given the game we really wanted.

Speaking of which, are you planning to review XCOM: EU, Ben?

As in the one from the mid-90s? If so, I had it on N64 and remember it being pretty decent.

Eh...unfortunately, anything that old, regardless of how good it is, shows its age. That goes double in any shooter category.

There are newer Rainbow Sixes that you'd probably like more.

Rainbow six 3 Raven shield is the best rainbow six imo, and it actually holds up quite well. I know it is on the PC and I actually think its on the PS2 as well. Look around for it I think its better than the original. I tried the original on my Dreamcast more recently and its not bad but it is really really hard.

Considering it was supposed to have squad tactics elements in it from the get-go, I'm glad to see that that seems to be emphasised in this latest iteration in the title. And I think I've made it quite clear that I vastly prefer TPS to FPS in most cases. It could still wind up being a good game, but I really hope that they don't relegate it to a downloadable title. Especially if Enemy Unknown ends up being as good as it promises and, more importantly, sells to prove there is a place for XCOM in the retail sector.
