Dead Space 3 Producer: "I Don't Like To Call It Survival/Horror"

Some say the niche survival/horror genre is dying, others say it's evolving. But either way, developer Visceral Games isn't interested in specifically categorizing their upcoming title as "survival/horror."

During a roundtable discussion in which PSXE participated, Dead Space 3 executive producer Steve Papoutsis was immediately asked if he thought their title would qualify as survival/horror, and what he'd say to people who thought the game had too much action. Steve's response:

"I don't like to categorize Dead Space as survival/horror. I just think of it as a Dead Space game and so you need immersion, tension, a great atmosphere and great sound, and yes, action. If you have all these things, you have a Dead Space game."

I asked him if those who opt to play the game by themselves - without having a buddy for your partner - would detract from the experience. In other words, to put it bluntly, would it even be worth it to play the game all by your lonesome without taking advantage of the much-publicized co-op feature? Steve's reply:

"For players who are familiar with previous games, Dead Space 3 will absolutely deliver on the single-player. If that's a concern for anyone, they should just get out there and try it. In terms of people thinking they're missing out on the story, the only thing you'll really miss is Carver's perspective. If you elect to not play co-op, you just miss Carver's elements. But the game doesn't change because of the co-op; it's not like there's a different ending if you play it by yourself. It really comes down to a person-to-person basis as to how they feel about the co-op."

Tomorrow, we'll tell you how Papoutsis responded to the concept that "fans want change, but they don't want change."

There was slowdown in mine. Weird, hopefully it was the damn 360 and not the demo. What I played of it was ok, it was an open demo. No tight corridor play like the old ones but the game looked good and played well, besides those small batches of slowdown.

Thanks sawao, i aprecciate that. I am extremely curious as to how Dead Space 3 will turn out. Was it scary in anyway or was it like DS2?

Public demo release for PS3 and 360 is next week. Try it out for yourself then.

I already played the 360 demo the night before last from the code EA emailed me.

For those with a 360 who weren't emailed a DS3 code, I believe you can still get one by going to EA's Dead Space 3 Facebook page.

After trying the demo out, gotta say I'm very pleased with DS3.

sawao_yamanaka,

No man,
I only played the SP mode but I had no slowdowns or other problems with it at all.
FYI, I don't know about the co-op mode though.

BTW, 360 users who missed the email or Facebook codes have a 3rd chance to get an early code.
Just follow DS3 on Twitter to receive a code too.
PS3 owners should be able to get their shot at the demo next week.

All I really need to know is if Carver is there in the single player, crowding me and destroying my immersion like Sheva.

So far the scariest thing I've heard about this game is, well, this dodging of the question about survival/horror.

I watched someone play SP and carver didn't follow you around, but you saw him at different cutscenes. I'm 99% sure this is how it is, gamegrumps did a demo playthrough.

Carver isn't part of the gameplay experience if you play by yourself, as I understand it.

Not sure about the full game, but SP mode in the demo, 1 scene where Carver just yelled out one time, from above to give a heads-up in a certain direction. Upon that, they both went off in separate directions.

And there wasn't any SP play with Carver, or as him either.

BTW, I did get the Deja Vu feeling of playing Uncharted 3 again in 1 very quick but frantic scene, yet I felt it worked well for the situation, so all was good.

So even the producer admits what I've said about the series all along. It isn't survival horror. Glad that's out in the open.

So, first he says it's not really "survival horror" anymore. (survival-action?) And the focus on this co-op mechanism while the game is being promoted.
Then the 360 crowd (i.e We love shooting stuff) get a code first. Anyone smell anything too? (or am I being too pessimistic?)

I'm going to be cautious with this game. I'll definitely wait for the PS3 demo and Ben's review.

SEE, even the developer himself says its not survival horror!
so can we PLEASE STOP calling DS survival horror!?
its NOT!
not even horror, but survival horror is a even bigger stretch.
when you can kill enemies in 2 shots, and find ammo, health packs, weapon upgrades, all sorts of equipment every 2 steps, that is NOT a "survival" game!

Play Dead Space 2 in zeolot mode and even if you have a 100 plasma energy you will still going to die a lot, for me it's more difficult to survive in Dead Space 2, remember those stalkers and when you're near towards the end you will find yourself in a confined space and necromorphs are everywhere and you will be brutalized. Dead Space 2 is more difficult than the first, that if you played it before playing Dead Space 1 for the very first time, you will feel like Dead Space 1 is a walk in the park compared to the sequel.

Total respect for anyone that plays the Dead Space games on Zealot! I haven't done this yet. Maybe some day. When I am playing I will think about players going through this on Zealot and just marvel at what they going through.

Crusader,

You must play Dead Space 3 for the first time in it's available hardest difficulty, I certainly will. Ah! Those feeling of hopelessness and panic Hehe.

Your on, I will definitely play DS3 at it's highest difficulty and let you know what I think. I think it allows Hard and then when you beat Hard, Zealot difficulty becomes available. I beat DS1 and DS2 on Normal difficulty so this will be an eye opener. :)

Playing zealot is so much fun. Only 3 saves and two hits to death. Can't wait for this.

Sawao,

The 3 saves is the Hard Core mode, still haven't touch that. But I've finished Impossible Mode in the first game.

Crusader,

In DS2, zeolot is already available and you will unlock Hard Core mode when you beat the game in any difficulty. And in Hard Core mode you are only allowed to save for three times, I still haven't touch that mode.

homura,

HA!
I'm not even about to try that Zealot mode just because that's got to be the same exact spot that I've been stuck in with all the different necros, along with that giant re-animating one that also walked through walls to chase into all the others in that tiny corridor & all the while those clusters spider-looking ones are leaping on your back to drain your life away. Plus, while I'm rapidly depleting the little ammo & other charges/items I still have.

But I'll keep going back to re-tackle it again & again over time just like I did on the Boss Battle with Barret in De:Human Revolution that I finally won recently, and now keep trying to also do with the 2nd boss battle too.

Biker and Sawao,

I've died a lot and felt so hopeless in those sections even though I have a lot of ammo that I just run as hell to the next objective and hope that I have enough stasis pack and health packs. I feel like I'm traumatized that I'm a little scared to try the Hardcore mode. Hehe.

Yes, the COOP is a little scary since going it alone in Dead Space is the dread and tension needed for a Dead Space 1 experience. This isn't Nhilistic, it's Visceral Games and they haven't lead me astray yet. I thought Dead Space 2 was amazing. I am expecting a truly fantastic story, atmosphere, control, graphic and sound powerhouse. Seriously, it's Dead Space nuff said. The story and universe is enough to warrant a D1P. If done right this would be an epic movie.

I cannot wait to see where they go with the story and Isaac's psyche. Isaac's the man! All the crap he has to deal with and how they portray his feelings, mental status and look is truly awesome. More Dead Space is what I want. I just hope it's not over after I beat 3. Dead Space 4 would be very welcome if they are able to keep pumping out a fantastic story. I already have this preordered on the PSN. Cannot wait!
