Will The Next Mass Effect Be A Prequel?
BioWare has said the next Mass Effect is in "early development," which is kinda vague but hey, we just saw the end of the Trilogy this year.
The developer has been turning to the fans for feedback and suggestions concerning the new project, which is always good. Most recently, Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson posed the following query on Twitter:
"Parsing through your thoughts on the next #ME game. Would you be more interested in a game that takes place before the trilogy, or after?"
So would you rather have a prequel or a sequel? For those who completed Mass Effect 3, they know how it ends...and how challenging a sequel might be. Then again, it can be argued that prequels are a little overdone and even cliched, despite the fact that BioWare usually has some of the industry's very best writers at their disposal. At this rate, there's no guarantee the new ME will be called "Mass Effect 4" as that'd be a pretty silly title for a prequel.
It's nice to know nothing is set in stone, and the developer is open to all sorts of suggestions. So feel free to make your voice heard.

By the way, even though I'm hoping for a more interesting title than 'Mass Effect 4', 'Metal Gear Solid 3' wasn't a silly title for a prequel.

A prequel offers a lot more freedom. But either way, I'm in! ;)

New story, new characters, new conflicts, set in the same universe. That's what I want.

There were so many good ideas in ME1 even just in the planet description that could make for some excellent prequels or sequels.
But personally regardless of what they do, if they keep on the streamlining path they have been on since EA jumped on board I'm not going to touch it. I'm tired of RPGs becoming action games or shooters just to appease the larger demographic that doesnt truly appreciate great detailed stories like ME1, and the slower more methodical combat of a true RPGS.

There are so many things they could do with a prequel, with a sequel...who would be the threat? Cerberus arguably the most terrible organization in the galaxy is pretty much gone, the reapers are either dead, or enslaved, and all the relays are destroyed. Geth and quarian arent fighting anymore, krogans and salarians are cool ..sort of. I dunno.
I'm sure they would tip toe around that but I just don't see how they would make anything compelling in the future.
If they go into the prequel territory they can cover all sorts of wars and stuff, plus plug in nice easter eggs pertaining to the reapers.

That right there is the biggest reason I'm skeptical about doing prequels. So many opportunities for good stories there, but it almost feels like a cop-out to prequels these days, since, well, everyone does them, usually as a way to avoid advancing a given series into new, uncharted, possibly unpopular wars (See: Gears of War: Judgement, God of War: Ascension, etc.)

One of the core principles of Mass Effect is that your choices make a crucial difference with how things turn out in the universe. We can argue over how well they implemented that principle, but at the very least it's central to the game.
A prequel, however, is by its nature a story that needs to stick to one narrative outcome. Undermines the whole thing, as far as I'm concerned.

I myself would rather see a sequel. A new threat?
I also want them to have more in-depth character development, I was disappointed with James Vega and other boring characters. Can't they make them all unique?
