Analyst: GTAV Cost $137 Million But Will Sell 18 Million

Okay, that's pricey.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, Sterne Agee industry analyst Arvind Bhatia anticipates the cost of making Grand Theft Auto V to be around $137 million. But he anticipates the game will sell 18 million, which would generate $230 million in operating profit.

Bhatia explained his "hypothetical profitability model" for GTAV, which was based on that $137.5 million budget and a team of 250 people working on the project for five years. But even with adding projected marketing costs between $69 million and $109.3 million, Bhatia still sees "huge returns" for publisher Take-Two Interactive. Even if the game "only" managed to sell 15 million copies, that would still result in an operating profit of $193.6 million for the fiscal year. If it sold 25 million copies, it would result in a whopping $390.8 million profit.

For the time being, Bhatia thinks the hotly anticipated blockbuster will shift 18 million units in Take-Two's fiscal year, which would put it second only to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in terms of sales this generation. ...well, come on. Does anyone really think GTAV won't rake in a ton of cash?

Delaying a video game by 4 months does not change the tradegy and or outlook of all of us americans on the many mass shootings that have / will continue to occur,it seems as if their is one everytime i tune in to cnn, and i hope and prey that more will not occur , but they will and by the time GTA V releases i bet video games will be blamed even more at that time and that it will be more risky with all the violence later, i believe rockstar delayed the title because they need to polish/market the game greatly before its release, and given the situation , they would of had at most 3months to market the game with that spring date in mind, and everyone knows rockstar does not roll that way, hell they still are trying to squeeze every cent out of max payne 3 and all its dlc.

Big O has no such designs, and you shouldn't make fun of people who need assistance because of Wall Street's fiscal malfeasance.

That is some serious cash , but Grand Theft Auto is a serious franchise that makes serious money, i just am happy that it is finally releasing and i just want to ask you ben in the most respectful way possible to be careful sometimes when you find out GTA V info or any info on any game for that matter , last time you wrote an article and in the title you put "Play as Three characters in GTA V " or something along those lines and you did not include a spoiler alert, i ask that you do not put big spoilers in titles , thank you.

If it's as great as gamers' expectations, I'm sure GTA V will easily sell 18 million +
The little "snippets" they are showing are looking fantastic so far

I've got a hunch that R* isn't delaying GTA5 for extra polishing at all, but doing it due to fact they know the lame-steam media & nanny-state politicians will jump all over the game while all this gun controversy is going on.

I think R* probably thinks the heat will hopefully die down a bit by the time of their new later launch date.

That's what I've been trying to tell Alejandro562. But he is one stubborn jellyfish. After a concrete spring 2013 release date and 5 year development cycle, you think that a delay happened because the game needs "polish"? I don't think so. They even gave an exact new release date. I mean, if the game needs polish, you wouldn't know how much polish, wouldn't a release date come out after you knew the game is ready?

I think there's an ace up R*s sleeve, I think they will release it on PS3 and 360, make a buttload of cash and then release an enhanced edition for PS4 and 720 when those come out and make an extra buttload of cash.

sure, if they're supposedly doing a PC port the PS4 version would be essentially done ;)

That would be pretty smart of them to try and cash in on both versions (this and next gen).

i cant see the costs being THAT high!
the costs for GTAIV were estimated at 80M if i remember right, and you have to remember that was including building the RAGE engine which they have used throughout the whole generation!
IV was also their first MP title so they had to invest in new employees with network experience, and also network code and server costs.
V does not have half the costs IV did!
yea it has a larger development team working on it, but thats really the only thing costing more tha 4 so i think that number is grossly exaggerated!
unless it is being created for next gen systems as well, than your basically creating 2 games, and again they would have to do work on the RAGE engine for enhancements to next gen tech so in that case it may not be so ludicrous.

Wow, just read that it's release date will be September 17!

Anyways, I don't think R* needs to spend so much money to advertise this game, this is a franchise that should be able to sell itself without too much help.
