Naughty Dog: The Last Of Us Multiplayer Won't Be "Tacked On"

Those who still love and appreciate the single-player gaming experience have been getting more and more suspicious as this generation has progressed.

Many have wondered if, due to the multiplayer explosion, developers are utilizing more resources for multiplayer, thereby sacrificing resources for the campaign. On the flip side, there are multiplayer fans who are worried that their favorite feature will feel tacked on in a single-player-oriented title.

But hey, we're talking about Naughty Dog, here. Uncharted had multiplayer, too, and did anyone think the option detracted from those amazing campaigns? I sure didn't. And that multiplayer was pretty damn solid, too. As for The Last Of Us, Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer said we don't have to worry about anything; in the Comments over at the PlayStation Blog, he made it quite plain:

"We donít approach [multiplayer] in any of our games as tacked on. And we also always have separate teams working on the different components so that we can maintain full focus on making [single-player] and [multiplayer] up to our standards."

Those standards are through the roof, too. We all know that. Personally, I'm on the single-player side but I still want the most complete package possible, one that satisfies as many gamers as possible. Nothin' wrong with that. And Naughty Dog is just the team to do it.

There's MP? Well damnit. I just spoiled it for myself. I haven't watched anything since the reveal trailer with i think one after that. Nothing shall spoil the epicness that this game will possess. Well i know for a fact that even with uncharted's co-op and MP modes that the single player campaign had plenty to go back to. Last of us is going to be so f-ing amazing.

Didn't even know there was going to be mp. I didn't ever hear them announce such a thing.

That's ok with me though, at least they understand their fans. It's really frustrating me seeing Sony Santa Monica push the mp in GoW so hard. I know its new, and they want people interested, I get that! But I'm a fan because of SP and high standards the games have! Show me something that made me fall in love with the series to begin with! But the mp does look intriguing to say the least! ;)

Anything ND does I have complete confidence in. They are a very dedicated team and that shows in their work.

Not a fan of multiplayer unless it's local split screen, preferably co-op, played each mode of Uncharted 2 & 3 mp and found it more of the same.

These guys can spin it however they want, separate teams is all well and good but the fact remains that two teams on one game means money/resources gets split between the two.

Their point was that they do the two modes separately so yea money is split but they have one team than can fully focus on the SP, and one that can fully focus on the mp, so neither is losing any development time. They aren't and were not trying to "spin" anything.

I think it could be argued that Uncharted 3's shorter campaign with less story substance was affected. I have no proof though.

That's a terrible argument to get into because I think that would be a minority feeling.

I wouldn't say that MP did that either - maybe - but like you said, we can't prove it. I just think that they had such a great game with UC2 that they didn't meet everyones expectations with UC3. UC3 was still pretty freakin' sweet. And most of their MP elements were already in place from UC2.

You could say the development of The Last of Us affected Uncharted 3 and it's multiplayer. They didn't have the whole team working on one game at time of course, and if you look around Naughty Dog does admit to regretting that 11.1.11 release date somewhere in those ever growing complaints on their official forums.

Yes I would believe that The Last of Us affected Uncharted 3 more than any other argument. And yes, as spectacular as the game was, at times I felt it deserved more polish. I say deserved because so much effort is out into their games, that if The Last of Us did hinder time spent with Uncharted 3, well it didn't deserve that type of treatment, even if that means The Last of Us doesn't show up until holiday 2013.

its sadly a pointless futile battle, because this will always be a concern people have, and developers will never be able to quell that.
simple matter of the fact though is they said they have a separate team working on the MP.
so wouldent the game benefit from MP being canceled and that team being used to improve the SP?
im intrigued to see what they do with the MP, im hoping they will do something different and interesting with it.
but that said id much rather see the whole studio focused on making the campaign as good as it can be.
and hell at the worst thing that could happen by that result is the game is finished earlier so we get the game sooner.
the best result, well, due to the extra manpower we were able to cram a few extra things into the game, and had extra time to polish it.
worthy sacrifice for multiplayer no?
bottom of the line is simple, there just adding the MP to help slow used sales and trade ins, and also hopefully gain a sale or two.
thats the ONLY reason their adding MP!

The most awesome MP I played has to be BFBC2! Why? Because it was my first online multiplayer on my PS3...I played online on my PC but the feel is just too different!

I had no clue this was going to have mp in it anyway. So this is a plus in my book Naughty Dog really hit the mark with the Uncharted 2 and 3 mp modes. As long as the weapon balancing is good I'll be happy. I'll be playing this primarily for the story though
