Be Happy, Dark Souls Fans: A Sequel Is Headed Your Way
Update: We just got the press release:
Dark Souls II will feature a new hero, new storyline and unfamiliar world. Plus, we'll get a revamped server-based multiplayer mode and those patented "epic, gruesome battles." Said Namco Bandai Games America Inc. Vice President of Marketing Carlson Choi:
"Dark Souls II retains the core essence of Dark Souls while evolving to present new twists and challenges that are sure to please longtime fans and attract new comers to the series. FromSoftware is going to take a very dark path with Dark Souls II; players will need to look deep within themselves to see if they have the intestinal fortitude to embark on this journey."
Original Story:
Those who loved Demon's Souls desperately wanted a follow-up effort. They got it when Dark Souls arrived.
And now, surprise surprise, the fans want another hardcore, ultra-challenging title from developer From Software. They're getting it yet again, too, as Dark Souls 2 was announced during the 2012 Video Game Awards.
The trailer on display didn't tell us anything supremely important besides the fact that a sequel is in the works. We don't know platforms or estimated release date, but you can probably guess the platforms without much trouble, and here's hoping the anticipated title arrives in 2013. Thus far, Dark Souls has sold about 1.2 million copies in North America and Europe since its launch in October 2011. That's a really solid number considering the kind of game it was.
So if you were a fan of Dark Souls, what do you want to see in the sequel? Do you have any interest in From Software easing off on the difficulty? I'm guessing most avid followers would say no...the challenge is precisely what makes it so special, yes?

All I want is more of the same with general improvements. Continue the trend of it being challenging but once mastered is he best game you've ever played. And continue making the bosses bigger, scarier, and more bad ass.
I wish it was next gen, cuz that's a system seller for me.
The VGAs were awesome, good reveals of south park, the last of us and BioShock infinite were insane and the surprise reveal of this make this day bigger then e3 IMO.

I seriously need to hold on to someone this news is fantastic.
As for the difficulty...no I want it more challenging but in different ways. Right now if you figure out weapon crafting and enemy patterns the game becomes pretty easy. Sure making a mistake will still get you killed but it becomes a lot easier as time goes on.
I want maybe less emphasis on RPG health bars and more emphasis on enemies requiring unique methods to kill them.
I just want more enemies to have special ways to kill them. Heck maybe even an enemy you can't actually hurt and you have to lure them to a ledge and kick them off or something.
My only concern for this game would be them trying to attract "casual" newcomers and they dumb down the aspects of the game that fans have come to expect.
I doubt Fromsoftware would do this, but that is my only concern, otherwise I just want more from this series. Its such a breath of fresh air.

No other game gives you the sense of accomplishment that this game does and an easier mode while good for more casual gamers might not let them feel that.
If they were really smart and could figure out how to balance it for new players I'm for it.
But I would say you should try Darksouls 1, and watch some youtube videos and get involved with the community because to be completely honest it isn't nearly as hard as a lot of the critics and even players say it is. If you can come to terms with you will die a lot but that nothing really bad happens that is a great start. Otherwise you just need to be really careful with the stamina bar, which is the mistake most new players make. They swing the sword around like it is god of war but then the stamina drains and they get hit for more damage and they can't block.
The combat is about moving in getting a hit or two and moving out and blocking. If very tactical and not a button masher at all. Once you learn how to manage the stamina bar the rest of the game is just about remember what enemies are weak against what and what moves are one hit kills, and ALL one hit kill moves are telegraphed and you always have time to dodge them plus there aren't that many and when your HP pool gets higher those 1 hit kills stop one hit killing you.
Anyone I'm glad you are interested in the series I suggest trying it out but just use guides and tutorials to help you if you get stuck. The dark souls community is one of the best, and mostly everyone is friendly and willing to give strategies and help to new players.

If you give the player all the tools to succeed and those tools work perfectly, why wouldn't you make it a challenge. I was scared when they were making Dark Souls and not Demon Souls 2. I thought they may have sold out to the twitch - casual market. Thankfully that wasn't the case.
This game is the truest example of risk versus reward. I believe that if a game doesn't provide a certain challenge to the gamer, then why do you even play. I am 31 and don't have time to go through the motions of a game anymore.
This whole you can't really lose mentality that has been infused into todays generations of games, is a total waist of time. There is more excitement just walking out your door then playing games that hand stuff to you. Dark Souls however, provides a world different then the one we exist in.
It draws you in, and for the brief time you play you truly believe you are the character discovering this world. Much like FF and Zelda from past generations, it has meaning. Meaning that counts, that when you finish its sticks with you as a memory that can be accessed long after its conclusion.
This can't be said for the twitch - casual games of this generation. They don't leave that lasting appeal. They are only ever worth while in the moment. A true testament to a great game is its lasting effect in your mind, because lets be honest at the end of the day; its the memories in life that define us and give us meaning.
