The Phantom Pain Screenshots Surface

The Phantom Pain had a rousing debut at this past weekend's Spike TV 2012 Video Game Awards.

Some have assumed it's somehow connected to the iconic Metal Gear Solid franchise, as the character seen in the trailer with the eye patch resembles Snake. As for why they're hiding the game's full identity, visit the NeoGAF forums for some possible explanations.

Now, developer Moby Dick has released new screenshots, which you see here. They're taken from that trailer so if you haven't seen it, this is your first glance at a very promising (and apparently highly polished) title. The mystery continues as nobody has really heard of the development team in question, and the CEO's first name is Joakim, which is an acronym for Kojima.

Perhaps this is a next-gen title that may or may not be a spin-off of MGS. Or maybe they just don't want to steal the thunder of the recently announced Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. Whatever the reason(s), we expect to see more of this title in due time...and when we do, there might be a whole lot of amazed gamers out there.

I've got to wonder if this is just Kojima's way of pranking or teasing us.

And it's an actual part of a new styled hype-train for MGS Ground Zeroes.

At least, that's what I'm thinking so far.

I think that this is Kojima pranking us. I have a hunch that this is just a segment from Ground Zeroes that takes place either in reality or in Big Bosses mind. Also I think that the bandaged character is the villain from Ground Zeroes, do you remember how his face looked really messed up and almost melted? That or it is Jaeger who is in the midst of being turned into Gray Fox, which would fit the time period.

As for why snake has a fake hand, it could be a dream type sequence or it could be real and we find out that snake gets his arm replaced by a genome soldier in an experimental surgery or something. My main reason for thinking its in a dream or something is that at the end it says, He has come too, which to me means he has woken up.

I mean, that HAS to be snake, it looks exactly like him if it is not something to do with MGS then Kojima is just a tease, but there are so many references to MGS in that trailer, the captions "no where to hide" was from MGS4, the flag at the beginning is the union jack which could be a little poke at Jack who turns into raiden, Volgens(or whoever the electric bad guy from 3 is) suit is in there on the flaming guy I think, and it looks like at the end you see psycho mantis.

Either way totally excited about it whatever it is.

At the end of pic 3, person was hanged by a rope, it looks like the person killed himself or somebody.

This is definitely MGS related. Probably Ground Zeroes.

This is Konami building hype for the game....

If you dig down into it, Moby Dick is a start up that magically appeared very recently, the domain name for the website http://www.mobydickstudio.se/ was only registered a month ago, and expires in 2013.

A random startup doesn't show up on the scene and then produce a trailer of THAT quality and then have that trailer play at the VGA. I mean... come on.

There is a twitter page for Joakim, it is full of typical things to say, and completely random things too, it is LIKE someone from KojPro is trying to throw us off.

On his twitter he talks a lot about everyone having a "phantom pain". The 'fake' arm is part of that, and is a physical manifestation of the 'phantom pain' the character has, and we all know that Big Boss has had a very hard life, and experienced MANY tragic events. My conclusion is that the trailer is a section of MGS:GZ which takes place in some sort of dream state in Big Boss' mind, perhaps controlled/brought on by some sort of Physcho Mantis character (or maybe the real one?). Or it could be his Ogre project which is related to MGS.

The tag line for the original MGS:GZ promotional was "From FOX; two phantoms were born", and since the guy from the MGS:GZ trailer is all scared on his face, the guy from the TPP trailer with bandages COULD be that guy.

One of the guys walking around VGA with the Phantom Pain team was Kyle Cooper, who was a notable title sequences developer for MGS 2 + 3.

The camera work, narrative and just about everything is heavily influenced by MGS, and seems like it definitely came from KojPro.
Also,
Joakim Mogren = Kojima mOGREn

Finally,
The title image for The Phantom Pain, CLEARLY has lines and parts of the letters are 'overlapped' by something else, that something else matches up perfectly with Metal Gear Solid V. Well, the second word is 100% GEAR, you can see the A perfectly.

I really think this is using the new fox engine he was talking about before, is seems pretty close to his other pics of that engine, maybe this is project ogre he was referring too? To many things here to look into!

After big boss has his 1st fight with solid snake in metal gear he was missing his left forearm & hand plus received more damage to his face.
This could be his recovery interrupted by the patriots or maybe its his own organisation trying a rescue and also cleaning house but big boss is totally out of it on meds and doesn't recognise anyone while tripping titanic ballz.

Do you think that the bandaged face character could be Gray Fox? Now that you have presented that information it makes a lot of sense that this is from the metal gear universe.

Where is the info on big boss losing his hand to solid snake.

could be gray fox all right, they team up in metal gear 2:solid snake.

Would love for a remake of Metal Gear 1 & 2 someday. Heard about those games (would love to play them) but there were made for a older system a long time ago.

You'd be surprised how well Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake holds up for an MSX game. It plays like the PS1 Metal Gear Solid in many ways, even the story was compelling - I cannot speak so highly on the original Metal Gear though... Both are on the PS3 release of the Metal Gear Solid HD collection and worth any fans time.

There is a really interesting article on ign about how this game may be metal gear V. Like for instance, the title at the end of the trailer has a bunch of lines through the letters. Could be wrong but the lines totally match up with METAL GEAR SOLID V. also who has a name like joakim M"ogre"n? Oh and i guess at the vga's, which publishing team was wearing Moby Dick shirts? Konami. Sure it's all speculation but man it's quite uncanny.

I think we saw the same article. I was just going to mention the METAL GEAR SOLID V overlap image that was posted. Seems too much to be a coincidence.

Also, Ben, Joakim is an anagram for Kojima, not an acronym.

I'm sure one of you geniuses already spotted this since you're all focused on the anagram for Kojima in there, so you've probably also noticed ...The founder of Moby Dick Studio is listed as Joakim Mogren – Kojima, Project M'ogre'n.

Is it safe to say that Heavy Rain has had an influence on the industry? I kind of got an interactive drama like gameplay vibe from this one.
And as a Metal Gear fan the MGS references make my pants feel tighter.

Interestingly, all of these screens are 960x540 resolution. The Vita's native res. is 960x544. MGSV indeed...

Hmm, I'll be keeping my hopes down and think of it as Ground Zeroes cause it's unlikely 2 main MGS are being developed at the same time.

Cool screens, but I kinda wish that not every source was likening The Phantom Pain to MGS5 at every opportunity. I get it, there are similarities, but when everything written links the two, without any confirmation whatsoever, it just feels as though it's taking the mickey. But then, there are likely some out there that don't trawl a heap of sites and see so many references, so I won't hold it against PSXE; at least this is only the second time you've brought up the possibility.

Anywho. I'm cautiously anticipating this game due to it being THE PHANTOM PAIN and interesting looking in that respect.

this has just brought the hilarity of the industry, just because it has a character that looks allot like a MGS character that means it HAS to be MGSV.
not ground zeroes, or maybe a spin off, HAS to be MGSV.
oh well, just goes to show people will read what they want to read.
i think people need to lay off the coat hangers, moonshine and tin foil!
