God Of War: Ascension vs. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

It's an interesting comparison, don't you think? Which will be the better action game in the first quarter of 2013?

Platinum's Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance hits in February while God of War: Ascension drops in March, and action aficionados everywhere are likely intrigued by both. But in your estimation, which will end up being the superior hackin' experience?

Perhaps it's safe to assume the following: Ascension will have better overall polish and production values, as that's precisely what the franchise is known for. On the flip side, Revengeance might appeal more to the hardcore fighting fanatics, as it might be more complex and feature a stiffer learning curve. After all, Platinum was responsible for one of this generation's deepest, most intricate and most demanding combat mechanics, which was found in Bayonetta.

But this all depends on your definition of "best action game," right? For some, it's more about accessibility and those super high production values, while others place all their eggs in the complexity basket; i.e., "I want to spend my life learning these combos and only then will I get the requisite satisfaction." Then again, what about story? It usually isn't the biggest factor in such a genre but it can certainly have a positive or negative impact on the overall quality of a game. Me, I'd give the edge to Ascension just because I've never been all that impressed with any of Platinum's narratives. But Ascension might feel a tad empty, too.

So what do you say?

God of War is in a league of it's own I wish Kojima still held the reigns for the Rising project but maybe it was for the best. I'd say Rising would have a similar feel to those Ninja Gaiden games
I feel like Ascencion will take the title of "best action game" between this duel of dual action adventures

Btw I've never played Bayonetta. I've heard it was over the top which is usually my kind of thing But i think i was detered by the claims that we ps3 owners got a gimped version compared to the 360's
Was it really that bad?

Never played it myself but it is a fact that the PS3 version was a poor port of the 360 game. Makes me wonder if the upcoming PSN version of it would be enhanced to address those issues. I doubt it though.

It wasn't the worst thing in the world, the biggest problem was really a framerate issue that pervaded certain parts where tons of stuff was going on.

Indeed. At least Platinum learned a valuable lesson after that and made the PS3 the lead platform for their games. I heard that Vanquish was silky smooth on both the PS3 and 360.

There's should be a demo on PSN for you try of Bayonetta. It looks very blurry, both pixel and texture-wise, compared to 360 and the frame rate is probably the most erratic I've seen in any console game I've played in memory. It was a far cry in quality compared to the 360 release.

@Clock

Temjin's correct. It may not be worse port out there but it's the worst one I have ever seen. Fallout 3 is pretty bad in certain areas(especially the DLC) but at least you can avoid those ares if you want. You can't do that in Bayonetta. I'm sorry to say the 360 version is light years ahead of the PS3 version. I doubt it can be patched out. Sega just did a straight 360 to PS3 port which rarely turns out well.

If you really want to play it just rent it. Don't support lazy devolpers. Sega did a lot of damage to the PS3's reputation with that nasty port. :(

People KEEP forgetting that there is a lot more colaboration between Platinum and KojiPro than they realise.

Kojipro wouldn't let any MG game release and not be top value, no matter who was looking after it.

Absolutely buying God of War: Ascension. As much as I like the MGS series, I've never been interested with MGR:R. And with my current backlog, I have to be really picky with my games. So yeah, GOW:A it is for me.

Hmm.. I have played both the God of War beta and MGS demo. I like the GOW beta. One thing that sucks about it is you can't invite friends to the game. I know you will be able to in the final version but is annoying. My good friend ZettaiSeigi wanted to play a match together but couldn't. :( We both like the GOW multiplayer.

I am going to buy GOW too Zettai. I had a ton of fun playing Mass Effect 3's multiplayer with you. I look forward to putting countless hours into the GOW multiplayer with you. :)

Okay, back to MGS. One thing that impressed me was how buttery smooth the gameplay is. The game looks great and is running 60 FPS. The graphics look crisp and detailed. It looks like Platinum Games knows what they are doing on the PS3.

Btw. I absolutely loved Vanquish. It's a very underated game. It's true that it's a short gane but it's still great. I would love to see a sequel to Vanquish. They should add multiplayer to it next time.

From what im hearing of the demo (yea I know its just a demo) MGS rising is a very flat experience from the combat to the gameplay.

Personally I would never bet against GoW anyways. Sony Santa Monica just does to great a job with these games.

Yeah, as if I am going to go against Kratos! Holy Sh!t I am almost done with GoWII right now and don't need him coming after me!! That's right Kratos you are a god and I think you are the best video game character of all time. Yessir! :)

Seriously, for someone coming late to the party. I can think about nothing more than playing GoWII right now. Actually playing Ni No Kuni and GoWII right now. Both games are so different it allows me to pull it off and thoroughly enjoy both. Ascension looks fantastic! Kratos is so brutal, what a great character!

