Japan Gets Specially Decorated PS3s
Japan gets all sorts of nifty stuff when it comes to hardware.
For example, check out what the Land of the Rising Sun is getting: Special edition versions of the new PlayStation 3 model. The designs are...interesting.
As you might expect, they're in honor of two titles that definitely appeal more to Japanese gamers: Yakuza 5 and The Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2. The latter has spawned the "Legend Edition" PS3, which features character art in white along the edge of the PS3, and a controller that portrays a Big Dipper design. This will be available on December 20. The Yakuza 5 "Emblem Edition" PS3 launches earlier on December 6, and boasts gold emblems of the game's crime families, a gold controller, and even a specially-themed USB drive.
How come Sony can't get all imaginative with hardware in this country? How come we don't get cool systems honoring games like Uncharted and Assassin's Creed? Sure, we get goodies and other content in collectors editions and what-have-you, but we rarely see decorated machines. :(

Basically, SCEA hasn't got the first clue of how to run the PlayStation game business which is why the North American core gamer market has been taken over by Microsoft. Unless and until they get their act together it will always be like this. I mean, how difficult is it to have multi-color units or units with custom skins themed to a particular game?
I'm sure some really pedantic little peon in SCEA will whine about the FCC approval. But you know, I'm willing to bet that there is a process for approving products that have different colored cases but the same internals without having to separately review each identical model just because the color of the outer shell changed.
Oh, but then that would infer that SCEA might have a clue, and as we know, they don't.

Maybe in Japan, people collect multiple editions of the same hardware. Do people do that here? Would you really buy a second or third PS3 if it had your favorite game character printed on it?
Or do some people hold out on getting a PS3 until "YES! Finally! The Fist of the North Star Edition is out! I knew it would come eventually! Now I'll get one!"?
Maybe I'm just not really a hardcore collector, but I don't see the appeal of limited edition hardware unless it's your first time getting that particular system. I suppose with the recent price drops, many of these could be people's first systems...but I still don't understand it.

YES I'M STILL FRUSTRATED ABOUT IT!!! Because I mean it just doesn't SEEM like a SONY kind of thing to do. SONY always has the best designs not just in PlayStation but in CONSUMER ELECTRONICS in general...and they thought up...THIS!?
Still hoping for a way to replace the corrugated top...and a niche market to open up where I can replace it!
