Gearbox: Colonial Marines To Capture The Essence Of The Films

If you're thinking about passing on the upcoming Aliens game, you might want to think twice.

Although the footage we've seen hasn't exactly screamed "Uncharted quality" in terms of graphics, we're most interested in the gameplay and atmosphere, which will clearly be the driving forces behind Aliens: Colonial Marines.

The game will launch on February 12 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC and Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford told VentureBeat that they really wanted to capture the "gnarly bad-assery" of the colonial marines. In short, they wish to "invoke the legacy" of the films in question:

"To the extent that weíre capturing what was in the movies, itís really fantasy fulfillment. Every time we saw the colonial marines and thought about how awesome they are, how badass they are, how cool their equipment is, and how gnarly that situation was ó and even the specific environments like the Sulaco, and Hadleyís Hope, and the derelict ship from Alien ó those were fantasies we wanted to fulfill. Sometimes itís the script and narrative. Sometimes itís experiential."

The best part is that in order to fulfill these claims, Aliens: Colonial Marines will have to feature some diverse elements; in this case, both action and horror elements. Heck, there's even a little stealth involved. And that would make sense, considering what the viewer felt when watching the movies. Pitchford explained that sensation as they recreated it in the game:

"The first time I faced off against one of the new species thatís introduced, I felt scared. Itís less about brute force and rushing at you and dying. Itís more a stealthy hunter. And when you first encounter this thing, youíre vulnerable. I did not know where it was, and I could hear my motion tracker pinging. And that sound the motion tracker makes? Itís like, ĎOh shit!í I feel Iím one of the guys in the movie."

This is one game that could surprise a lot of people. Me, I'm really hoping for a pretty fantastic Aliens game; we kinda deserve one at this point.

My buddy who is a huge Alien fan always has something interesting to say about this game. He was saying they actually got a hold of the blue prints to recreate the ship the way it was built in the movie. I dont know.

Regardless it actually looks like a really good game and if it goes over well, I think Gearbox could be mentioned with some of the best FPS' creators out there.hey already have that, they get a lot of respect, but this cld vault them to an even higher level.

Yes they have used the actual bule prints from the sets and are apparently even accurate in scale. My concern there is these sets were made to look good on film. Will they make for good maps and levels in an actual videogame?

I hope it does turn out well for Aliens fans. The badassery of the Colonial Marines was kind of part of my childhood (yes I was exposed to violent media and I'm fine) so it seemed really cool but it's actually kind of corny compared to what went on in the first Alien. So I hope they strike a balance for people, 80's entertainment doesn't go over too well anymore.

I love the Alien movies (except 3, which was just ridiculous). I hope this game really can make me feel the same way I do when I watch Alien and Aliens. I love the old AvP game for PC (from 1999, maybe?) as it really had the atmosphere down pat. This one looks quite promising!

exactly why im worried about this!
they show all the details on how they created the game, and its really nice to see the anal retentiveness to the movie history.
what makes me really worried though, is the gameplay.
it just seems that they have spent so much time making sure everything is 100% accurate to the movie, they have lost focus on what matters.
you ARE making a GAME, not a MOVIE!

i REALLY hope this flies off the shelves, i really do!
1 it will REALLY help the horror genre, hopefully it will encourage allot more people to take a shot at it.
prove if its done well, you CAN make a sh*t tone of money with it!
2 prove that old franchises dont need to be changed, modernized for the 21st century, to be successful!
oh well, just 2 more weeks and after, what, 6+ years!?
will FINALLY have our answer!

Couldn't agree more. It's unbelievable just how pervasive an influence Aliens has had on sci-fi video games, and science fiction in general really. We are long overdue for a game that does justice to the source material. I'm hopeful this one does the trick.
