Dead Space 3 Infinite Resources Glitch Isn't Really A Glitch

That ain't no glitch. It's a little gift for the savvy.

GameFront initially discovered what appeared to be a glitch in Dead Space 3, as you can see in the video embedded below. It lets you totally bypass the option to purchase resources with real money: Just farm up one random resource that infinitely respawns.

Interestingly enough, when GameFront approached developer Visceral Games with their discovery, the designers responded as follows; you might be surprised at the reply:

"The resource-earning mechanic in Dead Space 3 is not a glitch. We have no plans to issue a patch to change this aspect of the game. We encourage players to explore the game and discover the areas where resources respawn for free. We’ve deliberately designed Dead Space 3 to allow players to harvest resources by playing through the game. For those that wish to accumulate upgrades instantly, we have enabled an optional system for them to buy the resources at a minimal cost ($1-$3)."

That's nice of them, isn't it? This whole microtransaction idea still chafes a little in my mind but at least we don't have to spend real money to get super powerful. ...we just have to spend real time, that's all.

I must admit that is a very clever way of getting around your failures in an epic failure of a game.

Back to Dante now guys, off you go...

Epic Failure? Hmmm, that's a little harsh. Are you basing this Epic Failure off the demo?

Nope, off the reviews and departure from the original genre.

Wasn't aware the game was pulling in the same kind of review scores as Aliens....

Also looking forward to see how EA 'screws up' Dante's Inferno 2, its bound to happen

Whats funny is i watch these guys all the time. I chatted with Mitch and he said at first EA was threatening them about the video. Then all of a sudden they said "Oh its supposed to be in the game." It would bring all kinds of bad light towards them so of course they will deny it. I mean the gun crafting in it feels so broken because they want you to buy their microtransactions.

Wow, so much press over micro-transactions that are not even needed to complete the game. I think it's cool that they give you a choice. I choose to not use them. It's as easy as that.

Its not a matter of "needing" microtransactions or not to finish the game.

It is the unethical choice of putting them in there. Marketing research shows a trend that when you have micros in a game people are more likely to use them even if they aren't required.

1-3$ looks like nothing, and people before they know it end up spending 50 bucks just trying to finish that gun. This is the same tactic they use in games like Farmville, and other Social website games.

I'm very glad to hear that you don't have to touch these to play the game. But I wont support a game that is 60 almost 70 bucks that then puts this stuff in here, along with all the other day one DLC they had.

It is the start of a scary trend that we already saw in F2P PC games about 5 or 6 years ago. A trend where they claim it isn't Pay to Win but in order to enjoy the game or even be competitive you would have to grind an insane amount or get lucky.

I have played enough F2P games, MMOs and Shooters to see the flaw in this system. It does get people playing their games but usually the gameplay is built around this model so balance issues and pay advantages pop up once the community develops the best load outs and guns etc.

Now this isn't an issue in DS3 because its not a competitive game. However supporting this game is supporting the notion that it is okay for them to tease and taunt people with easily purchasable things to make their game "better"

Now options are fine, but the concern is when the "optional" micros become so enticing because the game is designed around pushing you in the direction of purchasing them. Which is something that a lot of PC games tried, and some are still doing and succeeding with and I haven't the foggiest why people pay 50 bucks a month for a F2P game but people do :
So long as these stay optional I don't really care(although I wont support them). When I see them becoming like some of the F2P games of the old, I'll start a petition or something to stop it because by that point the micros wont be an option they will be mandatory.
