Dead Space 3 Dev On Why Dementia Is Just So Darn Scary
Dead Space 3 should scare the sh** out of you. And why? Well, partly because dementia is enough to make any rational person's skin crawl.
The cooperative style will be in full effect in the latest horrific iteration of the popular series, as a deadly duo will make their way through the game's campaign as best they can.
But if you're playing with a human partner, there's a twist: One of you might suddenly be struck with hallucinations, which the other can't see. And executive producer Steve Papoutsis told CVG that this is going to be a critical part of how the team generates fear and tension. It's also about utilizing a fresh feature.
"Yeah, so that was one of the things that when we were kicking around the idea of co-op we really wanted to innovate and make it feel different and unique to Dead Space. Dementia has been an undercurrent throughout the Dead Space games: it's always been there and has always been a big cornerstone of the franchise, so we were able to utilize dementia in a way that allows Carver and Isaac to see different things from time to time.
That creates an interesting dynamic when you're sitting in your house, I'm sitting in my house, and now I'm saying, 'What are you doing man? Help me out here - what are you doing!?!' And you're saying, 'Are you crazy? I'm seeing something totally different, you're not seeing this?'
You start to have a little argument and it's like you're having real-life dementia when the characters in the game are having dementia and it's different, nobody's done that. We're very excited to show that off."
Papoutsis went on to describe a few examples of when a character's sanity begins to abandon him. There are times when our partner will indescribably disappear and we're left facing some demonic scene, while that partner can easily see us...and see us totally freaking out. You can't say this wouldn't give you the chills...

However, if you want to play it completely on your own, you aren't going to see these moments where Carver goes nuts. There isn't going to be that dynamic between two different players and so there will absolutely seem to be something missing.
No matter how they try to spin it, this is sounding more and more like a co-op oriented affair and while I'd say that's a better option than the multiplayer that was tacked on to DS2, it means that the single players are left shortchanged again.

your constantly seeing flashbacks and having hallucination, but it never really leads to something.
whole point of giving a character dementia is to confuse the players into whats real and whats not, like what alan wake did.
in this its just there for the sake of cut scenes, its really not utilized.
they need to do WAY more with it!
