Is Medal Of Honor: Warfighter The Biggest Disappointment Of 2012?
These days, it's actually quite rare for a hotly anticipated, mega-hyped video game to fall far short of critical and sales expectations. Thankfully.
But as of now, it seems as if the recently released Medal of Honor: Warfighter may take the undisputed crown of Most Disappointing Game of 2012. Currently, the Metacritic ranking for the 360 version is 51, the PS3 version is 54, and the PC version is 58. As for me, I had to give it a 6, and it's definitely my most disappointing game of the year.
I often remember games that perform better than expected, that turn out to be something fantastic when everyone was only expecting average quality. Those are the games I prefer to remember; I really don't want the colossal screw-ups bouncing around in my recall banks. The problems with Warfighter are glaring and obvious, as most all critics have said by now, and this may seriously hinder sales. Bad news for EA. It's difficult to find another title in 2012 that came even close to this level of disappointment. Then again, the year isn't over just yet...
What do you think?

The Last Guardian: When all games next gen disappoint, the appropriately named Last Guardian will surface out of nowhere as a last defense of gaming quality. This game will remind us about greatness, but only in a dire time of need.

It's unfortunate that this game appears to be falling victim to a "crime" military FPS all commit. Shoot, cover, explosion, shoot, cover, move! I've read a few pieces of reviews here and there, and all of them compliment the game in areas, but are really stuck on the fact it's just another shooter. Some claim the game play isn't good, but I can't laugh harder at that. It plays like any other military FPS, with just as tight if not tighter controls. Not to mention there are very memorable moments that you just wish wouldn't end. The car chases bring an element that may not be use enough in FPS, just to get away from the shooting for a moment.
I've already said the graphics are great, and this appears to be a weird situation where half the consumers/reviewers got bunk copies while the other half have enjoyed a game that runs perfect. How and why that happens I have no idea, but it appears that way. Numerous people I've talked to even on this very website are playing a game that runs and plays like it was expected.
The story hasn't been discussed much, and I think those who have playe it really enjoyed it. It's not in depth, or flashy, it's just sympathetic and realistic. It's not hard to follow at all, and the characters grow on you. You feel for them, and that's something this series is doing great in focusing on. Theres a sense of bringing these "Warfighters" stories into our living rooms through the video game, and that's awesome to me.
Not a disappointment to me. Again this is a case where if I'd have listened to the reviews, id have missed out on another good - to - great game.

Now while I respect others opinions, I believe several reviewers have been unfair in their complaints in regards to the fact MOH Warfighter is "just another shooter".
In reality, this game has done nothing that Black Ops 2 will be doing shortly and that's offering the same type of experience their predecessors gave. MOH Warfighter is a shooter, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else.
Why does this game get treated to 5-6 scores when COD has offered the same forumla over and over again? Regardless to what that answer is, I am glad I opened my MOH game and placed it in my PS3 dispite what the reviews said.

The whole presentation of the game is fantastic, but it really drops the ball on what was advertised as an emotionally charged shooter and exploring the soldiers outside of combat. There's scenes in the game where it's protrayed like no other game has done before, but I felt no connection to any of it. The relationships just weren't built up enough.
If you've played the scene with the execution, I didn't even know who died, which is really saying something about the character development. The main enemies had no background to them or anything either.
As a "game" it's great. Few bugs like sound cuts in the beginning etc, but the shooting and variety is a lot of fun and Frostbite 2.0 is sexy as hell. The car chases were fun as well, especially the one with stealth. Story though, which was heavily advertised was a huge disappointment, and that's what people were looking for in Warfighter. Haven't touched the MP so nothing to say there.

