Weighty Playstation 3 Launch Date Rumor

Industry publication Next-Gen.Biz is reporting that a well-placed source has told them that Sony plans to launch the PlayStation 3 this coming September.

From Next-Gen.biz:

"Developer sources are also suggesting that PlayStation 3 is currently scheduled to launch in September. A launch games release schedule seen by our sources states a September launch. Although the schedule does not explicitly state a hardware launch date, nor a launch territory, we understand Japan and U.S will both see the machine in September."

Of particular interest is that the article also suggests that North America and Japan could see the system released within one week on one another. The industry is whispering September 16th and 21st as possible release dates for Japan and North America respectively.

Usually, we wouldn't pass along rumors, but Next-Gen.Biz is a well-placed publication that tends to have reliable insider sources.

Sony wouldn't confirm these rumors when we called either. We were told that nothing concrete would be announced until Sony held its media gathering at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in May.
