The Walking Dead Saga Sells 8.5 Million

It's one of the most critically acclaimed games of the year, and the good news for  TellTale Games is that it's also one of the most popular.

According to what studio CEO Dan Connors told The Wall Street Journal, there have been about 8.5 million total episodes sold of The Walking Dead saga.

Interestingly, about 1/4 of the overall sales came from iOS devices and at about $5 per episode, that's a take of over $40 million, not including any promotions (and there have been lots of those). When asked how big the overall project was, TellTale compared it to their past titles (Jurassic Park, Monkey Island, etc.) and said that essentially, The Walking Dead took "years" to build:

"It’s really the culmination of years of building to this that makes The Walking Dead possible. Our tools can do these things and we are just going to keep growing from there. Everything has been an investment in creating great storytelling and great dramatic experiences that work across multiple platforms. Cost-wise, it’s 40% more expensive than other games, but it’s not huge."

The Walking Dead took home Game of the Year honors at the Spike TV Video Game Awards 2012 and has received plenty of acclaim and praise from critics all around the world. If you haven't taken the time, you gotta download that first episode and give it a try.

Seconded. There were quite a few worth GOTY's in 2012, but Walking Dead was just unbelievable. Cannot WAIT for Season 2, and I hope Telltale finds ways to use their style for other series too -- imagine a proper Star Trek game where you're effectively playing through episodes and making decisions as Kirk or Picard!

one thing ill never understand.
did this sell well because of the story and emotional focus?
or did this sell well because its based on a TV show, and it has zombies we all know everyones obsessed with zombies lately!
why is this doing so well when other games who do a MUCH better story, and a MUCH better characters, emotions, ect, ect, struggle to break 1M!
nice to see people DO want something more than pew pew big KABOOM!
but can we be a bit more consistent please?

Because it's accessible and has a fanbase of millions who watch the show.

Very glad to see a Point and Click game thriving. I miss those so much. Hopefully this will revive the genre.

Why? Care to defend your point of view? In what ways are critics and 8.5 million sales getting it wrong?

Heavy Rain. The Walking Dead. there both masterpieces. i don't think it right to compare them. sure they have some similarities but there 2 totally different games. they both achieved what they were aiming for perfectly. enjoy themboth.

peace.