Obviously I think we are on the same page. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it as well.
Nick-
I like that your fair in your response. You sound like many of the reviews did but didn't short it just because... Honestly, to me a 7 isn't a bad score, we probably wouldn't be referring to the game as a "disappointment" or anything else had it received a 7. You seem to praise the game in many, many areas, aside from the story. I'm noticing most reviewers saying the gameplay isn't that great, where you said "the shooting and variety is a lot of fun... The car chases were fun as well". Which is interesting to see so many different responses towards a game.
But I disagree with the story part. Which isn't abnormal, as we all have opinions. But as I said in my comment, MoH brought the stories of these "Warfighters" into our living rooms through a video game. I felt a connection and each character grew on me. I thought they did a great job portraying a soldiers life and the decisions he has to make between his love and duties as a man and a soldier. There's a lot of emotion that's brought to light when you see the soldier looking at his daughter, but knowing what he's saying to his wife may not be something he can commit to dispite what he really wants.
I can't see how there isn't an "emotional charge" when you realize the types of sacrifices that are being made video game or not. This game presents a situation where this soldier lives a life where having two things that matter to him contradict. And it's told as well as it could have in this situation. Maybe a longer campaign would help to iron that out a bit, but other than that, it was easy to follow, told well in the confines of the game, and sympathetic to the situation.
Kudos for bringing up good points of discussion!

People can't hear each other in matches, there's a black-screen plague, so many HATE the presentation and how it's set up, games are crashing, etc. It's just a mess. On top of which, that story really fell way short in terms of emotion and writing. I'm sorry but for what was promised, the final product wasn't even close.

The mention of mp, wasn't brought up from me because I don't just play these games for the mp, the campaigns matter to me. But since we are on the subject, what is MoH "lacking" exactly? There is tons of weapon choices, tons and tons of weapon mods, varying game modes, varying landscapes and maps, differing classes, killstreaks, varying gameplay techniques, improvements on the attempt at making teamwork more prominent. I mean it's all there. It takes a more realistic approach, there's no perks, you know like the extended knife perk in CoD (apparently that's gone now, thankfully).
As far as the story, I don't think EA or Danger close ever "promised" the story and writing would be revolutionary. Should we even expect that from an FPS? There's a premise here in this game, that has a lot of emotion, if it's lost in the writing, I didn't notice personally, but it's there and it's good. Could it have been better, sure, but depending on who writes it, it may have been a little different too.

But that story just wasn't very well done from any artistic standpoint, and I'll have to stand by that.

theres many, many games out this year that ended up more disappointing.
starhawk, dishonoured, ME3, darksiders 2, sleeping dogs, diablo 3, the secret world, just to name a few.
all of those were far more disappointing because they actually had hype and expectations behind them!
it was quite obvious from the get go that warfighter was going to be pretty meh, and thats probably why i enjoyed it allot more than what i was expecting, because for once a game was actually better than what i was expecting!
for once a developer says heres our game, they dont make any bullsh*t false promises, and outlandish claims, they just show the god dam game!
thank you danger close for bucking the trend!
warfighter is a perfect example of whats wrong with this industry.
every review has ripped it a new one because it has a poor inconsice story, and faceless boring characters.
which it most certainly does, i could not care less about the characters, and i have no idea what the hell was going on with the story!
but so what!?
since when are war games so deep and famous for story telling?
sorry, did i miss something?
was this written by david cage or something was it?
so im assuming black ops 2 will be ripped a new hole as well, too?
because if that has a better story and better characters than warfighter ill give you everything i own and every cent in my bank account!
really pisses me off how reviewers rip one game for something, than give others a free pass!
sorry bubs, but whats good for the goose is good for the gander!
warfighter gets ripped for having a poor story, than EVERY game gets ripped for having a poor story!

Complains for this game is basically "seen here, done that." Is CoD that much different than that? Perhaps it does revolutionize the fps genre every year... in sales.

Skyrim represent the only instance over all the years with the PS3 that I regret that I bought the PS3 version. I should have gotten me the PC version.
I can't imagine anything happening the last two months of this year that can beat that disappointment.

I'm not a fan of the 'buddy spawn' though - its frustrating when you almost respawn only for your "buddy to be in danger" so the timer resets - sometimes several times - also the enemy regularly seems to have their 'buddy' respawn behind me just as im about to engage ... but thats about the only complaint I have.
Only 8 maps so far - hopefully that will change.
If your looking for inovation/something fresh etc etc - don't buy a military FPS.
If you want a multiplayer shooter that you can swap discs with BLOPS 2 then this fits nicely.
Will the MOH Warfighter community shrink substantially on Nov 13th ? Oh yes - but so long as they support the game and give us new map packs this will perfectly compliment BLOPS 2 for all of us online FPS junkies.

Knowing EA it will be patched like hell anyways and they will fix it up. Just give it time...
