New GTAV Details Include Character Switching And Hijacking

The more information we can find for Grand Theft Auto V, the happier we all are.

Dutch site GameKings got a chance to speak with Rockstar boss Dan Houser and it didn't take long for hardcore franchise followers to translate those details into English (as summarized at Gameranx).

First up, Houser mentions the part of a gameplay demo where we see Michael sitting by the pool and confirms that that isn't a cut-scene. Furthermore, the mission shown off to the press was also real gameplay and not a scripted sequence, so that's kinda impressive right off the bat. The only downside is that the public hasn't seen any of this footage, so they'll have no idea what we're talking about...bummer, that.

But anyway, we learn that each character "approaches a mission through different means," so we'll get to see that mission via a variety of perspectives. Here's more about how we'll be switching back and forth between the main characters:

"The game's switching mechanism gives players an indicator for each and every protagonist on the zoomed out map, which you can switch between. It switches between the game's three protagonists, Michael, Franklin and Trevor. The system is unscripted, so you'll be able to switch to these characters throughout the game. This differs from Heavy Rain's linear narrative, which forces players into the roles of the different protagonists throughout the story."

And of course, heists and hijacking will return (wouldn't be GTA if they didn't), and there will be armored trucks containing cash that we can jack for extra funds. By all rights, the game should absolutely rule...we just need an official, solidified launch date. Hurry up, Rockstar!

"Heavy Rain's linear narrative"?

Okay.

lol - well spotted ;). It may be a mistranslation, as while Heavy Rain's structure was definitely more fixed than a GTA, calling it linear is a semantic choke as well.

Either way, GTA's sounding like an excellent addition to the series :).

It definitely looks awesome. Hopefully I'll enjoy it a million times more than GTA IV. I could not get into that game at all.

Im not huge on the switching idea. But at least it gives me a reason to playthrough a second and third time.

Why the thumb? It would be real interesting to hear what was shown, wouldn't it?

Ignore thumbs up and thumbs down votes. They really don't mean anything.

And no, I haven't seen the trailers.

Really? How do you know Alejandro Ale Ale Alejandro? Sorry I couldn't resist. Sadly, I like Lady Gaga's music
If this is true, i hope the box art or trailer comes with a solid release date.
I love the idea of hijacking and robberies.

GTA IV was the game that persuaded me to pony up cash for a PS3. Fitting one of the last huge games for the system (I think, anyway) will be the sequel.

Is it just me or the blonde girl in the pic looks just like a younger Rebecca Romijn?

I'm hearing rumors that a 3rd trailer may make its debut during the superbowl. Advertising wise this makes sense if GTA 5 is indeed going tobe released this spring.

imo, the switching thing could be cool as long as we have a
choice and not forced.
still, its a d1p, whenever that might be :)

interesting to see how the missions are laid out, whether every mission will have a different perspective for each character or only some of them.
i hope its a bit of both, that way it adds more to the story, but at the same time playing as another character wont be really boring.
cough DMC4, i was so relieved to be playing as dante finally but that relief quickly disappeared when i realized where i was.
wait, this looks so familiar..........