I'm sure GOW:A gonna be a better game but I don't care much about it, the beta was fun for while and got boring fast well I'm not much into MP and that is fine because the past GOW games didn't have it, they should of learned from Uncharted they incorporated MP but they didn't forgot to hype the campaign!

However, we are only two weeks away from Crysis 3! Woohoo - now THAT is one title I am super psyched for!

this might seem hasty, but I tried the Crysis 3 beta 'airplane' level, really just to see it's graphics, and it didn't impress me, not even close actually. The usual suspects make a return: growing in shadows and geometry. The blurry feel of Crysis 2 is back and the foliage looked a bit chunky by my tastes.
maybe the single player stuff will look better.

I can't speak for the console version of the beta, but the PC version of it I played didn't have those issues, on ultra settings at least. Well the foliage wasn't the greatest but I don't really care how the leaves look as you're usually running too fast to see them in detail anyway. Personally I just checked it out for tech as well, as I never play Crysis multiplayer. It's all about the single player for me with that franchise. It's not a real big improvement over Crysis 2 so far, but that was the only map I played. I'm sure the rest will look a lot better once it's out.

Temjin,
I loved the blurry feel of Crysis 2 - I think it looks great, adds depth to the picture. I really don't get why that received so much criticism, and I for one am glad they kept it.

In Crysis 2 the graphics in the single player were notably better than mp (at least the PS3 version) - something that makes sense too.

But I'm real torn this time, if I will get Crysis 3 for PC or PS3. I got buddies on both platforms that are saying they'll get the game, so it ends up being a question of who I most want to play with. Hate it when that happens!

... And then there's BioShock and GTA coming up, and between these three titles I got a life to cater to. So no GoW or MGR for me.

honestly, I play god of war mostly for the story and the set pieces. They really draw me into the game. The action part of it works fine and is certainly fun enough (especially with all the gory deaths that I am ashamed and proud to say are entertaining), but it was never really all that deep.

Platinum games may have been very light on story in the past (I didn't even bother listening to Vanquish) but Bayonetta was actually just plain fun regardless of the weird (but still fun) story. I'm interested to see what platinum will do with revengence. With God of war, I already pretty much know exactly what to expect, especially after playing the beta. But that isn't at all a bad thing

I played the demo for MGR:R, it ran pretty good in my opinion I had no issues with it. The Blade mode takes a bit to get used to though, it was very weird trying to be accurate with it without slicing the cardboard hostages with the enemy behind them. I thought the demo was actually pretty fun.

But which is better? Not sure, I don't think I could choose either one of them over the other one. I like my Greek Mythology and futuristic technology, and science fiction and what have you.

That is a very tough call imo, so I will stand neutral on this.

yea they may be in the same genre, and have the same RPG dungeon crawler feel, but besides that there totally different!
GOW and rising even more so, ones a hack and slash ripper set on big set pieces, and massive boss battles!
the other is much more about stealth, precision, and super fast paced combat!
they may be in the same genre, but thats where the similarities end.

Not to be a fanboy but nothing can be beat GoW. I don't even like mashers, but from my time with GoW3 all i can say is that GoW is the creation of epic. I mean ZERO lag with that giant thing moving in the background while your fighting monsters. Textures were so clean and even the gameplay was pretty awesome. Then the brutal killing of the bosses was pretty badarse too.

The MG rising demo makes me feel like its holding my hand and saying "Its ok! Here, push this button ok good! Now do this!" I don't like games treating me like im a 5 year old haha Plus, what the hell happened to him spending time with his family? It kind of upsets me. Those things really only put a damper on your experience if you're actually really looking for the issues. It's still one of my all time favorite Hack and Slash games this gen. Bayo is just ridiculously fun!!! I think GOW will take the cake on this one. I say this even though Platinum is one of my favorite developers. I honestly think it'll go like this. GOW takes the cake, DmC comes in second and MGR: Revengeance comes in third. I love me some new DmC. It's really a shame that NT gets no love because it really is a fantastic game. I played the demo for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and I didn't care for it.

I didn't like that the square button is used as both the primary attack button, AND the parry button (while moving the left analog stick forward at the same time).

I could never get the parry to work consistently even when getting the timing just right, so I had no choice but to constantly take damage from enemies, and for me it just took away a lot of the fun of controlling a supposedly badass, nigh invincible cyborg killing machine.

I also didn't care for the miniboss at the end with the lame unblockable attack sequences.

So I don't sound completely neagtive about the demo, I though the Blade Mode was a really cool and well done feature. Chopping up a watermelon (or anything else not nailed down) into 500+ teeny tiny pieces was sweet.
