CT Proposes 10% Excise Tax For All Games Rated "M"

Man, my state is really pissing me off lately.

After the Newtown school shooting, politicians everywhere have pointed their rigid, ignorant fingers at video games. Some want the ESRB ratings to become legally binding, others have made outlandish statements like "games are a bigger problem than guns," and still others want to tax violent games.

Recently, Connecticut senator Chris Murphy proposed that if the gunman hadn't played a video game that empowered him, the tragedy might never have happened. ...brilliant guy, right there. But wait, Connecticut isn't done embarrassing itself; now it's the turn of Debralee Hovey (R-112th District), who has proposed a 10% excise tax on all games sold in the state that are rated M for Mature. This would make a game go from $60 to $70, by the way. Funds from this endeavor would be handed to the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, so educational materials can be created for families.

That education, by the way, would highlight the "warning signs" of video game addiction and antisocial behavior.

I have no further comment.

There are many things in society that should be studied as possible factors in this horrific tragedy, but video games have already been studied and they are not the problem.

No wonder the US congress has such a low approval rating when they waste time on this nonsense.

Actually, I'm kind of surprised that a luxury tax on M rated games hasn't been suggested before. M rated games are clearly intended for an adult audience, and in a sense it makes sense to tax them as a luxury since that is one definition of the video gaming hobby.

Personally, I think it's a brain-dead stupid idea that only appeals to politicians trying to grandstand their way into a better career at the cost of the lives lost in tragic shootings and scapegoating the very convenient, and difficult to defend video game industry. Politicians turn my stomach sometimes...

Exactly, why are rated R, TV-MA, and adult movies not taxed 10% more?

They can do whatever they want with video games, even if, I repeat, EVEN IF, any crap they proposed somehow get the green light, violence will still be around.

And by the way Highlander, can I assume that your avatar is your WKC avatar?

10% sounds awfully high. That could translate into a lot of money with not enough crazy people to spend it on.

10% would actually raise it from $60 to $66, not $70. I don't think the tax is high enough... I think it should be 100% tax on violent games, and the revenues be sent to gun shops to subsidize the cost of weapons and ammo to make it more affordable for people to protect themselves from wack-jobs. Go ahead, vote me down... It's REALLY gonna hurt my feelings.

I'm with you!

Also, shove a 1000% tax right up the a$$es of any & all of those posers keep trying trying to void or change any part of our Constitution or any of it's Amendments, in order to try defeating us with their New World Order socialism Bull$hit!

Or also to try to null & void our Bill Of Rights, & any of our Freedoms that our Forefathers granted us with their infinite wisdom.

Perhaps the best solution is not to hand a gun to 300 million people in order to protect against 300 "wack-jobs."

So how many people deserve to protect themselves from whack-jobs Ben? Just the Elite? Just the thugs we call cops? Or just the people YOU pick to protect themselves? Do you somehow think giving guns to people is going to CREATE more whack-jobs? History proves to us that the best solution is to hand guns out to every American, and let them carry it on themselves without government intervention.

I don't think you have to worry about us losing our guns PSN French, but you may have to count on us having to use them. The predictions and warnings that detail a future one world government only come from one book and America appears to be missing from it. Nobody seems to be able to figure out why a country as powerful as the US is absent from prophecy. It's possible that we get destroyed.

If the elite is able to remove the weapons from Swiss and American citizens, a one world government would be formed immediately afterward. We can't stop the one world government from forming with the weapons available to us, but at least we can fight back and refuse to live under it.

People fail to realize that the second amendment has nothing to do with hunting or sport. It is 100% about protecting ourselves from tyranny that comes from a corrupted government.

The people who are willing to fight seem to be aware of what's taking place.

I will be dead before my guns are taken from me, yet I will gladly save my own life over a stupid video game. @TES73, Also, prophecy talks about "powerful governments", and many attribute those powers to babylon, when likely America is the government that has given freedom to countless and is now arrogant as the babylonians. I think prophesies of "novus ordo seclorum" (New World Order), are simply using our system to rape the minds of "good" people. Search the words of the Rothschilds RIGHT before the war of 1812, and tell me our history books are correct. All freedoms will be lost when citizens disregard our 2nd amendment rights, the Rothschilds have already told us this... yet people DONT read REAL history. I'm done with idiocy, because I will likely die for their freedom while they cheer my death. It wont sway me, I will still fight for the idiots. They deserve freedom too!

Tes, your first clue is who is agreeing with you. Next will be blank line. I respect you at least for many of your insights on other topics. Psn French here believes polio vaccinations have worsened polio despite the fact the vaccinations have made it nearly extinct. You should always be concerned when habitual conspiracy theorists agree with you. Especially people who think everything is a conspiracy.
I'm just trying to help, now. If my factual foundations on this topic label me an idiot in some circles, then I wear that label proudly, French. At least idiots have some resemblance of a brain at all. In that sense, I'm still ahead. :)

When ever politics gets involved with things like this, nothing ever gets solved. Being able to spot mental illness and him having access to firearms is the main issue here.
Video games do not cause one to have bipolar disorder!
I also do not care for large ammo clips. I hunt and enjoy guns myself but find these thirty to fifty round clips sports shops sell completely unnecessary and a problem. There not needed for hunting and fire to many rounds for your gun to handle without getting to hot and jamming. Do we really need them?

This guy was an adult and I'm tired of hearing politicians talk like he was a child that video games corrupted. His mom was an irresponsible gun owner because he obviously had some form of mental illness and his mother should not have had guns in the house. Mental illness and guns is all that is needed for a formula for disaster.

I'm sorry, but playing freaking Dynasty Warriors is not going to make someone go on a murdering spree! It might make some commit suicide from boredom, but that's about it. By the way, I personally love Dynasty Warriors!

Tell that to the South Koreans who would have lost their lives, homes and businesses if it wasnt for their 30 round clips!! The ease of killing from a weapon is involved with the fact that you may have to kill a tyrant. The only problem is that George Washington stands as the ONLY revolutionary to NOT become a tyrant himself. You live in the matrix and cant even see it... all the tyrants that want your weapons carry weapons themselves AND have body guards!!

If you have not discovered this yet, I wish to share with the world, and my government... I will die a revolutionary, and I am the only person I have met that will not desire power over another. I wish to give each individual the power to live their own lives. This is the way the real world works... and may the bankers fail in their take-over.
