September NPD: Madden Thrives And Borderlands 2 Is A Hit
The sales results are in for September and although hardware took another steep dive, there's reason to believe this fall should be a positive one for the industry.
According to the NPD sales figures for last month, software sales were down 18% year-over-year (down to $497.4 million) and hardware plummeted 39% (down to only $210.9 million). But there is some good news when examining the upcoming months.
Madden NFL 13 was the top selling game for September, and the new iteration actually sold 11% better than last year's series entry. Bolstered by great word-of-mouth and huge critical acclaim, Borderlands 2 nailed down the #2 spot and enjoyed first-month numbers that are a whopping 234% better than the original title. And despite overall sales dropping 14%, PC software rose 12% thanks to the likes of World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, Guild Wars 2, and Diablo III.
Hopefully, a lot of top-notch titles for the fall will return the industry to an upward trend. Cross your fingers!
