Skylanders Tops $500 Million, Beats Out Kids Toys And Movies

Family fun for everyone and boy, did it hit big.

Today, Activision Publishing Inc. has revealed that according to data obtained from the NPD Group, the popular Skylanders franchise has passed $500 million in retail sales in the US. That number includes the accessory packs and figures and by the way, the series reached this milestone "faster than any other kids gaming property." Furthermore, Skylanders figures have outsold the top action figure lines in the toy category in the US.

Skylanders Giants was the #1 best-selling kids game of 2012, generating over $195 million in sales, and it even eclipsed box office sales for each of the top holiday feature films for kids. Said Activision Publishing Vice President of Consumer Marketing:

"Just a year ago, the concept of bringing toys to life in a virtual world was an untested play pattern that Activision and Toys For Bob believed in. Now the category has been established in the market and embraced by parents and kids everywhere. We're humbled by the continued support and acclaim from parents, kids and critics alike, but more importantly, it's gratifying to see kids excited about the adventures that await them both in the digital and physical worlds."

Lastly, Skylanders Giants received the National Parenting Center's Seal of Approval, along with the National Parenting Publications Award, and the Parent Tested Seal of Approval. Yeah, it's great for the youngsters and nobody is going to complain about anything offensive, here. It's just a little nuts that Activision has yet another franchise that breaks entertainment records across the board.

Sure is a phenomenon to say the least. My son and I were bit by the Skylanders bug with Giants. It's great for kids and he loves the figures, portal and seeing them appear in the game. We are currently awaiting Ninjini and Eyebrawl to be released later this month.

I recommend it for any parent kid gaming duo. Also, you really only need 1 figure per element to see everything in the game. Otherwise you just get caught up in the collecting aspect which my son and I are a little bit. I can guarantee you we won't be buying all Skylanders figures.

Never underestimate the power of children that love little monsters.

My kids are grown, so I'm not as much into what the youngins are into as I once was, but this shocks me. In video games, I figured that the Lego series would be king. I have seen this game and all its accessories in the stores, but the shelves are always full, so I thought it wasn't that big. I'm glad it is selling like gangbusters. I thought it looked like a cool idea.

I never knew it was so big. Hardly ever hear about it here in the UK. The only reason I know of it is because they hurled Spyro into the cast... which I am not happy with.

My six year old son loves Skylanders. He's got over 30 Skylanders series 1 and Giants figures. He's played through the original game over a dozen times and now completed Giants on easy a few times and moving up to medium.

You can't complain really with value for money as its all he plays all year. The figures are well made and he loves them. All his little friends at school are into it as well. I like the fact that the series 1 figures are playable in the Giants game. Hope they keep that going into the future.

My only complaint is that my six year old keeps beating me in battle mode!

I've heard of Skylanders but didn't know it was this big a deal. I wonder if my 9 year-old nephew would be interested in Skylanders? He plays some Pokemon on his DSi XL; don't know if he wants to try out something new. I'll ask him tomorrow, though he's rather play sports games.
