Canceled Streets Of Rage Remake Coulda Been A Ton O' Fun

Ah, Streets of Rage. That brings back memories of arcade goodness, doesn't it?

Side-scrolling brawlers were big in those days; it's not so common today, although we will recommend Double Dragon: Neon for all you old-school lovers out there.

As for Streets, did you know that developer Ruffian Games had been working on a remake? It has unfortunately been canceled (and we don't know why), but studio boss Gary Liddon has uploaded footage of the remake in action; this is a playable prototype of the new-look brawler. Said Liddon:

"It was something we built very rapidly and represents pre-pre-pre-pre (lots of pres) pre-alpha quality. Even so, it has a certain charm."

It's obvious that this is an early version of the game, but it certainly had promise. It's really not fair that we won't see this bad boy at some point; it coudl've been another great downloadable title, I think. Just to be able to wander the streets again, beating the tar out of anyone who shows up, would be a treat and a half for older gamers like me. Maybe someone will try to do a Freedom Force remake...

By the way, Ruffian is the team currently working on the potentially amazing Watch Dogs.

We need a serious comeback with titles like these. Ever since the 3D age has hit side scrolling fighters has vanished. Which is a real shame, I mean there was Fighting Force on the PS1 but the 2ns one just turned into a 3rd person shooter. Then there was The Bouncer for the PS2, which I still really like, I just wish the story mode was 2-player. But as Multiplayer is all online based, that would be out of the question. If they Announced a Streets of Rage 4, I have to say I would be curious.

dang it, i hate when games get cancelled when they looked cool. I think I'm more into the side-scrolling style. I'm getting a Fighting Force vibe from what they had going but still very cool.

sigh, oh well.

goty to be it can't

Dude that looks great. I can't BELIEVE the freeform brawler doesn't exist anymore. With the tech we have it just doesn't make any damn sense!

Kickstart this game!

Reminds me sooooo much of The Bouncer. Wish they didn't cancel it as it looked like it had real promise. The gen doesn't have any true beat'em up titles at all. I miss games like Streets of Rage and Final Fight.

Nooooooo!!!!!!! That looks like Super Double Dragon 2!! I wish they would have remade Super Double Dragon. This looks great and as soon as I saw him grab the bad guy and work him over I was sold! Come on, someone pick this up and don't let it go to waste. Streets of Rage is an amazing franchise.

Super Double Dragon on SNES was awesome. It probably had the best combat system of any brawler for it's time, and even for quite some time after that.

Just goes to show that sometimes, developers do deserve a second chance. By every account, Crackdown 2 sucked hard, but this looks cool and if it's true that they're working on Watch Dogs as well...
This team will be one to watch in the coming years.

I was into Crackdown 2 when it first released but after a few days it got boring. Got to a point where all I wanted to do is get the green power orbs just to get a jet pack and bulk up. Nothing like kicking a enemy clear across the screen

Not sure what the name is but i remember this side scrolling game where you choose a monster and you can go on a ramapage and destroy buildings and eat people and stuff. Thats a game i'd like to see remade.

Knightzane,

I couldn't remember right off the top of my head, so I went into my PS1 collection and I believe that it's the old "Rampage" series that you're talking about.(I have the Rampage World Tour).

Yeah man, that would be Rampage you're remembering. I had that game on Atari. Rampage World Tour is on PSN too if you look for it, or at least it was at some point because I have it on my PS3. Good times :)

WHYY I HAVE BEEN WAITING and wanting a streets of rage remake for soo long. Atleast give us streets of rage 4 as a 4 player side-scrolling 2d beat em up. The awesomeness of Rockstar Games "The Warriors showed that beat em up can succeed if done right. They need to kickstart this I would be first in-line to pay for it.

That intro in the beginning is nice. Streets of rage 2 is probably my favorite beat em up of all time, next to the Original Turtles in Time and "The Warriors"... The bouncer was good too, it was missing multiplayer and longevity.

I wonder why it was cancelled?! For being such an early pre-alpha code it looks pretty darn great!

We don't see games like this anymore...
