Rockstar: Missions In GTAV Are "More Freeform" Than Before
We're all goin' a little GTAV crazy today, as Trailer #2 is already sparking conversation and discussion everywhere.
To complement that, IGN has interviewed Rockstar producer Leslie Benzies, who has been behind-the-scenes, toiling away since Grand Theft Auto III.
One of the more interesting parts of the interview centered on the mission structure we'll see in the upcoming new installment. Benzies noted that in the past, players have always discovered new ways of tackling and completing missions, and they definitely didn't want to restrict that freedom in GTAV. Therefore:
"We do have a bunch of missions in GTA V that are far more freeform than anything we have done before. We tell you to go get something and the player decides how to do it - what characters they need on the job and what tools they need for those characters."
Furthermore, because we'll have three characters at our disposal (it doesn't appear we'll only focus on one character at a time), the breadth of choices expands even more. And because you can continue to choose exactly how you'll approach the mission, different players will have very different experiences. Said Benzies:
"Having multiple characters gives the player more options for the way they play the game. In particular missions, characters will perform certain roles. A player who hangs back and plays as a sniper for an entire mission will have a very different experience to a player who stays close to the action or to a player who switches between them on the fly."
Switches between them on the fly? That sounds interesting. I also wonder how jarring that will be during periods of intense action...might get a little discombobulating, don't you think? Well, whatever. This game is going to rule in so many different ways.

I hope this "freedom" means the mission isn't over because a car you're chasing gets ahead of you. I was always like hey I can see him on my map so I can catch up. Y U fail me?
