PlayStation 3 Hits 30 Million In Europe, 70 Million Worldwide

Just to make it clear one more time- The PlayStation 3 launched a year after the Xbox 360...and yet, the two consoles have sold about the same number of units worldwide.

Sony announced today that their flagship console has moved 30 million units across Europe and PAL territories, and that number represents systems sold, not merely systems shipped.

That means the PS3 is at about 70 million in worldwide sales and coincidentally, the Xbox 360 was at 70 million overall as of October (for the record, the Wii has moved 97 million as of September). It seems reasonable now that at some point down the road, in a few years time when the PS4 is around and the PS3 is still selling well based on price tag and available library, the PS3 could end up with more sales than either the 360 or Wii. The first Xbox didn't sell nearly as well as the PS2 when the next generation rolled around, remember, and the Wii is essentially done selling. At least, that's how I see it.

So is this not in line with Sony's original expectations back in 2006 that everyone laughed at?

That's why Sony has staying power, long term plans and long term sales income from investments. That's in direct opposition to MS's blitzkrieg strategy and why gamers should have faith.

ive been through WAY more than 5 ps3s!
well actually, 3 went to a faulty bluray drive and 2 to YLOD so thats 5 already not counting the few that had the similar RLOD and the faulty power supply.......
pisses me off when people constantly say yea well how many of those are replacements, acting like the ps3 has never had reliability issues.
ive been through 0 360s.

All I can think of is all those websites out there that constantly ripped the PS3.

I am sure that some of them will expect credit because of how their criticism "pushed" Sony along, but here we are, and Sony's original statement of 100 million units is now inevitable.

EDIT - Oh, and my parents just bought a PS3 for Christmas. They are both in their 50's too.

Nice. And don't forget y'all more 360's have probably been re-purchased by the same user due to RRoD than YLoD by a considerable margin.


Also, a co-worker of mine just bought two Vita's for each of his sons for Christmas =)

he didn't leave cause of one single comment.

Highlander always had an issue with being argued against, that was something he never tackled very well. When all of you tried to change his mind it simply became too much for him.
Plus, what you said was true, so don't feel too bad about it Temjin. You guys really did nothing wrong.

I have no doubt his departure was exacted after having reached a boiling point, for sure. My apology is directed at my exact comment, as everyone else appeared to be offering their more friendly recommendations. What I stated was something personally directed and judgmental and intolerant to his feelings. That was my mistake.

yey!! Very impressive considering its early problems. Sony survived a lot of self inflicted wounds that brought out a lot complainers early on. Feel much better about their current leadership with Kaz at the helm too. Conradulations Sony!

Great to see - it's definitely my console of choice, and imo the equal-best platform of choice for pushing the gaming industry forward (Steam being the other). Totally with the article and all the comments about the early 'PS3 is doomed' articles - people are so short-term and emotional sometimes, and unfortunately because people won't be forced to eat humble pie, we'll see it all again next gen ;).

I've been saying since 2008 on this site, that my prediction was that Sony will perform another generational Playstation "3PEAT with the PS3 by the time when all is said & done with.

I never doubted it, ever. Something that's provided me with hours of play time since i was a kid isn't something im going to hate. They stayed true to what made the playstation a playstation. Sony for the win.

another thing to consider when buying a console.

when sony releases the ps4, they just wont abandon the ps3,
they'll support the ps3 as long as possible.
unlike M$, who gave up on their xbox when they released the xbox360

no way in hell the ps3 is going to pick up 27M more units with the wii standing still!
especially now that ninty has released the sexy wii mini!
it goes to show though it really is a marathon and not a sprint.
no one when the ps3 launched thought it would of been half this successful!
just goes to show how much can change in 6 years.
and maybe, just maybe, the vita and wiiu wont see the demise and fall everyones speculating them to.

The Xbox 360 failure rate for several years was close to 30%. Catastrophic. Microsoft didn't even bother to try to fix it until four years into the system's life span. Until then, it was $150 to fix (and most of the time, it wasn't fixable, anyway) or just buy a new system. EVERYONE went through at least two or three 360s.

I don't see how that's a gut feeling at all. The bottom line is that millions of the SAME people bought the unit over and over, thereby greatly skewing sales.

I do remember there was some talk about problems with the Xbox in the early days, but where do that number, 30%, come from? Is it just based on impressions (what I call "gut-feeling"), or was there ever anyone looking into it, or a public statement were being made, or some retailer statistics, or someting?

I'm just curious about the basis of these claims, catchin' up on the history. :)

Sony has always looked ahead when it comes to their consoles. I remember when the PS2 came out with a built in DVD player. Everyone laughed. Then the PS3 included Blu-Ray. Everyone laughed again. Would be competitors such as OnLive tried to create a shift by making the console into a dumb terminal and failed. MS continues to build their consoles with cheap off the shelf hardware and little warranty to ensure that the ones who focused on initial sales price continues to buy more 360s when they fail due to all of the other hardware investments made (controllers, rechargeable batteries, games) which brings the overall value down compared to owning a PS3 (not to mention having to pay a fee to play online). Only years later do customers finally understand the value of paying a bit more for the hardware to get more value (Blu-Ray player and free Internet play? OMG). 360 has not even bother to focus any efforts in Japan, where a majority of the consoles sold are Sony. Sony's only major competitor on the low end is Nintendo (who really needs the Wii U to turn things around) and PCs on the high end. The open source console seems interesting-I'm still waiting to see if it gets any traction from game developer or if it will try and cater to indy ones.
